Russell County Pension Applications, 1888


This is a list of Confederate Pension Applications filed in Russell County under the 1888 pension law. All were approved. This is an abstract, it includes the applicant's name and unit, and occasionally some additional information. The 1888 pension laws provided pensions for widows and those men who were wounded in the war. The pension would be reviewed by a judge who would forward his recommendations.

Branson, Rebecca - widow of Francis M. Branson, Company A, 29th Infantry, killed at Drewry's Bluff May 1863. Filed in 1888.

Caldwell, J.M. - Company K, 37th North Carolina Regiment. Filed in 1890.

Campbell, William J. - Company A, 16th Virginia Cavalry, age 67 years old, shot through hip at Jones Cross Roads in Maryland. Filed in 1891. For more info see Isaac Reynolds letters.

Cooper, William P. - Company C, 37th Regiment Virginia Volunteers, wounded at Chancellorsville. Filed in 1888.

Fields, A.F. - Company A, 16th Virginia Cavalry, wounded at Crockett's Cove, near Wytheville, 5/10/64, shot in right shoulder. Age 64. Filed in 1896. For more info see Company A, 16th Virginia Cavalry.

Fraley, Mary - widow of Martin Fraley, Company H, 50th Virginia Infantry. Died at Gettysburg. Pension filed in 1888.

Fugate, Jerry - Wiliam Lawson's Company, 13th Kentucky Mounted Rifles.

Garrett, Isaac J. - Company G, 29th Infantry. Wounded on 3/10/64 in a battle with a gunboat. Age 54 years old. Filed in 1897. Garrett's records say that he transferred to gunboat service in 1863. Apparently part of a chimney fell on him during a shelling.

Hackney, Catherine - widow of George Hackney, Company C, 48th Virginia Infantry.

Harris, Thomas F. - McElhany's Company(Co. C), 37th Infantry.

Jessee, Sarah - widow of Stanford L. Jessee, Company A, 29th Infantry. Killed at Middle Creek, Ky.

Munsey, Rebecca - widow of Charles D. Munsey, Company E, 6th Confederate Battalion.

Salyer, Isaiah C. - Company C, 5th Kentucky Regiment.

Smith, Edwin R. - Company G, 29th Infantry. Wounded May 18, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred. Age 70. Filed in 1899.

Suit, Nancy - widow of Stephen Suit, 16th Virginia Cavalry. Killed at Saltville. Married in Blountsville, Tennessee on 9/11/1857.

Sullivan, Nancy - widow of John Sullivan, Company G, 37th Virginia Regiment. Married in Lebanon in 1849.

Sutherland, Johnson - Company E, 1st Virginia Cavalry.

Vance, John G. - Company F, 10th Kentucky Regiment.
