His 'Hospital Card' at Ancestry.com
Adds this; Killed in Action
But doesn't say what killed him.
The Hospital Cards are filled out after the battle subsides and they
remove bodies ( and wounded) from the battle field. They
note the identification and observe what they can of what killed them.)
Since he was in an Artillery unit even concussions from the artillery can cause death unknown.

687th  Artillery Unit.

They had left the US for Europe in Jul 1944

They landed on Utah Beach on D Day
They fought through Normandy and Brittany.
They went to Luxembourg and Kept on battling each area they passed through. His unit had been in the Battle of the Bulge which ended in Jan 1945. They continued the push into Germany along with the huge war line of all Allied military.

He was buried in an American Cemetery created for the war dead, usually not far from the Battle Field
and sent home in 1949 and buried in
WEST HILL in Sherman.
The website for the Gold Star families says he was DNB-died non battle
but this form says he Died in Action. I have not been able to find another article about him.
