QRYTEXT: Researching my mother's family has led me to Russell County, VA. My g g grandfather was Russell Musick, who was his father and mother? My g g grandmother was Elizabeth Musick nee Dowell, orphan of Fanny Dowell. Russell and Elizabeth were married Dec 2, 1834 in Russell County VA. Russell is found in the 1840 Russell County census. In the 1850 Russell County Census, Russell, age 37 wife Mary E. age 37, Calvin D. age 15, Robert B. age 13, Catherine age 11, Abraham H. age 9, Fullen H. age 7 (my g grandfather), Charles age 5, and Eliza age 3. The census of 1860 finds the entire family in Mississippi County, Arkansas, listing the same names minus Abraham H. and Catherine and an added 9 year old male (can't make out initials), all were 10 years older. According to Goodspeed the Russell & Elizabeth Musick family moved from Mississippi County to Alexander County Illinois just before the Civil War, where Russell and Elizabeth died, 4 days apart and are buried in said County. The children of Russell and Elizabeth returned to Mississippi County after the Civil War and one of those children was my g grandfather and so on and so on. I would really like to find out who were the parents of Russell Musick and Elizabeth Dowell's father, her mother was Fanny. Any help would be greatly appreciated

QRYTEXT: Calling all Postons!!! Where did Jorden(Jordan)Poston (Posten) go to? He appears in the 1850 Russell County, Virginia with his wife Sally and 8 children. He isn't listed in the 1860 Russell County, Va. census. The only Poston listed for 1860 is Solomon Poston, his son, along with his wife and two children. I'm wondering if the Julia Ann Poston (Posten) listed in the 1850 census as one of the children of Jorden and Sally could be the same Julia Poston that married a James Vicars (Vickers)??? Please, if anyone has Postons in their family tree, please respond if related to Jorden or Sally Poston. Their children as of 1850 were Solomon, Jane, Eliza, Harvey, Julia Ann, William, Margaret, and Robert

QRYTEXT: Isaac Moore, Sr. always listed his place of birth as Russell Co., VA, but he was b. in 1790 when Russell then included the entire tip of VA. He married Mary Polly Cantrell, who died about 1835. Isaac carved stone, and placed two layers around her grave. Each stone measures about 12" high, about 8" wide, and lengths vary from about 24" to 40" or so (have never actually measured...estimating only)and she is buried in Pike County, KY. Several researchers tell me they have seen other such graves in Russell County or in Tazewell County, but none remember exactly where, as it wasn't their family. Can anybody point me towards one or more of those graves? I would love to make some comparisons to see if the style is the same

QRYTEXT: From family Bible records I know that I am descended from a James BURKE/BURK b. 1 Jan. 1774, died 1 Feb. 1856, married an Annie Robinson of Russell County, VA. Annie was born 22 Dec. 1789 and died 10 Sept. 1861. They had the following children: Barbara, b 21 Dec. 1804; Thomas, b 16 April, 1807; William, b 10 Aug. 1809; Annie, b 30 March 1812; Sheffie, b 13 Nov. 1814; Betsey, b 30 Aug. 1816; James, b 17 Dec. 1818; Thirsa, b 30 May 1821; Pollie, b 24 Aug. 1823 and died Oct. 22, 1825; Charles W., b 8 June 1828; Christena, b 12 Oct. 1830 and John Calvin, b 15 Feb. 1833. I believe this large Burk family appears on the 1820 and 1830 Russell censuses. An elderly relative, now deceased, copied these names and dates from a family Bible. This large Burk family seems to be the one on the Russell cenuses of 1820 and 1830. Then they move on. Children Charles and Christena turn up in Pike County, KY. In the 1850 Pike census, Charles is living in the household of a Louisa Honaker, age 56, born VA, possibly widow of a James who appears on the 1830 census. Also in this household is Samuel Honaker, age 25, Isabella Honaker, age 20 and James Honaker, age 18, all born in KY. Pike Marrige bonds indicate Charles Burk married Nancy C. Adams, daughter of William Adams in 1855. They are married by Wm. McGuire, minister of the M.E. Church South, at the house of Wm. Adams in Pike Co, in the presense of Jas Honaker, (Hasbly? ) Lesley, Wm (Blabburn?) Pike marriage bonds file no. 974 has this listing on Christena: "License issued October 16, 1848 by John D. Mims clk for marriage of Elihu Hankins and Christena Burks, daughter of James Burks, consent being legally given by the said James Burk. Bond by Elihu Hankins and Andrew J. Ellis (most signatures apparently chewed up by mice). Letter, dated Octover 16, 1848, requesting license for "my daughter Christeania Burks to marry Elihu Hanks Esquire --" signed by James Burks and attested by Richard Ratliff and Charles Burk. Elihu Hankins and Christena Burk married November 2, 1848 by Rusal Clevenger." QUESTIONS: 1. Does anyone have information on where James and Annie moved on to, or such information on any of their children? 2. Can anyone give clues to the relationship between Charles Burk and Louisa Honaker; for instance, might the Burks and Honakers have been neighbors at some time in Russell County? Could there have been a marriage between the two families? 3. Does anyone have a clue as to who Annie Robinson's parents from Russell Co. were? 4. Does anyone know for whom Robinson's Ridge, just northeast of Honaker and Sword's creek is named? 5. Has anyone run across the very unusual first name of Sheffie/Sheffey? Could it be a surname from the area? 6. Does anyone know anything about the minister Wm. McGuire who marries both Charles and Christena? Could he also have been from SW VA? 7. Was there a James Honaker in Russell prior to 1830? Did he move to Pike? 8. Can someone with access to copies of the 1820 and 1830 Russell censuses tell where the large Burk family lived? Was it on Lewis Creek near Drill? Who were their neighbors? Any Robinsons or Honakers? 8. Why did so many folks from SW VA move to Floyd/Pike KY after the turn of the century. Too early for mining, so what was the draw? I have a million other questions but I will stop there in hopes this will provide some new leads. By the way, I have copies of the Pike Co.KY marriage records and the Floyd/Pike censuses from 1820 to 1860 if they could be of help to anyone

Also Looking for information on a James Honaker living in Pike County, KY in 1830. Believe Louisa Honaker who is head of household in 1840 and 1850 in Pike may be his widow. On The 1850 census Louisa is 56 year old, born Va. Ancestor of mine, a Charles Burk, age 22, also born Va. is a young man living with Louisa and her children. The other Honakers in the household (no. 868) are Samuel, age 25, born KY, James, age 18, born KY and James, age 18, born KY. Anybody recognize them or know why Charles Burk from Russell County, VA, would be living with them

NAME: Janet Powers Maune
EMAIL: budmaune@aol.com
DATE: Feb 14 2001
QRYTEXT: I have been researching the Peter Powers family of Wythe, Russell, and back to Washington County, VA by 1830 and would like to share with the researchers of the Russell County Powers/Rasnack/Counts/Music/etc families some possibilities that have come to light. Perhaps some of you in Virginia who are closer to the courthouses may be able to confirm or dispove these possibilities with other records.

My Powers family all appeared in Wythe/Grayson County (then Montgomery County) approximately 1780 with a David and Mary Powers (ca 1740) and a George Powers, Sr of Cripple Creek with early surveys and tax records 1782 and 1783. In 1790 George Powers acquired 100 more acres as assignee of Peter Powers showing some association with Peter. In 1803 George Powers Sr obtained a land grant on Cripple Creek for 300+ acres and in 1809 sold this acreage to Rev. John Stanger but reserved several acres for the Zion Luthern/German Reformed Church.

Peter Powers first moved to Russell County to the Sinking Creek area, sold to Henry Smith and then to the waters of the Clinch by 1810 just west of Glade Hollow. George Powers followed, sold to Henry Smith and then was in Glade Hollow by 1815 with 2 "dwelling houses". George Powers died in 1819 after deeding his property to George Powers, Jr in 1814 but his estate was not settled until 1826. At that time, George Jr and a second son, John Powers, moved to Lee County and then to Claiborne TN. The P. G. Fulkerson papers of Claiborne do say that George Powers, Jr came from Wythe Co about 1834 and his wife was Anna Lozier. Mary Hansard ("Old Time Tazewell")of Claiborne states that George Powers came to Claiborne not far from 1830 and that the family was of "Dutch" descent. The marriage records filed by Rev Stanger in Wythe County uses the names "George Bower and Anna Loutzer". The return was filed 1810.

The Zion baptismal records also record the name of the Powers family as Bowers using the German practice of substituting a B for a P. However, all land and census records are in the name of Powers.

There is a Michael Bowers/Powers and Elizabeth who baptized a son, John, born 12/23/1805 on March 1806 and a daugher Catherina born 11/5/1807 and baptized on 3/27/1808. Michael Powers was on the 1810 Census of Wythe County and then joined his family in Glade Hollow. Michael died in 1818 in Russell County and his widow Elizabeth appears on the 1820 Census of Russell County. At the estate sale of Michael the above Powers family gathered as well as for the sale of the estate of George Powers, Sr in 1826.

The descendants of a daughter of Peter Powers remember her as "fussing at her husband in German". From death records and census records George Powers, Sr was born 1762 and Peter Powers 1765 so therefore would be brothers and Michael Powers born apx 1780 is accepted as the son of George Powers, Sr but could also be a brother.

We also know from "Reflections... " by Hetti Sutherland that John Powers who married Sarah/Sallie Leece was born apx. 1804 in Wythe County, his father was John Michael Powers, he was raised and lived in Glade Hollow until 1841, and that "his people came from Holland."

The children and grandchildren of Peter Powers married into the Elexious Musick descendants and the next generation married into the John "Wes" Musick (Ephriams) family of Johnson County, KY. formerly of Washinton County, Va.

The above Wythe County records have been found in the published works of Mary B. Kegley of Wythe County. I am still in the process of identifying the unnamed children of the early census of Russell County but we do have an Archibald Powers, son of George Powers, Jr (TN historians) and a John Powers, son of Peter Powers (land records) and father of Jefferson Powers (baptismal records) and Mahala who remained in Russell County. The known Wythe county Powers family is quite large and I would love to share with anyone interested.

So how about it researchers? Do we have a match for John Powers and Sarah/Sallie Leece
