Page 4

By 1893 Professor Lewis was living in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, west of Ft. Worth and a little more than 60 miles southwest of Denton.  The 1900 census for Precinct No. 1, Weatherford County, Texas, dated June 19, 1900, lists George P. Lewis, 48, as a teacher in the public schools, living with his family on West Bridge Street.  Hattie, 38, is a teacher in the public schools as well.  She and George had a 3 years old son, Albert H., born in September 1896; George's older son by his first wife, George A, 24, was married with a daughter and son, all of whom are living in George and Hattie's household.

George P. Lewis died on January 2, 1909 and is buried in City Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford, Parker Co., Texas.

MORTUARY
Weatherford, Texas, January 2 - G.P. Lewis, one of the best known and most generally respected negroes of this city, died suddenly last night of heart trouble.  He was formerly Principal of the Negro schools here, but of late years had been engaged in the junk business.

Eldest son George A. was a physician; he had apparently attended school in or near Washington, D.C. as his wife was born in Virginia; their oldest child was born in 1895 in Virginia and their second child was born in Washington, D.C. in 1897.  Their third child was born in Texas about 1901 but by 1910 the family had moved to Chicago where they remained.  Annie died in November 1934; six or seven months later Dr. Lewis was sued by Mr. Dwight Jones who alleged the doctor had alienated the affections of his wife.  The 1940 census shows that Mrs. Jones, 34, had married Dr. Lewis, 65. The article is at the bottom of this page.

Dr. George Lewis' oldest son, George Cecil, also became a doctor, graduating from Rush Medical College, Chicago, after attending the University of Chicago where he was the third African-American to earn a varsity letter in track.  He was the only African-American on the 1919 University of Chicago's track team.

Dr. Cecil Lewis died in Danville, Illinois at the age of 55 in 1954, five years before his father.

Dr. George A. Lewis died at the age of 83 in 1959 in the "windy city" where he had been a physician for 50 years.

Prof. George P. Lewis' younger son moved to Portland, Oregon by 1921 and was employed by the City of Portland in the fire department.  Alfred married Edwina Carroll in 1921 and Minerva Gilpatrick in 1932.  Alfred H. Lewis and his wife, Verna Castle, married each other at least four times - 1936, 1944, 1946, December 1961 - according to Oregon records.  Apparently Alfred changed his race after moving to Oregon.  The 1940 census and marriage records #2-#5 list both Alfred and his wife as "white".
