LOCAL MAN KILLS BOY
Martin V. Woodsides Kills Fifteen
Year Old Boy With Shot Gun
Charles Chandler Victim Shot
in Chest Monday Night
SURRENDERED TO POLICE
Charles Chandler, age 15, was shot
and killed shortly after 8 p.m. Monday
by Martin V. Woodsides after the boy
was caught stealing cherries from a tree
at the rear of the Woodsides home on
South Holland Street.
Chandler accompanied by Oval Burton,
Tommy Anderson and Robert Whitlock,
went to the Woodsides home and climbed
the cherry tree and helped themselves to
cherries. Mr. Woodsides, who saw the
boys stealing the cherries, took his shot
gun and waited for them at the corner of
the alley. As the boys started walking
north in the alley Woodsides fired at them,
the full force of the shot striking young
Chandler in the chest. The boy died almost
instantly after being fatally wounded. He
fell a few steps from where he was shot.
After shooting the boy, Mr. Woodsides
walked up town and looked for night officer
Joe Hege to give himself up. He stated that
he had shot a boy and did not know until
afterward that the boy had been killed. Local
officers took Woodsides in charge and he was
later taken to Franklin by Sheriff A. R.
Mulkins and his deputy. Woodsides is alleged
to have stated after the shooting that he only
intended to scare the boy.
Woodsides is being held in the Johnson
County Jail at Franklin where he will probably
be slated on a manslaughter charge.
The boys who were with Chandler when
he was fatally shot escaped injury as they
were behind the Chandler boy when the shooting
occurred. The Chandler boy wore a white
shirt and could be easily seen in the dark.
After Woodsides reported the shooting to
the officers they had difficulty in finding
the body where it lay in the alley directly
behind the Albert Cox residence. After the
coroners investigation the remains were removed
to the Mutz & Holdcroft chapel.
Funeral Rites Wednesday
Funeral rites for the victim Charles Chandler
will be held from the Mutz & Holdcroft funeral
chapel at 3 p.m. Wednesday in charge of the
Rev. J. A. Sumwalt. Burial will be in Rest Haven
Cemetery here.
The boy is survived by the parents Lowrey
Chandler and Mrs. Clemie Hedger Slevin of
Edinburg; two brothers, Thomas and Forest
and one sister Elma Chandler at home and
other relatives.
The boy was born in Edinburg, Nov. 3,
1919 and lived here his entire lifetime.
