1. HUGH1 LEE I was born 1609 in Tilston, England, and died April 01, 1662 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He married HANNAH HUETT in Maryland? She was born 1616 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and died 1667 in Virginia.
Notes for HUGH LEE I:
Hugh was apparently granted land four times in Northumberland County. First, he was granted 100 acres on December 21, 1650 for importing himself and Rose Stockwell from Maryland (granted 50 acres per person under the headright program). Then, in 1654, he patented another 288 acres for importing another six persons; but he deserted this land and lost it. He finally settled in Northumberland County prior to May 13, 1657 for importing 22 persons, including the widow Hannah Hewitt whom he married. Hugh patented 400 acres in 1660 before his death before September 8, 1662 [book 2, 161].
Hugh's and Hannah's birthdays are deduced from affidavits they signed in Northumberland County on May 20, 1653 when they swore they were aged 44 and 37.
Hugh's name is mentioned frequently in the Northumberland Court records. On April 13, 1652 he signed an oath to the Commonwealth of England (Cromwell) [Book 1, 72-3]. On January 20, 1652 his petition for a free school to be set up was granted. He served as a County Commissioner beginning August 20, 1655 and as a Justice beginning May 26, 1656 [Book 14, 84]. He acted as agent for many men, including the collection of debts.

The data on this chart was obtained from the records of Prince George County, Charles City Co, and Henrico Co, Va. as well as the Va. Land Patents, Va. Tax Lists for Prince George Co., The Bristol Parish Vestry Book and Register, and data obtained in the late 19th Century by Miss Catherine Lee (born 1857) from her aunt, Susan B. Lee Gooch and her grandmother Sarah Clements Lee. Other data from the Bible of Lodowick Lee and Alfred Stith Lee. It has not been possible to relate this branch of the Lee Family to Hugh Lee (1609-1661) of Northumberland County, Va. and St. Mary's Co., Md. A Hugh Lee was also in Isle of Wight co. in the 1640's, and a Hugh Lee was British Consul in Lisbon in 1611. The name of Hugh Lee occurs frequently among the Lees of Shropshire, especially the Parish of Hughley, whose records were destroyed in the 1650's. Relationship of this Lee family to those of York County and the Stratford Lees is unknown.

Sandy, thank you so much for the informative email. Joe Lee of Houston, Tx. has done extensive research on this family, and has made several trips to England. He has found the birth record of Hugh I in Tilston, England in 1609. This date is verified in court records in Virginia. This is near Conaway on the north coast of Wales. This name was shortened from Aberconaway--the name Hugh II gave to his home in Prince George county. This makes a fairly good link between Hugh I and Hugh II.

He married ANN TATUM Abt. 1690, daughter of SAMUEL TATUM and MARY MOORE. She was born Abt. 1676 in Prince George County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1714 in Prince George County, Virginia.
According to Benjamin B. Weisiger, Hugh Lee is first noted in the Charles City County records in 1692 as "Hugh Lee, Jr." He lived in Bristol Parish Swamp and was the surveyor of highways there in 1715. In that year, he and his brother in law petitioned the court re estate of his father in law, Samuel Tatum.

This Indenture made the tenth Day of August in the fourteenth year of
the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Ann by the Grace of God of Great
Britain France and Ireland Queen Defender of the faith and in the year
of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and fourteen Between Hugh
Lee Senr. and Ann his wife of the County of Prince George in Bristol
Parrish of the one parte and their son Samuel Lee of the same County
and Parrish, of the other parte WITNESSETH that the said Hugh Lee and
Ann his wife for and in consideration of five pounds curr't. money of
Virginia to them in hand paid at and before the Ensealing and Delivery
of these presents by the said Samuel Lee the receipt whereof they do
hereby acknowledge and thereof by these presents doth acquit and
Discharge the said Samuel Lee, his heirs, Executors and Administrators,
have granted released and confirmed and by these presents doth for them
selves and their heirs fully clearly and absolutely grant release and

Samuel Lee and is now in his full possession and sov'in. by force and
virtue of a Bargaine and sale thereof to him made by the said Hugh Lee
and Ann his wife for the terme of three years to commence from the
ninth Day of this Instant by Indenture Bearing Date the day before the
Date of these presents by force and virtue of the Statute for
transferring into possession. To have and to hold the said Land
tenements and premisses with the appurtenances hereby granted and
released unto the said Samuel Lee his heirs and assigns for ever so
that neither the said Hugh Lee and Ann his wife nor their heirs nor any
person under them shall have a claime or Demand and rights title or
Interest of in or to the premisses or any part thereof, but that the
same shall and may be quietly and peaceably possest and enjoyed by the

Notes for SAMUEL LEE:
Samuel and Frances lived in Bristol Parish, Prince George County. His land was located on both sides of the Great Branch of Warwick Swamp. Several grants of land in that area: 172 acres on north side of Swamp in 1717; 153 acres on June 22, 1722; and 354 additional acres on September 28, 1732. In 1714 Samuel received as a gift from his parent, Hugh and Ann, 100 acres in Prince George County where he was living. In 1737 he was granted 2,000 acres on Warwick swamp.
Along present day Rt. 156 in Prince George County, west of that road and east of Rt. 310/I-95, is Lee Mill Pond which appears to be fed by the Great Warwick Swamp. Take the Carson Exit off I-95, turn left and left again on Rt. 156. There is also a housing subdivision known as Lee's Mill. The land on both sides of Lee's Mill Pond is nice, high land which has obviously been farmed in the not too distant past. Lee's Mill Pond appears to be home to a fishing club now. Rt. 156 is a straight shot north to Hopewell which in the late 1600's and 18th Centuries was known as Cittie Point. Between Lee Mill Pond and Hopewell, one crosses Blackwater swamp. Note that Samuel's grandfather, Hugh Lee, patented land "South of the Appomattox on the third branch of the Blackwater River."
Samuel's will is dated June 10, 1759 and his estate was inventoried on October 9, 1759 by his son Thomas.

In the name of God Amen the Tenth day of June one thousand Seven hundred and Fifty nine, I Samuel Lee, of the County of Prince George being sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God therefore Calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament principally and first of all I recommend my Soul unto the hands of God that gave it. And as for my body, I Commend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors hoping that at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same by the Almighty power of God, and as for such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my Son Samuel Lee Junr. Three hundred and thirty Acres of Land be the same more or less Beginning at the mouth of Bull Branch at a Sasafrass Corner thence down the great Branch to Leaths line thence along Leaths line to Bonners branch, thence up the same to a Corner White Oak thence along a line of Marked trees to the ready Branch thence up the said Branch to James McDuells line thence along the said Dowells line to a high land pond thence along the same to a small branch of the Bull branch thence down the same to the main Bull branch thence down the Bull branch to the Sassafras Corner where first began at Including the plantation whereon the said Samuel Lee Junr. Samuel inherited 600 acres from his grandfather, Samuel Lee, and had another 1,000 acres of own.
Prince George records show a survey of his estate of 575 acres next to James Baugh, Thomas Newell, Glebe land, mill pond, Great Branch and Bull Branch. Divided between Lodowick (80 acres), Thomas (178 acres), Chappell (120 acres) and Richard (198 acres).

Notes for SARAH CLEMENTS:
Sallie Clements married brothers, first Lodowick and then his brother Thomas. They were wed in Raleigh and then returned to High Peak Farm in Amherst County, Virginia. Thomas was appointed guardian of Alfred L. S. Lee who was over 14 by that time. Thomas and Sallie had five daughters, including Mary.
Sallie received a pension from the War Department on account of War of 1812. File 932215 at the War Department, Washington, D.C. She died at age 83.

Thomas Lee wrote his will in February of 1861, just after Mr. Lincoln's election and before his inauguration. Virginia was still in the Union, looking for a compromise to avoid the unthinkable. Thomas' will refers to his land, his money in the bank, and what appears to be a family of five slaves:
"In the name of God Amen! I Thomas Lee of the County of Amherst do hereby make this my last Will and Testament wrote (sic) with my own hand and hereby annulling all other wills heretofore made by me in manner and form following That is to say
Item 1st I leave unto my wife Sally Lee all my estate, both real and personal during her natural life with the the (sic) exception of legacies hereinafter made or mentioned Item 2nd I give and bequeath unto my five daughters towit Ellen L. Barbour, Mary E. Sandidge, Sarah Ann Lee, Rebecca Jane Lee and Maria Louisa Lee, the following named negro slaves towit William, Eliza and her three children named Lewis, Sam and Mack and future increase together with half of the money remaining in The Lynchburg Citizens Savings Bank at the time of my death to be equally divided among them and their heirs forever. Item 3rd I give and bequeath unto my aforesaid wife Sally Lee the other half of the money remaining in The Lynchburg Citizens Savings Bank together with all the other money due me at my death should the same be necessary to support herself and family and keep up the plantation, she being judge of the necessity with the exception of such money due me by any of the above named legatees. Item 4th It is my desire that my wife give unto any of my legatees any sum of money she may be able to spare, taking their bonds for the same to carry no interest. The sums together with the sums given or that I may hereafter give in same manner to be accounted for at the final division of my estate. Item 5th At the death of my aforesaid wife I will and bequeath unto my aforesaid five daughters all the estate both real and personal hereby loaned unto my said wife, Together with the increase or decrease as the case may be. In witnefs whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this first day of February one Thousand eight hundred and sixty one.

At a court held for Amherst County on the 16th day of May, 1864 a paper purporting to be the last will and testament of Thomas Lee decd. was produced in court and proved by the oaths of Wm M. Ware and Nicholas Hicks Two subscribing witnefses thereto and was ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Alfred Stith Lee who made oath thereto according to law and together with Joseph Pettyjohn his security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $20,000 conditioned according to law which is ordered to be recorded a certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration unto the will annexed of Thos Lee decd in due form.
