SMITH, CHARLES HENRY [April 21, 1890 - December 30, 1959]
Charles Henry Smith, who was born in Schuyler April 21, 1890, a son of Charles H. and Adelaide
Smith, died Dec. 30 at San Jose, Calif., after a short illness, it was learned here this week.
Interment was in Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno, Calif.
The deceased was a cousin of Schuyler's Arthur Smith.
Mr. Smith was graduated from Schuyler High School in 1908. He was a musician, an organist at
the Methodist Church for many years, and a pianist. He taught in rural schools in the Schuyler
area, and in a number of Nebraska town schools before going to Montana.
In 1934, he was named co-ordinator of music for all the CCC camps in the Glacier Park area with
headquarters in Missoula, Mont. On one occasion he was given a Presidential Citation for
outstanding service by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was present at a concert given by
his group. At that time Mrs. Roosevelt autographed Mr. Smith's baton.
He was a veteran of World War I, and during part of his service he was in charge of the School
of Development at Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
In 1936 he married Mrs. Helen Merscheid, owner of a floral business at North Platte, Nebr.
They have lived in California the past 15 years, first at Richmond and at San Jose at the time
of his death.
Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. June Babb of Johnson City, N.Y.; three
grandchildren, Stephen, Susan and Michael Babb; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Baker of Burton, Nebr.,
Mrs. Edith Humphrey of Sutherland, Nebr.; and two brothers, Dale of North Platte, Nebr., and
George of Farmington, N.M.
He devoted much of his life to music and work with young people, and from a member of his
family it was learned that his moral and financial support made it possible for several young
people to obtain a college education. At the time of his death he was an active member of the
San Jose Philharmonic Society.
