When he died in the B-17G he was a ball turret gunner.
He likely managed both positions.  They were specially picked
and had to be small enough to fit in the confined spaces they worked in .
The tail gunner had squeeze in tight spaces also. Ball Gunners usually could not wear their jackets because of the space problem.
