Tom Bean, Texas is located in the north part of Texas on the Cotton Belt Railroad between Commerce and Sherman. The man, for whom the town was named,  gave a 50 acre square plot for a town site.  In the 1890s, the railroad helped flourish the small town. The first settler was a doctor from Whitemound, John James Devine.  A.. J. Baxter built the second home in Tom Bean.

H. H. Stark was the first druggist.
Tom (Pap) Shively was the first blacksmith.
Morris Francis and the Weber brothers ran saloons.
Mrs. A. B. (Dixie) Firquin and Mrs. W. S. (Lee) Baxter ran a millinery shop and a dress making shop.
R. C. Elliott was the manger of the Lyon Lumber Company.
W. D. McAllister bought Dickson's Old Drug Store building.

In 1913, a fire burned the Farmer;s Union Store, Barber shop, Richardson's Grocery store, post office and Tom Bean Times Building.  W. A. Van rebuilt the furniture store in 1913.

The Tom Bean Times was established in 1913.  T. C. Curtis was the publisher many years.  The first publishers were brothers, Russell and Donald Bryant.

The old courthouse was purchased by Arthur Pennell and put in a picture show. Bella and Faira Moran ran a meat market and restaurant.  J. W. Johnson ran a dry goods store.  Dr. William Jackson was co-owner with Johnson.  Lyn Williams owned and operated the first cotton gin.  K. Blanton bought out Williams.  Scott Bruce and Si Mulkey ran a gin in Tom Bean.  J. F. Davis and Cal bernard operated two hotels. Pat Luby and George Lackey owned a hardware store in 1908.  

The first child born in Tom Bean was Bessie Harrell, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Willis Harrell.

The jail was located west of the Justice Courthouse.  The first peach officer was Floyd Simmons.  The first mayor was Ice B. Reeves.
