His shows a mistake. He was reportedly killed on Jan 3rd, but the battlefield medics dated his death as in Dec 1944.
He died of artillery shell blast effects-In the line of duty.
It was deep winter at the time and a huge battlefield and forest, it was hard probably to tell exactly when someone died.
