Knaur's
Grocery
Abraham Lincoln Knaur was
another son of George E. Knaur Sr. Before
1900, he lived with his parents on West Bond
Street beyond Denison's city limits. He first
appears in the Denison City Directory in 1896
as proprietor of The Cash Grocery at 429 West
Main Street.
In 1899,
Abraham married a teacher, Ireline Walker
(1864–1922). She was the sister of Dr. H. T. Walker,
dentist, and aunt of Mildred Walker, longtime
teacher at Denison High School. She lived with
them at 912 West Gandy. Abraham and Ireline
lived next door at 910 West Gandy. By 1901, he had A. L. Knaur Groceries at 316 West Main Street. His younger brother, George Ernest "Ernie" Knaur Jr., was working as a clerk in the store. By 1905,
the store, still at 316 West Main, had morphed
into Knaur-Brown Grocery Company, as William E.
Brown became Abraham's partner. George Ernest
was living at 1331 West Gandy, with no mention
of his occupation. ![]() "A. L. Knaur's Grocery 316 Main Street." Robinson, Frank M. comp. Industrial Denison. [N.p.] : Means-Moore Co., [ca. 1909]. Page 90 In 1911, he had his own grocery store at 1000 West Crawford. George Ernest Knaur and wife, Lillie Beatrice Shannon Knaur (1873–1954), lived nearby at 914 West Crawford. By 1911,
Knaur-Brown Grocery Company, still at 316 West
Main, was changing. Abraham was president,
brother Schuyler C. Knaur had come on as
vice-president, and William E. Brown was
secretary-treasurer. Then, in
1912, Abraham and Ireline moved to Dallas. The
store became William E. Brown, Grocer. He and
wife Lillian D. Brown lived at 1208 West Sears.
Abraham's
brother, George Ernest Knaur, continued in the
grocery business in Denison, in 1915 having
moved across the street to 931 West Crawford. He
passed away in 1916. His wife Lillie ran the
business herself for a while, then retired and
made her home at the store's location until the
end of her long life in 1954. In Dallas, Abraham joined W. H. Potts in the leather business. At his death in 1930, he was vice president of the Potts-Knaur Leather Company and the Gripper Manufacturing Company. ![]() Biography Index Susan Hawkins ©2025 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
