James married Margaret Elizabeth Bumgarner in 1860. They had nine children one of which was Charles Henderson born March 3,1861 in Mason Co. VA (now WV). I cannot find any information on William and Elizabeth. My family sources have William coming from England. If you have any thing I would appreciate the help. From the association of names, I'm sure that Wm. Robert Tate b Jul, 1795(month calculated from age at death)is from this Tate family group. Also in Warren Co., TN is a Rev. I think his father was Robert Owens born about 1782 in Virginia, married Lenore Johnson.

I think his grandfather was Augustus Owens who married Elizabeth.

I have been unable to find much about Johnson Owens. I have found some deeds in the Russell County courthouse. I was told that he came to the area when the railroad was built. Supposedly he came on a white horse and bought quite a bit of property in Russell County at that time. Any help would be appreciated

QRYTEXT: I'm trying to figure out the family of John Thompson of Halifax County, NC who seems to have descendants in Russell County. One question I haven't been able to figure out is whether the William Thompson in Russell County is actually the son of John Thompson back in Halifax County.

This William is said to have been born in 1752. This means he would have been eight years old when his father's will was written in 1760. I'm puzzled by the fact that although other children in the will are specifically identified as minors, the William named in the will is not referred to as a minor. That seems a little strange since William does receive land from his father in the will.

Can anyone help with whether the William Thompson in Russell County really is the son of John Thompson in Halifax County, NC?

From the Heritage of Russell County Virginia 1786-1988, Vol. II page 179: "It is unusual that Spencer's bride, Elizabeth Finney, wrote her own marriage consent. It appears below.

"This is to let you know I am willing to have Spencer Breeding for my wedded husband given from my hand, Batsea Finnea (Betsy Finney), this the third day of August 1786." Witnessed by James Breeding.

In the marriage records of Rockingham County, Harrisonburg, Virginia, Book 1. page 169 Spencer Breeding and Elizabeth Finney's marriage is recorded. In the license her name is given as Elizabeth Finney. In another place her name is given Elizabeth Finnell, daughter of Thomas Finnell. It is also stated that she is "above the age of twenty one." Finell or Fennille is another way Finney was spelled. It has evidently been angelicized [sp.] as the name Breeding was.

ELIZABETH was born in Augusta Co, VA circa 1765. ELIZABETH was the daughter of THOMAS FINNEY. ELIZABETH died 31 Mar 1822 in Artrip, Russell Co, VA, at 56 years of age.

From The Heritage of Russell County, Virginia, Volume II, page 179: "Thomas Finney, Elizabeth's father, later moved with his family to Russell County. He settled at Finney on Thompson's Creek. Submitted by: Janette Breeding Askins."
