HOPE MAN KILLED AS CAR HITS POST, TREES
ALLEN B. COY, 31, VICTIM
An Atterbury Job Corps center adviser on his way home
to Hope after working late, was killed instantly early today
when his car went off the County Line road, east of Edinburg,
striking a fence post and two trees.
Injured fatally was Allen B. Coy, 31, of 125 Jackson street
in Hope, the father of two young children.
He apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car about
1:15 a.m.
The car hit the posts and trees at the home of John P. Pruitt,
Edinburg route 2.
One 4 by 4 inch fencepost hit first by Mr. Coy's eastbound
1963 Ford Galaxie sedan was snapped off at ground level and
sailed 132 feet through the air punching through a window
on a sun porch at the Pruitt house.
The post narrowly missed Mr. Pruitt who was sleeping on
the floor of the porch "to beat the heat". He had gone to
bed only minutes earlier.
After hitting the post the Coy car - registered to Mr. Coy's
father, Virgil Coy of Hope route 2 - slammed into two trees about
seven feet apart. The car, a total loss, came to rest facing the
County Line Road. No skid marks were observed.
Mr. Coy, the county’s fourth 1966 traffic fatality, was pinned
in the wreckage. Cause of death was not given immediately by
Dr. Kenneth Schneider, deputy county coroner, but Mr. Coy
had head and cheek injuries, a fractured left arm and multiple
cuts and bruises.
Mr. Coy was a resident advisor in the orientation section
at the Job Corps center northwest of Columbus, working a
7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift.
He had left on time Thursday night, Atterbury spokesman
said, but returned later to finish some work. He was believed
on his way home at the time of the mishap.
He formerly was employed by the American Insurance
Company at Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Norman
funeral home in Hope, conducted by the Rev. Ray Bozell.
Burial will be at the Hope Moravian cemetery.
Persons may call after 3 p.m . Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Coy was born in Bartholomew county Sept. 5, 1934,
the son of Virgil and Ruby Andrews Coy. He married the
former Miss Henrietta Schuchsrdt Dec. 20, 1955.
Surviving with the wife are two children, Allen Jr., 9, and
Robin, 7 both at home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Coy;
the grandmothers, Mrs. Bessie Andrews of Hope route 2 and
Mrs. Flossie Coy of Edinburg; a sister, Miss Carol Coy of Hope
route 2, and two brothers, Wayne Coy of Hope and Keith Coy
of Columbus.

Atterbury advisor killed in crash
Allen B. Coy victim; apparently fell asleep
EDINBURG - A 31-year-old Camp Atterbury Job Corps
resident adviser died instantly of injuries received early today
when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel en route home
from work.
Pronounced dead at the scene was Allen B. Coy, 31, Hope
route 2, who had been employed in the orientation department
of the Job Corps center for five months.
The one-car crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. today, about
two miles east of Edinburg on the Bartholomew-Johnson county
line road when the Coy auto smashed into two trees.
According to Bartholomew county Deputy Joe Kent, Coy
went to sleep at the wheel as he drove east on county line road.
Coy's car ran off the right side of the road, broke off
a four-by-four fence post which shot 130 feet in the air and
crashed through a window on the front porch of the John Pruitt
farm.
The fence post narrowly missed Mr. Pruitt who had just
gone to sleep on the floor moments earlier, police said.
After hitting the post the car continued about 25 feet,
striking two trees before it came to rest within 25 feet of
the two-story farm home.
Coy, the son of Virgil Coy, also of Hope route 2, is
survived by his wife, Henrietta, and two children, authorities
said.
Coy's death was the fourth traffic fatality of the year
in Bartholomew county.
The 1963 Ford Coy was driving was owned by his father.
It was reported a total loss by law enforcement authorities.
The crash also was investigated by state trooper Ron Miller
and Edinburg Deputy Town Marshals.
Funeral services are to be held at the Norman Funeral Home
in Hope at 2 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Ray Bozell.
Burial will follow at the Hope Moravian cemetery.
Calling hours are after 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral
home.

Allen Coy, 31, Accident Victim
Allen B. Coy, 31, 129 Jackson Street, Hope, was killed
instantly early Friday on County Line Road two and a half
miles east of Edinburg as he apparently fell asleep at the
wheel of his car while returning home from the Atterbury
Job Corps Center.
He had been employed at Atterbury since mid February
as a resident counselor, and had returned to work Thursday
night after completing a normal 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift.
Investigating officers reported no skid marks at the scene.
Coy's auto struck a fence post knocking it through the window
of a house, and then slammed into two trees after grazing a
culvert. Pinned in the wreckage, Coy suffered multiple fatal
injuries. The car, a 1963 Ford registered to Allen's father,
Virgil Coy, R.R. 2, Hope, was totally demolished.
The 4x4 fence post was thrown through the window of
a sun porch at the home of John Pruitt, R. R. 2, Edinburg,
about 1:15 a.m. Friday. Pruitt had just retired for the night
on the porch shortly before the mishap. He was not hurt.
Coy is survived by his wife, the former Henrietta
Schuchardt, whom he wed December 20, 1955, and two
children, Allen Jr., 9, and Robin, 7, at home; his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Coy, R. R. 2; grandparents Mrs. Bessie
Andrews, R. R. 2 Hope, and Flossie Coy of Edinburg; two
brothers, Keith Coy of Columbus and Wayne Coy of Hope,
and a sister, Carol Coy, R. R. 2.
He was born September 5, 1934, and graduated from Hope
High School. He at one time operated an insurance business in
Hope, moving to Columbus, Ohio, where he was employed by
an insurance firm before returning to this community last year.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Norman Funeral Home
with Rev. Ray Bozell officiating. Burial was in the Hope
Moravian Cemetery.
