The Stalcup Saga
(as it pertains to
Grayson
County, Texas)
Isaac
Stalcup was the sixth Stalcup sibling to
eventually reside in Grayson
County,
TX. The second oldest of Moses Stalcup's 14
children, Isaac was born in
Cumberland County, Kentucky on February 3,
1820. Isaac had been
but a year old when his parents relocated to
McMinn County, TN where he grew to manhood. Miss Glaphrey Heard
became "Mrs. Stalcup" in 1846 and
the couple raised 12 children (5
sons, 7 daughters) in eastern
Tennessee: Sarilda L; Mary Helen;
Missouri Elizabeth; John Riley; Lucinda
Musadora; James L.; Theodosia
Emeline; Moses E.; Miriam D.; William L.;
George H.; and Addie L.
Isaac
himself didn't move to Grayson County, Texas
until 1896. However, his
branch of the family was represented there
in 1877/1878 with the
arrival of Isaac's daughter and son-in-law -
Sarilda (Stalcup)
and Charles Medearis - with their two
young children.
Although not a "fact" it is highly
likely that the Medearis
family had traveled from Tennessee to Texas
with her paternal relatives
- Levi, Chris, Fannie and Grandma Nancy - in
1877/1878. Charles
and Sarilda chose to settle in Kentucky
Town, Grayson County, TX.
In late 1880/early
1881 Isaac, Glaphrey and most of their other
children headed to Texas.
They stopped just
short of settling Grayson County
though. At the time, brother
William Stalcup was located farther west,
near Whitesboro, and John,
Levi, Chris and Fannie near Pottsboro.
Isaac chose instead to
settle his family near Lindsey School House
(now Randolph)
- which is in the southwest area of Fannin
County, Texas. Daughter
Musadora married Madison Johnson in Fannin
County in 1881. "Matt"
and "Dora" moved to Pottsboro in Grayson
County where they lived until
the birth of their oldest child Roy in 1883
and then they returned to
live in Fannin County. Charles and
Sarilda also moved to Fannin
County about that time.
The
(large) Stalcup family had contributed to
the Grayson County economy
for a full 15 years before Isaac and
Glaphrey ever resided there.
During the 1880's and early 1890's the
growing community of
Whitewright was the nearest place of
commerce for them and enjoyed the
Stalcup patronage for many years.
Isaac and Glaphrey were no
longer in their "first blush of youth" in
the mid 1890's and
had reached a time when they could
no longer live independently in their own
home. When son
Moses chose to move his young family to
Whitewright the practical
solution was to include his parents
in his household. From
Whitewright they soon made their way several
miles
south to Pilot Grove. Isaac Stalcup died
circa 1901-1903 and was buried
in the
Lindsey-Randolph Cemetery in Fannin
County. Glaphrey
resided off and on with different daughters
until her death in
Randolph, TX in 1921. She is also buried in
the Lindsey-Randolph
Cemetery.
