INDEPENDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS

The Independence Baptist Church was located on Rt. 826 near the intersection of Rt's 615 & 620 near Big A Mtn. in Russell Co., Virginia. These records run from 1894 up to about 1954. Some years are not complete and others are missing altogether. The records are being added as their transcription is completed. The transcriber, Maggie Oliver, is a descendant of Rev. Joseph Browning Kendrick, one of the pastors of the church.

July 7, 1894
Meeting of the Independence Church, held at the church house Russell Co, Va, on July 7, 1894. After the sermon preached by Rev, W. Buckles, upon motion Rev W. Buckles was appointed moderator protem, and Bro S. F. Combs was appointed Clerk protem. And upon motion the Church preceeded to elect, by ballot, a Pastor for said church; the Brethren and Sisters present having all voted, the tellors who were appointed to count the vote, reported that Rev, G. N. Kilgore had received the unanimous vote whereupon the clerk was instructed to notify the said Kilgore of his election to said Pastorate. Upon further motion, Bro S. F. Combs, was, by unanimous vote, elected Clerk of the Church, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Bro. Abel Musick.
No further business appearing, on motion the church session adjourned.

July 22, 1894
At a church meeting of the Independence Baptist Church held at the church house, on Sunday, July 22, 1894, The church having been called to order By Rev. G. M. Kilgore as moderator, whereupon the moderator read the following report to the church viz,
"Dear Brethern and Sisters in church, During the latter part of the month of November and the first part of the month of December 1893. I held a meeting at Finney, Va. within the bounds of your church which continued for twenty two days and resulted in thirty six conversions and twenty eight accessions to the church all of whom were, by one Baptised, except sister Ida Combs who has not yet been Baptized. July 23, 1894
At a church meeting of the Independence Baptist Church, held at her church house, on July 23, 1894, Rev G. M. Kilgore presiding as Moderator and Bro S. F. Combs, __ Johnson, Rev J. B. Kendrick and sisters, Matilda Johnson, Lizzie Combs, Loucinda Combs and Eliza Combs, were appointed a committe to ascertain and report to this church tomorrow, the names of all the members now belonging to this church.
On motion the church session adjourned to meet tomorrow.

July 24, 1894
At a meeting of the Independence Baptist Church, held at her Church house on the 24 day of July, 1894, Rev G. M. Kilgore, presiding as moderator and Bro S. F. Combs Clerk.
The committee who upon yesterday was appointed to ascertain and report the names ____ to the church. This day made it`s report in writing to the church which report was adopted by the church, and from which report it appears that there are now belonging to this church, __ 93, and 31 new members who have been added to this church during this present year, making in all a total number of 124 members. At the present time, and the names of all of said members as shown in said report is ordered to be recorded in the back of this book by the clerk of the church.
This church for several years past having been in a lanquishing and nearly lifeless condition, the Moderator made the inquiry whether there are any of the Brethern and Sisters who had not been living up to their Christian duties and priveliges, who desire to make any statement or confession to the church, where upon Bro S. F. Combs stated that given to the general ___ of the church and the want of a pastor he felt that he had not lived as consecrated as he might or ought to have lived, and in the future, by the help of God he would live a more consecrated life.
Rev J. B. Kendrick also said that he had not been living as he ought to have lived, that he had done many things he ought not to have done and had left undone many things which he ought to have done, all of which he was sorry for and hoped the church would forgive him, and by the grace of God he would live a more consecrated life in the future.
Bro H. S. Kendrick also ____ to the church that he had not been living for sometime as a Christian ought to live, that he had been acting so badly that he had often thought of asking the church to erace his name off the __, he now feels God has forgiven him, he was sorry that he had acted and done as he had and asked the church to forgive him, and that he was ___ in the grace of God, in the future to live a godly, consecrated life. Whereupon motion the church received the confessions and forgave the asking Brethern.
It being suggested that Mrs Martha Maxfield, member of this church, has joined the Methodist Church and upon investigation it was found to be true, and upon motion she was excluded from the membership of this church.
It having been reported that Brother John Stinson a member of this church, who now lives in Grundy, Va, is not living a consecrated godly life. Upon motion Rev J. B. Kendrick is hereby appointed a committee to investigate the charge against Bro Stinson, and report the result of his investigations to this church, at her September meeting.
On motion letters of ____ is granted to Sisters Celia Jessee and Charity Rasnake so they may join another church of the same faith and __ so do __and the clerk of this church __ __ __ church letters and send them to the Sisters.
It being suggested that Bro N. J. Ward and Ilsie Ward, his wife, members of this church, are not living the lives becoming Christians and church members, upon motion Bro Thomas Fletcher is hereby appointed a committee to investigate said __ charges and report the record of his investigations to this church at the September meeting.
On motion the church session adjourned to meet again o the last day of the present protracted meeting, which is now beening held Rev. G. M. Kilgore, moderator __ church.

August 2, 1894
At a church meeting of Independence Baptist Church at her church house in Russell Co, Va on the 2nd day of August 1894 at the close of the protracted meetings refered to in the minutes of the church session held July 24, 1894. On motion the church proceeded to elect delegates and attendees to represent this church in the New Lebanon Association which conviens with the Tazewell Baptist Church at Tazewell Ch, Va on Thursday before the fourth Sunday in August 1894. Which election resulted in the selection of the following named Brethern as Delegates and Attendees Viz, Delegates, S. N. Johnson, Rev J. B. Kendrick, S. F. Combs, E. R. Combs and B. J. Thompson. Attendees, Brethern H (or N). S. Musick, George Crabtree, Charley Combs, Aaron Johnson and Wade Taylor.
On motion until otherwise ordered it is agreed that this Church hold regular meetings in each month on the first Sunday and the Saturday preceedeng in each month.
On motion it is ordered that this church send by her delegates and attendees to the said Association Two Dollars and Fifty cents to pay for printing minutes for this church.
On motion it is ordered that the clerk prepare a church letter to said Association and deliver the same to some of said Delegates or Attendees to be then by them carried and presented to said Association together with the money for printing minutes.
On motion the church proceeded to elect Bro S. F. Combs treasure for this church. Upon the request of the Brethern and Sisters living in the vicinity of Finneys Siding and up, motion, It is ordered that an arm of this church be established at Finneys Siding for the purpose of receiving into this church members and transacting any other legitimate church, which any arm of a Baptist Church is authorized to do, by Baptist usage and action, and said arm of this church is authorized to elect an assistant church clerk and church treasure. Said arm of this church must keep record of all of their proceedings, and report the same to this church when it is required by the church.
Said arm of this church is hereby authorized to make arrangements with and employ the Pastor of this church to preach for them as often as they may choose or desire.
At the request of the moderator a collection was taken up, for various Baptist State Mission Boards, which resulted in cash received and subscribed to the sum of ___ which subscriptions are to be paid to Bro S. F. Combs of Bro S. N. Johnson between now and the Association.
The protracted meeting which has been held and continued with this church for the past twenty days by Rev G. M. Kilgore this day closed and as a result of said protracted meetings the church members was greatly warmmed up and revived, and many backsliders were reclaimed beside many sinners who claimed to have been born again and made new creatures in church. Harpin who has not yet been Baptized. And the clerk of this church is instructed to enter the names of said new members, except Bro Thos J. J. Harpin on the Church book of members.
On motion the Church session adjourned to meet again on the Saturday before the first Sunday in August 1894.

Sunday, June 3rd, 1900,
Church met at the hour appointed for services, prayer and sermon by Rev. T.H Thornton, from the twelve verse of the 13 chapter of Genesis. After which the church called Rev. J.B Kendrick. As moderator for the time being. Then the church was called to order and preceded to business. First the church agrees to pay the amount promised their pastor and monthly installments. Bro. Thornton then accepted the call of the Independence Baptist Church as pastor for an indefinate period of time. Then the church fixed the first Sunday and Saturday before in each month as the time of their church meetings and services to being at 11:00, On saturday and same on Sunday. The church then gave Bro. Thornton the authority to appoint all the commitees nessecary for the benefit of the church where upon S.F. Combs, J.L. Crabtree and Aaron Johnson were appointed on a finance commitee to seeafter subscriptions for the benefit of the pastor of the church then preceeded to elect S.F. Combs church treasurer requiring all moneys to be paid over to him for which he is required to recept for and pay over to the pastor. Then adjourned to meet as above stated.

Saturday, June 30th, 1900,
Church met as appointed, sermon by Rev. T.H. Thornton from 1st Gen 7th and 8th verses. Church called to order finance commitee, called on for a report and no one was present but S.F. Combs no report was made. Then the church moved to have a new enrollment of all the members of The Independence Baptist Church. Requiring each member to report any immoral conduct they may know any member to have been guilty of. This to be mentioned at the time of enrollment then appointed Bro. C.A. Combs to draft resolutions of respect to our departed brother Arthur Combs then adjorned to meet Sunday at 11:00. T.H. Thornton Pastor and Moderator,

Church met at the hour appointed, sermon by Rev. T.H. Thornton from the 2nd chapter, 11th and 18th verses of Nehimia then church door was opened, where upon D.W. Musick and Baswell Musick came forward and related an experience of grace and was recived by the church as candidates for the ordinace of Baptism. OBITUARY
Met his death on his way home from Finneys Siding, Russell County, Virgina, June the 14th, 1900. Caused as is generaly believed by the falling of a limb which from every appearance caused instant death; his neck found to be broken as was attested by Doc. J.M Taulbee. Arthur Combs son of Fielding and Jane Combs, was born October 15th, 1882. age 17 years, 7 months & 29 days. In as much as it hath pleased God in his infinate wisdom to call from our midst our dear Brother.
Arthur Combs from this low ground of sorrow and trouble, to come and see the grasses of the better land. It now becomes my painful duty to sketch words of respect to the departed Bro. and while I attempt to do this through sadness and tears, I recall to mind, but a few months ago when this Bro. professed Christ, came forward and united with The Independence Baptist Church and in obedience to the command of his Lord was buried with him by Baptism. From whence he arose to walk in newness of life. And it affords the writer of this notice great consolation to be able to state to the bereaved father and mother, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, that I was a fellow servent and partner with Arthur Combs in very many visits to friends in this county, consequently his walks and his life brought under my immediate observation, and while I realize my inability in attempting to set forth in words the true character of this young Bro. But due to his record will say, that during all my pleasent associations with him that he always expressed a desire to shun the company of drunken dissipated young men, of which country is so allarmingly scourged, his orderly walks, his pious and Godly conversation and consecrated life gave ammple evidence of his being an heir of God and a joint heir with our Lord Jesus Christ. And while I meditate on the past pleasant hours we have spent together, I must allow the sad thoughts to have their place. And that there is no trace in this world of the mortal remains of Arthur Combs but the cold and ___ hand and heart, now sealed in his earthly seplealchre with no rejoicing friends but the worms of earth, as they hold their midnight carnivals over the remains of this ever dear boy. But the question is now with us, oh what did death do for our dear companion and Brother, Arthur Combs and in the answer we are authorised to say by the help of God and his word, that it unlocked for Arthur the portals of Eternal life. And while his body rests in its narrow bed of earth, his soul is reclining in the bosom of God. Where it is forever freed from the carroding cares and sinful lusts of the world the flesh and the devil. And we are made to beleave from Gods word, that if we were permitted to hold converse with the departed soul of Arthur Combs, his first admonitions would be to tell father to make ready for that awful change which he must shortly make. And while we ______ as a church our deepest sympathies to the breaved family of our departed young brother, we want to insist upon all who knew Arthur Combs to try to imitate his christian virtues and to pass on the profession that he made like he did. And like his last farewell address he delivered to the last school he ever attended at Honaker Va. In which he admonished his school mates to so live christian lives, that if they never met any more on earth, they might meet in Heaven. so while the home of our friend Feilding Combs has been made sad and desolate; And the church and earth has lost one of its brightest and most useful luminaries, but while this is even so the church triumphant in Heaven has been made richer and the friends of Arthur Combs can truly say we have a treasure in Heaven and we meen to use him by and by. And for further consolation we know that Arthur hass conquered his last enemy, and long since sung the song of redemption, a song that the Angels cannot sing and took up his abode under the tree of life, on the banks of that crystal river flowing from God and the Lamb. With a body that will never be mutilated, mangled and gray with blood anymore, but will outshine the luster of the morning sun in his splendor, now looking down through the battlements of Heaven in order to catch the first glimpse of father and mother as they may be nearing their Heavenly home. So with the most loving sympathy for the distressed friends and relatives of Arthur Combs the foregoing words are most humbly and tenderly submited by,

Church met according to appointment, Sermon by Rev. T. H. Thornton after which the church was called to order. Moved that the Obituary of Br. Arthur Combs as prepared and read by Bro. C. A. Combs be admitted to record. Then received 6 Brethen and Sisters in the church fellowship as received by Bro D. C. Johnson. then granted,

(Note: The 12 Articles mentioned above are the 12 Articles of the Constitution of The Primative Baptist and these transcripts are the start of The Independence Church joining the Association at Lebanon of The Primative Baptist at the time when The Baptist Church split into two groups over fundamental differences, they became, The Primative Baptists and The Old Regular Baptists this split occurred around 1894)

Church met as appointed, Prayer and Sermon by Rev. J. B. Kendrick from the 26th chapter and 28th verse of the Acts of the Apostles, after which the church was called to order and received a number of Brethern, preparatory for the new list. Then adjourned to meet Saturday before the 1st Sunday in September.

Sunday Aug 4th, 1901
The church at Independence met at their usual hour for services. And after Prayer and Sermon by Rev. J. B. Kendrick, the church porceeded to appoint Bro J. B. Kendrick as Moderator Protem. The church was then called to order and proceeded to appoint delegates to the Association where upon the following Brethern were appointed, viz,

On motion of S. F. Combs The Church took up the case of Bro S.F. Combs, in which the Rev T. H. Thornton took advantage of Combs absence during a siege of sickness in which Combs was not able to attend church and regardless of Baptist usage on Church discipline made efforts to bring charges against S. F. Combs family, had they proved true would have brought lasting disgrace on said family, but from the action of the church and being acquainted with both parties, the church resolved to exhonerate S. F. Combs and family from all the intended slang, abuse and disgraceful language used by Rev. T. H. Thornton. So with gratitude and humble thanks to the Moderator, Brethern and Sisters of Independence Baptist Church we beg to remain your humble servants.

Saturday August 31, 1901,
No meeting on account of Brethern being called to the buriel of Ruben Compton in Buchanan Co, Va.

Sunday Sept 1st, 1901
Church met at 11:00. Services opened by Prayer and Sermon by Rev. J. B. Kendrick from the 26th chapter, 28th verse of the Acts of the Apostles. After which the church was called to order. Minutes of last meeting were read and abopted. Bro Kendrick was then called on for an answer in regard to taking charge of the Church as her new Pastor. So Bro Kendrick accepted the call of the church, agreeing to labor as Pastor for her from time to time just so long as the proper interest was shown on the part of the church members. Said interest to be shown by the church turing out on Saturdays as well as on Sundays and standing by and encourageing their Pastor, according to the direction as laid down by the great head of the church. Then adjourned to meet Sat. before the 1st Sun. in Oct, 1901.

Saturday Jan 4th, 1902,
Church met at time appointed sermon by Rev J. B. Kendrick from the 5th chapter and 20th verse of Matthew. Then called to order case of Bro J. T. Combs was taken up. The church motioned to exclude him for immorial conduct. The vote being taken, he was excluded for above charge, 2nd on motion of Bro Wade Taylor the church moved to appoint a committee to notify and require Bro S. N. Johnson to report to and give the church satisfaction in regard to different reports of immoral conduct against him whereupon Bro G. M. Crabtree was appointed a committee man for this purpose and to report at our next church meeting. Then adjourned to meet Sunday at 11:00.

Church met according to previous appointment, Services opened by singing, prayer and sermon by Rev J. B. Kendrick from the 1st verse, 5th chapter of Romans. then called to order by the Moderator, 1st minutes of last meeting read. Case of Bro S. N. Johnson taken up and on his own confession was exhonerated from the charges made aginst him. A collection was then taken up to secure an overcoat and other wants of our Pastor to be paid to S. F. Combs Clerk and treasurer. Which was as follows,

November 1913,
The S. S. (Sunday School) through November was better attended but is not organized and is in need of teachers.
There was no preaching service in this month after the 10th when the revival closed.
Rev F. H. Fuller was sick on the 5th Sunday and the ca________ were not baptised.

December 1913,
On Saturday Dec 6th at night according to public notice, Rev G. H. Wiley, who had come from Richmond, preached as he did several times on Sunday the 7th.
The church thought it well for Bro Wiley to preach at the Musick School House instead of the church for the week nights, he did this for ten days, preaching at Independence on Sundays. the results were blessed three more conversions and a great awakening among the Christians.
The following were received on confirmation of Faith from the meeting at Musick School.

At a meeting held at Independence Church Aug 7, 1915,___ meeting was called to order by our Pastor W. L. Henderson and on motion a letter was granted to Mrs Rebecca Lambert to unite with the Indian Creek Baptist Church. The Pastor also appointed a committee to confer with the Honaker Baptist Church to secure a Pastor; consisting of

August 8th 1915,
On Aug 8th 1915 at the close of a series of meetings by Bro A. R. Crabtree and Wm. Henderson Moderator and Pastor, the church door was opened for the reception of members and Bertha Rasnake was received as candidate for Baptism and a short time following, the said Bertha Rasnake was Baptised by the Pastor of Council where a number of others were Baptised and received into our church, and at the close of the service the Pastor announced he would have to give up the work at Independence Church an account of other work in the Field he had taken.

The church met according to announcement and had good singing and prayer from Rev J. R. Hubbard Pastor and Bro Jonas Rasnake and a very interesting Sermon by the Pastor and on conclusion the Pastor called for _____ or those desiring to be Christians when Miss Eddie Rasnake gave her hand for the prayers of all the Christians, Whence we had quite an emotional and hand shaking with a good attendence of church members and upon a vote taken, the church granted Mrs Alta Johnson a letter of transmission to join the Baptist Church of Somerset, Kentucky, then the meeting closed.

Monday Night July 28th 1918,
The church met according to announcement in a Revival Service and continued with two services daily for most of the time by our Pastor Rev J. R. Hubbard and Rev J. L. Crabtree where with there was a general awakening of the Christians all along through the meetings and several in attendance gave their hands for the prayer of the Christians and ____ ____ .

The Church met according to announcement with a small _____ ______ members present voted for a revised list of all the members of Independence Church as some have moved away and some died that there is ____, we do not mean to exclude members that wish their membership retained at Independence Church but want to make a correct report to the Association of all that is good members, and with a good Sermon by the Pastor the Service was concluded till in the morning at 11:00. At which time the service began by our beloved Pastor and after the sermon there was a collection for the benefit of our Home Mission Work, amt totaled $5.00, which was mailed to our Field Sect (cant read the name), Richmond, Virginia, and the meeting adjourned to the first Sunday in June.

B. Fuller and minutes distributed to the members present of the New Lebanon Association by the clerk.

Our beloved Pastor met with the Church at Independence and after a good Sermon announced his intention of his resignation on account of low attendance and loss of interest by the Church, on following a report to the New Lebanon Association of the membership at Independence for the years 1920 & 1921. The church met according to announcement and after a discourse by Bro Hubbard a vote was cast and Bro Hubbard was unanimously was elected Pastor of Independence Church for another year and was accepted by Bro Hubbard and appointment for the 4th Sunday in March also a vote was taken to grant Mrs Virginia A. Lambert a letter of dismissal for to unite with the Graham Church, Graham Va- which was granted by the church unanimously. Which on motion the service closed.

January 7 1924,
On Sunday January 7th the Church met and Bro J. R. Hubbard Pastor delivered us a very interesting Sermon and on motion by F. P. Rasnake Bro Hubbard was called and unanimously elected Pastor for another year which was accepted and announced Services for the 4th Sunday and Saturday night before the month of February 1924, and with Prayer the Service was closed. The minutes of The Association also was delivered to members present.

April 27th 1924,
On Sunday April 27th, 1924The Church met according to announcement and Bro Hubbard delivered an interesting Sermon and on motion a vote was taken and Sister Pansy Lockhart now of Independence Church was granted a letter of dismissal to unite with the Second Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia, and the request was for the clerk to send her her letter, on motion of the members present, which on motion the Service closed until the 4th Sunday in May.

May 25th, 1924,
On May 25th, 1924 the Church met according to announcement and with but few members present the Pastor delivered a very interesting Sermon and as there was no business transacted the service closed until the 4th Sunday in June.

On June 25th the Church met according to announcement and as usual we had a very interestingSermon by Bro. J. R. Hubbard. Pastor, and with a short talk by F. P. Rasnake on financing the Pastor for another year the Services closed and announcement was made for the 4th Sunday in July.

July 25th, 1924,
On July 25th, the Church met according to announcement and as usual a small number of members present and after a very interesting Sermon by our Pastor the Church porceeded to choose delegates to the Association to be held at Cleveland, Virginia on Aug 26 to 29th and on motion by the Pastor,

was chosen as delegates with this motion the services closed to reunite the 24th of August, 1924.
