The USS Savannah was Support to the
Invasion
at Sicily at Salerno, and was protecting
soldiers landing crafts on the beaches
of Sicily. The ship was hit by a Fritz X
radio guided bomb. Two hundred crew
members were killed. More were
injured and many trapped in the wreckage
for 60 hours.
The wreckage was repaired and the ship
rejoined the war in 1945.
