Jess McCall apparently came to Tazewell County from Washington County, Virginia with his brother, John A. McCall.. Jesse settled in Witten Valley and John in the community called Shraders. In the late 1870's, Jesse and his wife Mary moved into Tazewell, briefly, and then about 1880, went to Graham (now Bluefield), Virginia. He managed the Graham Hotel, was Post-Master, and the towns second Mayor. He was also a magistrate. SECOND GENERATION 2. John MCCALL Jr. was born in 1795. He died on 25 Nov 1837 in Washington Co., VA. QUESTION: Who is Rachel Sexton who died Feb 1866 and is buried in the ROBERTS Family Cemetery at Broadford, VA? She is listed in Helen Baylor McNeer's bible under "relatives who have died". John McCall Jr. was married to Eliza MEEK on 27 Mar 1824 in Washington Co., VA. 3. Eliza MEEK died on 25 Jan 1885 in Broadford, Smith Co, VA. She was buried in the Roberts Cemetery, Broadford, Smith Co, VA. ( After John McCall Jr.'s death in 1837, Eliza married John Roberts who died in 1873.) QUESTION: In Helen Baylor McNeer's family bible, under "relatives who have died" is an entry : Eliza Meek(writer thought surname was McCall), Nov 5, 1800-died 1805. Who is this person? Should death date have been 1885? Beside that entry is : John McCall born Nov. 1800-died Sept 1837. The two names are bracketed and beside that is written: "TWINS?" There is a question mark as shown. Are these two actually John McCall Jr.(died 1837) and his wife Eliza Meek(died 1885)? RLP 1/30/98 John MCCALL Jr. and Eliza MEEK had the following children: i. Frances Jane "Fannie" MCCALL was born on 23 Oct 1825 in Washington County, VA. She died 29/30 Mar 1892 in Washington Co, VA. ii. John Alexander MCCALL was born on 15 May 1828 in Washington Co., VA. He began acquiring land by grant and deed in present day Tazewell County, as early as 1795. He also owned lots in Jeffersonville (town of Tazewell) in 1800 and owned a drygoods and general store called "George and Co." He left a large estate at his death in 1810. He was married to Jane/Jennet PATTON in 1793. Jane/Janett Patton and William George had the following children: i. Henry Patton GEORGE was born on 21 Feb 1794. ii. John Boyd GEORGE was born on 31 Jul 1795. 1 iii. Col. Harvey (Hervy) GEORGE. iv. William?? "Oscar"?? GEORGE.

Jessie MEEK and Fannie had a daughter Eliza Meek who married John McCall jr. who died in Washington County in 1837. Eliza then married a John Roberts who died in 1873, and she died in 1885. Eliza and John Roberts are buried in the Roberts Cemetery at Broadford, in Washington County. Jesse Meek and Fannie probably had other children besides Eliza.

QRYTEXT: Looking for any background, such as birthdate & place, parents, ancestry, siblings (anything) of George MAY who was prob. of German descent. Possible birthplace may have been Germany, Pa., Md. or Va. Want to know who & (when bef. 1775) & where he married. Wife's name unk. The earlies I know of him is 1783 on the Montg. Co. Va. land entry Bk B pp. 1-5. He doesn't seem to be on the 1787 Va. census, unless he is the George MAY who was either in Shenandoah, Loudoun or Culpeper Co. He was on the 1789 Montg. Co. personal property tax list B. in the area of Reed Cr.,New River, Pine Run, & Poplar Camp area which was later Wythe Co. He may have been the George MAY on Samuel Ritchie's tax list in Russell Co. Lower Dist. in 1789-90. He was on Wythe Co. tax list C in Pine Run area in 1793. In 1794, he was listed as George MAY of Russell Co. when he sold 150 acres on both sides of N. Fork of the Holstein, which was then in Wythe Co. In 1795 he bought 157 acres on Pine Run in Wythe Co. He was on 1800 Wythe Co. tax list B. Bought 83 acres on Little Pine Run in 1808. On 1810 Wythe Co. census. Was exempt from paying county levy & poor rates in 1814. What was the age limit for exemption? Does anyone know? He died & left a will in Wythe Co. in 1819. Any clues or help whatever would be greatly apprec- iated in helping to solve this 40 yr. old problem. Thank you.
