On the wagon trip, the two youngest
daughters were given the "best bed" - the
top of the kitchen table that James and
Nora were bringing with them.
Jim worked for
Clyde Wyble on a farm near Riverside. Mr.
Wyble furnished them with a house to live
in, gave them the last cotton crop of the
season, and gave the a team and wagon for
one year's labor. Their fifth daughter,
Fannie Mae Cook, was born on September 28,
1914.

Jim moved his
family to the Harris place in
Locust. Here their only son,
James Waterson "Budo" Cook, was born
June 18, 1921. The children attended
the Locust School. Next, the family
lived on Miss Jewel's place near
Locust. In 1924, Jim moved his
family located near Locust on what
is now Locust Road and Cook Corner
Road. The house was owned by Joe
Barrentine. Here, Jim
raised peanuts, dew berries and
sugar cane to make their own syrup.
The children attended Overton
School. When this land became
available to purchase, Jim Cook
wanted to buy it but was unable to
get enough money to buy it before it
sold. They lived here
until 1941. Alvin
Cook, Jess Cook's son, purchased the
farm and moved in when Jim and Nora
moved onto land they had purchased.
In 1940, Jim and
Nora cook purchase land on what is
now Cook Corner Road from their
daughter, Ruth, and her
husband, J. C. Elmore. It was part
of the James Strickland survey,
abstract number 1068, described as
from the Estate of J. H. and Ella S.
Hash. Here Jim began building the
house he and and Nora would live in
for the remainder of their lives.
They moved into their new home in
January 1942. Nora wrote a
letter on January 29, 1942 to her
daughter, Ruth, who was living
in Miam, Arizona.
"
. . . we have got our house built
and moved into it. I like the
house very much but I don't like
where it is built. It is built
right in front of the spring. All
we have to do is step out of the
front door and dip up water."
