Sarah "Sally" Mowry (or
Mowery) Hoover Goodman - Mother of
Nancy Hoover Clountz, wife of Marion
Clountz, Grandmother of Henry Eugene
Clountz, great grandmother of
William Clountz.
Nancy Hoover Clountz came
to Texas in 1877 where they first lived in
the Oak Grove community between Denison and
Pottsboro, and later moved NW of
Pottsboro. She was a lifelong member
of the Methodist church. She died at her
home near Pottsboro at 8:30 am. Burial
was a Oak Grove cemetery, George Shields,
funeral director, officiating.
Sarah Ann 'Sally' Mowry, 1829
in Virginia - Died abt. 191 to 1904
Sarah Sally
Mowery Hoover Goodman is known as the "Stump
Woman," of Georgetown Cemetery.
All she had for a grave marker until
2013 was a Bois d'Arc fence post as a
gravestone. It was in the NE corner of the
Georgetown Cemetery, next to the three young
children of Alex and Doll Moser.
Her new tombstone is below.
She married
(1) Thomas Nicholas Hoover, February 29,
1848 in Pendleton, Virginia, son of
John Hoover and Mary E. He was born
abt. 1824 in Virginia and died after 1860
in Pendleton Co., Virginia. She
married (2) James Goodman abt. 1866 in
Pendleton, Virginia?. He was born
1840 in Virginia.
Notes for
Sarah Ann Sally Mowry:
I found the 1850 census for Thomas and
Sarah Hoover in Barbour, Virginia,
ages 26 and 21, with children Anthony
and John (John died in 1856 of
Scarlett fever).
In the 1860 census in Pendleton, Virginia
- Thomas and Sally Hoover, ages 36 &
30, with children Anthony, Nancy age
8, Susannah age 5, Rebecca F. age 4 &
Geo. K, age 2 (Who both may have also died
later since they are not seen
again). The Nancy here would be the
right age - born in 1852. After 1860
Thomas Hoover is not heard from again that
I can find, he may have died too, reading
between the lines. There are other
Thomas Hoovers, but not the right age,
wife or children. I think he
died between 1860 and 1870 and Sally
remarried.
In 1870, with the Hoovers we see
James Goodman, age 30, working on a farm
& married to Sally who is about
10 years older than him in Pendleton with
children, Elizabeth (with James as
father), Susannah Matilda and Laban
Hoover.
In 1880 in Pendleton, living around Sally
are Hoovers' and Mowerys' as their
neighbors, again in 1880 Pendleton - there
is James Goodman, laborer, and Sally
Goodman, married, ages 40 and 50, with
Tilda and Laban Hoover listed as
step-daughter and son, as well as James'
children, Alitha Elizabeth, age 11 and
Isabella, age 9, listed as daughters.
By 1900 Sally Goodman is listed in
the census as living in Pottsboro, Texas
with the Clountzs. So James must
have died between 1880 and 1900; her
children were all grown and Sally came to
live with her daughter Nancy. That
seems like the most likely scenario given
the evidence.

Nancy
Hoover Clountz Family Tree & Chart
"In the Hoover family line of
mine there has been confusion due to
there being so many people with the same
name in one short period of time in the
1700s, namely - Sebastian Hoover from
Germany, born in 1723.
I have figured it out about
the confusion about Sebastian Hoover,
the one in our line is the one born in
Germany in 1723, He had a LOT of
children, he had a child named Sebastian
in 1750 who died in 1780 and
either Sebastian SR. had another son in
1780 and named him Sebastian (3)
also, in honor of the son
Sebastian Jr. who just died OR
ELSE Sebastian Sr. adopted
the late Sebastian Jr.'s son
Sebastian who was born the same year
Sebastian Jr. died - 1780.
But there is a Sebastian the Third
that is considered a son in
Sebastian SR.'s family whichever way it
is. They are in our direct line,
the one in ours is Sebastian
Hoover 1723's son Thomas Hoover
born in abt. 1758, who had a son named
John Hoover in 1798 who had a son Thomas
Nicholas Hoover in 1824 and
married Sarah "Sally" Mowery (or Mowry)
and had a daughter named Nancy
Hoover in 1852 who married
Marion Clountz who fathered Henry
Eugene Clountz who fathered
Henry Sherman Clountz who was my
father."
