Eliphaz Green Berry
Shelton:
Eliphaz
Green Berry Shelton, born
08 Dec 1837 in Fayetteville,
Lincoln, Tennessee; died 06 November
1926 in Fayette, Lincoln Co.,
Tennessee, the son of
Joshua Shelton & Mary
Noles. He married Mary Ann
Luttrell 30 March 1859 in Fayette,
Lincoln Co., Tennessee.
Mary Ann Luttrell, born 03 April
1842 in Fayette, Lincoln Co.,
Tennessee; died 02 December 1917 in
Honey Grove, Fannin Co.,
Texas. She was the daughter
of Vincent & Lotta
Luttrell.
According
to research, Eliphaz enlisted in
Co. A, 44th Tennessee Consolidated
Infantry. He was listed as a deserter
on Dec 5, 1863, and appeared on a list
as a Rebel Deserter who has
voluntarily taken and subscribed the
oath of allegiance to the U.S.
Government at the office of F. Young,
Deputy Provost Marshal of Roane
County, TN. So, it appears that
he served on "both sides" during the
War Between the States.
Also,
I would like to note here that
during my quest, I found many
Shelton men who were listed as
casualties during the American Civil
War. I also found that one
brother sometimes served for the
Confederacy, while another served in
the Union army.
