Early Frederick County, then referred to as Western Maryland, was formed from part of Prince George's County in 1748 and, in 1750, gained a part of western Baltimore County.

It then included the present-day counties of Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Montgomery and the western half of Carroll County.

Pennsylvania lies across its northern border, and Virginia across its south-western border.
