Edward B. Waples, the senior of the firm of Waples, Platter & Company, the largest wholesale house in Denison, Texas,
is the only surviving child of a family of ten born to his parents.

He, too, sailed the seas, having shipped at the age of sixteen, as a cook on an Atlantic sea-going vessel, of which he became captain subsequently, and held command for one year, when he resigned and forsook salt water for the more agreeable occupations of land.

In 1836 he went to Howard County, Missouri; in 1838 he moved to St. Louis and in 1840 removed to Livingston County, Missouri, where he remained until 1877, when he came to Texas and for ten years resided in Sherman.

In the fall of 1887 he settled in Denison, where he has been engaged in mercantile pursuits ever since. In fact, ever since he quit the sea he has been engaged in merchandising, excepting only the time he resided in Sherman, where he was in the milling business.

In the winter of 1845, Edward married Nancy Graves, daughter of John and Matilda Graves, of Boone County, Missouri, and they have nine children, of whom five are still living—John, Paul, Addie, Fannie, and Mary.

Edward also has a large interest in the Bluff City Lumber Company, St. Louis, Missouri. With his wife, he is a strict member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and is regarded by the citizens of Denison as one of the most upright and valuable members of the community
