NAME: Anne Bays
EMAIL: inkerbay@aol.com
DATE: Mar 13 2001
QRYTEXT: I am searching for information about John T. (probably Thomas) Bays, born about 1846 in Russell County. John was the third of four sons born to Cynthia Bays, the probable daughter of James and Ruth Unknown Bays.

John T. was listed in both the 1850 and the 1860 Russell County census as living with his mother Cynthia Bays, grandmother (?) Ruth Bays and his brothers, George W. R., James K. P., and Edward.

I have been told that John was nicknamed "Big Red" and that he was struck and killed by a train, but I cannot find any information to verify this. I also can find NOTHING about John T. Bays between 1860 and 1889. I thought that he must have died young since I could not find him on any census or paying any personal property or land taxes, but then I found an 1889 Russell County court case where he and his two brothers, George and Edward sued Sarah Cumbo Bays, the widow of their brother James, for proof of a deed. In 1891 John signed a court paper saying he was satisfied with the settlement of the case, so he was still alive in 1891.

Can anyone help me find some information about John T. "Big Red" Bays? Did he ever marry and have a family? Where did he live and was he killed by a train? If he was killed by a train, there should be some kind of a report, but where

QRYTEXT: Is the Isaac Johnson, son of Benjamin, the same Isaac Johnson listed in the Russell County 1820 census? The Isaac on the 1820 Russell Co. census is listed as between 26-45 yrs old with two females under 10 and a female, presumably his wife, between 26-45. If the oldest child is 9, and they married shortly before this birth, they would have married sometime around 1808. Would this then be the son of Benjamin? There is a Benjamin listed as well, age above 45. I have an Isaac Johnson, abt.1770-1834. He bought land in Russell Co. (later changes to Tazewell Co. in 1799)along the Clinch River and Kents Ridge (present day Richlands area). He had 13 children with wife, Sarah. I believe this is the same Isaac that pays personal property tax starting in 1791 in Russell Co. He begins paying personal property tax in Tazewell beginning in 1800. He is also on the petition to create Tazewell Co. I'm sure this Isaac is related to Benjamin, Thomas and the other Johnsons in Russell. Isaac names one son Daniel and another, William. I notice two older Johnsons by these names in Russell. Any connection to these or any other Johnson's you know of? My ggGrandfather, William Cline/Johnson, was probably mixed in with Isaac Johnson's family in some way. Any help would be greatly appreciated

QRYTEXT: I visited yesterday the Fortner Cemetary which is located between Lebanon and Abingdon, near Hansonville. The address is listed as Rt 3 Lebanon. One grave in particular I was looking for was Lucy Fortner Moore - which I found. Unfortunately we could not read the inscription on the headstone. It looked to be some sort of poem or verse. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this cemetary had been researched and the tombstones transcribed. I know sometimes local historical groups do this. I would love to have this information for my family tree. Lucy Fortner Moore was the wife of William Franklin Moore and she died in 1903 after contracting pneumonia after taking her daughters to her mother's house to save them from drowning in a flood. THe cemetary is still located on the Fortner Family property. Thanks for any help you could give me
