...In
the afternoon, Mat White, a colored barber
was brought before his Honor
charged with disturbing the peace by
fighting and with resisting an
officer. It seems that Mat White
created a rumpus in Brenner's
saloon, and being ordered out, commenced to
fight Brenner and others;
also laid violent hands on the Marshal.
He requested that the
trial be continued until to-day which was
granted.
According to
the 1880 Denison census, "Mat" White is 26
years of age and was born in
1854 in the state of Missouri; his race is
listed as "Mulatto" and his
occupation is "barber". Residing in
his household are his
wife, Mary, aged 22, and four
children: daughter, Adlade, age
7; daughter, Anna, age 5; and son, Frank,
age 2 - all the children were
born in Texas.
