Was Betrayed by a Letter
Sheriff is here in route after alleged murderer
Young Fellow's Whereabouts Unknown Till He Sent a
Picture to His Girl and His Location Then Became
Known.
Sheriff Russell, of Grayson County came to El Paso
last night on the T & P, en route to Whatcom
County, Washington, where he is going to take into
custody J Searles, wanted on a charge of murder in
Grayson County, committed last December.
Searles and a companion, it is alleged, one night
were reprimanded by a church deacon for disturbing
the peace of the congregation. The young men were
overheard, it is said, planning to get even with the
deacon, and stationed outside the door, some one
struck him over the head, inflicting injuries from
which he died in a few days.
Searles and companion left as soon as the assault
was committed, one going east and the other west.
Searles' companion was captured a few months ago in
the mountains of east Tennessee, but no trace could
be found of Searles, until a few days ago, when he
sent his sweetheart a letter. The Sheriff became
aware of the man's location and immediately
telegraphed the officers of Whatcom County to arrest
Searles, which they did, and wired to Sheriff
Russell to come for the prisoner.
Sheriff Russell expects to return through El Paso
with his prisoner the latter part of next week.
