Mary Janice Cole was born November 23, 1924 in Gainesville, Texas to the late Clarence and Mary Ellen (Fox) Cole. She graduated from Sherman High School in 1942. Afterwards she attended Austin College for one year and then worked at Hardwicke-Etter. She married her high school sweetheart Howard A. Hestand Jr. on April 7, 1946, after he completed his naval service in World War II. After Howard's graduation from Austin College in 1949, they moved to Austin where Howard attended pharmacy school at the University of Texas. While in Austin, Mary worked as a bookkeeper for the Texas Highway Department and the Railroad Commission. She returned to Sherman in 1952 when her husband returned to work in the family business, Hestand Pharmacy.
Mary had a lively mind and a keen love of learning which she passed onto her two daughters. She was a great lover of all of the arts and worked on honing her own artistic skills for many years. She was also an avid student of antiques and of the history which they represent and she taught her daughters to value these things highly as well. She was a faithful, long-time member of the Western Heights Church of Christ and demonstrated the example of steadfast faith to her family. She had a good sense of humor and was great fun to be around.
Mrs. Hestand is survived by her husband, Howard of Sherman; two daughters, Cynthia Hestand and her husband, Haskell Hestand of Dallas and Janice Barris and her husband Benjamin of Beeville, Texas; two grandchildren, Emily Abigail Barris and Nathaniel Caleb Barris; and one brother, Wayne Cole and his wife Grace of Sherman.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Friday at Waldo Funeral Home. The register book can be signed online at waldofuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to the Western Heights Church of Christ Children's Ministry at 800 Baker Park Drive Sherman, TX 75092 or to Home Hospice of Grayson County at 505 W.
