They carried Tanks, wheeled vehicles, artillery equipment.
Note the cranes used to offload materials and vehicles had a way off.
It was hit by torpedoes from German Torpedo Boat (E- Boat) off of Devon shore, England.

Everyone in the rear of the ship were killed or badly wounded. 13 men died. James W Chandler was listed first as MIA. Then as KIA.
He was a Gunners Mate so the upended turret in the photoraph is likely where he was.
They were practicing for D-Day (June 6th) The 'operation' was called Exercise Tiger (1944)
