Mrs. N.J. Houghton, for many years a resident of Sherman, passed away quietly at her home at 510 South Walnut street, Saturday afternoon, at the age of 84 years.
Mrs. Houghton was the widow of the late B.R. Houghton, Mexican war veteran, and pioneer citizen of Sherman.  She was a native of Arkansas and had lived for 57 years in Texas.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Miss Kate Houghton and Mrs. W.H. Brent; a granddaughter, Mrs. Allen Birge; sister, Mrs. Mary Markham; 2 nephews, Read Markham and Dr. H.W. Sigmond, of Indiana; and a niece, Mrs. W.E. Hedgcock of St. Louis.
Funeral services were held from the family residence Sunday afternoon, conducted by Bishop A.C. Garrett of Dallas, and Rev. W.J. Miller, rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal church.  Burial was in West Hill cemetery.
