This was the Loats Female Orphan Home, established in 1882 by John Loats; it was closed in 1956. Today, this is Frederick Heritage (a/k/a Frederick County Historical Society).

The Orphanage & Episcopal Free School was established by All Saints Church in 1838, partly seen on the left of Loats Orphanage, the brick building on the other side of the alley. Both buildings are on the south side of East Church St.

Orphanages were ended in 1958 when foster homes were considered a better option.
