Alfred Martin Nicholas Jr 11 Mar 1923 - 18 Aug 1943 Navy - Seaman 2nd Cl Serial Number 3572686 USS Abner Read (DD-526) This ship hit a mine off Kiska Island (Japanese occupied), on an Anti-submarine patrol. on 18 Aug 1943. The whole stern was blown off. It tells how the men died. 70 killed. 47 wounded, 1 missing. He was found and brought home.  More about this ship at the bottom of the page
Buried in West Hill Cemetery The part he was buried in was once called Memorial Cemetery He was in a temporary grave and brought home in 1948.  In 2018 the Stern was found This shipwreck was from the only WWII battle in the US off Alaska  It was rebuilt after the accident and it was sunk in a battle in the Leyte Gulf.
