LaWard Notes

The heavy rain last week end gave the farmers in this section an aggravated attack of blues.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton visited Palacios and Bay City one day last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Harper and Mrs. C. J. Farquhar were Palacios business visitors Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnny White of Blessing are opening a meat market in the Boyd Café. We wish them success in their new home and business venture.

Two new pupils entered the LaWard school Monday which brought the enrollment of the school up to 89.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle and Mrs. W. G. Gayle and Mrs. R. P. Farmer spent last Thursday night in the A. J. Stayton home.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob McFeron spent Saturday night at the A. J. Stayton home.

Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Boyd and family spent the week end with their daughter in Hempstead.

Mr. Hunt was called to Louisiana Saturday by the illness of his mother. We trust he found her condition improved.

Mrs. W. B. Gayle spent the week end with homefolks in Blessing.

Mr. and Mrs. Covey Walker spent Sunday night with Mr. and Mrs. Bob McFeron.

Mrs. Bob McFeron is on the sick list we regret to state.

Mr. W. G. Gayle and Mr. Foreman who have been working on the Hug-the-Coast highway, with their families returned home Sunday, due to rain.

Mrs. Varna James is sending some with homefolks in Chapel Hill.

Houston James returned home Saturday from a visit to Houston.

Mrs. A. J. Stayton and daughter and Mrs. W. B. Gayle visited in the home of Mrs. E. T. Joines one night, last week.

LaWard H. D. C.

The LaWard Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. Sam Johnson Feb. 16th, 1932. The club was called to order by the president and the club pledge and prayer were repeated. The roll was then called by the secretary. Those answering present were: Mrs. I. W. Sears, Mrs. J. W. Lee, Mrs. B. A. Buckhorn, Mrs. J. H. Hunt, Mrs. H. Parker, Mrs. M. E. Hess, F. Thomas, Mrs. L. O’Neal, Mrs. Sam Johnson, Mrs. R. E. Coffin, Mrs. J. R. Myrick and one new member, Mrs. B. H. Deatley.

The club was made sorry by the loss of one of its most faithful members, Mrs. L. A. Geren. We wish her well in her new home.

The meeting was turned over to the Program Committee. A talk on “Cut Flowers,” was given by Mrs. Buckhorn. “The Influence of Environment on Children in the Home” was given by Mrs. Coffin and the general discussion of the whole club on “Seeing Beauty in Nature,” concluded the program after which the meeting was turned over to the president. Mrs. Lee was elected Club reporter and Mrs. Coffin was elected alternate for a council meeting. There being no further business, the hostess served delicious refreshments after which the meeting adjourned to meet March 1st with Mrs. Buckhorn.—Reporter.

LaWard Notes

The farmers of this section are all very busy trying to get their land in shape during the pretty weather.

Gordon Stayton, who works at the Star Filling Station in Edna, spent a few days in Houston the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Davis spent the week end in Houston.

The Francitas school junior boys baseball team came over Friday afternoon for a game with the LaWard junior boys. The game resulted in a victory for LaWard by the score of 14 to 6. We are proud of our little boys and hope they will keep up their good playing.

Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Coffin were Houston visitors Saturday.

W. G. Gayle went down to Carancahua Monday to see about the equipment he has there. He expects to return to work soon.

Mrs. W. G. Gayle was an Edna visitor Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Farquhar and family and Miss Bertie Mae Harper spent the week end in Chapel Hill.

Miss Stella Stayton spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Moody in Red Bluff.

A. J. Stayton was in Palacios for dental work Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Harper visited Palacios one day last week, going over for some dental work.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob McFeron spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff.

Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney were supper guests in the A. J. Stayton home Sunday.

Mr. W. G. Gayle was a Palacios visitor Friday.

Mr. White moved his family over last week. We wish them success in their new home.

The members of the senior class of the LaWard school have ordered their class rings. The class is composed of the following Misses Mary Collins, Sue Boys [Boyd], Stella Stayton, Kathryn Hess and Tommy Stapp.

Master Milton Stayton spent Friday night with R. T. Baker.

(Too late last week)

The LaWard Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. B. A. Buckrum on March 1st, 1932, with the following ladies being present: Mesdames I. W. Sears, J. W. Lee, B. A. Buckrum, H. Parker, F. Thomas, J. R. Myrick. There was also one new member present, Mrs. W. J. Matthews.

Miss Bryant, the home demonstration agent, met with us and we filled out our canning cards. Miss Bryant also gave a talk on Adequate Diet for the family. The meeting was then turned over to the hostess and delicious refreshments were served.

The meeting adjourned to meet on March 15th with Mrs. I. W. Sears.—Reporter.

LaWard Items

The farmers of this section are just about through preparing the land for planting.

The snow that fell a week or so ago was very hard on the fruit, gardens and truck crops.

Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney, and Mr. Dozier and Miss Stella Stayton were visitors to Victoria Sunday.

Mrs. W. B. Gayle spent the week end in Edna with relatives.

W. G. Gayle has returned to his work on the Hug the Coast Highway. His friends hope the weather will remain good so that he might finish up.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton and family, Mrs. W. G. Gayle and Miss Opal Parr of Edna were guests at the home of C. C. McHaney one night last week.

A. J. Stayton was an Edna visitor Monday.

The Francitas baseball boys and Volleyball girls came over to LaWard one day last week to play, with the local school teams. Our teams won in each contest.

Mrs. Tom Holstein and Mrs. Dahlstrom were San Antonio visitors Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney and Mr. Dozier and Miss Stella Stayton visited Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Stayton in Boling Saturday and Sunday.

Coke McHaney and Houston James, Misses Thelma Farquhar and Bertie Harper attended the Show in Edna Saturday night.

Mr. H. S. White of Edna was in LaWard one day last week on business.

The many friends of Mr. Tom Hobson were greatly grieved to learn of his death. Mr. Hobson and wife resided in this section for many years where he operated a grocery store. Later they moved to LaWard where he had charge of the gin. From LaWard the family moved to Francitas, where they resided until his health began to fail, when he moved to Edna. He made many friends in this section and his death is mourned by many of our people. The writer extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

LaWard Items

There has been quite a bit of rain around LaWard, but so far LaWard has failed to get any rain scarcely at all. Crops are suffering for rain, especially the corn.

Roy Williams of Troupe is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Pete Flowers.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson went to Houston Friday to take their little son for medical treatment.

Marshall Thomas of Edna was transacting business here Thursday.

Our drug store changed hands last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis of Houston taking charge Friday. We are glad to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis to our town. Mr. and Mrs. Restelle, former owners, moved to Houston Friday to reside.

Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Haise and children of Palacios were guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Burditt Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Wash Lee were visitors to Edna Sunday.

Travis Walker and friend, Leslie Martin, of Houston, visited his father, C. K. Walker, the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Wright and children left Wednesday for Palacios to make their home. We regret losing this estimable family from our midst, but with them well in their new location.

Messrs. Frank Restelle and Jimmy? Sternberg went to Houston on business Wednesday.

Emmett Cole, made a business trip to Houston Friday.

Messrs. C. A. McFeron and Covey Walker were in Ganado Monday.

T. J. Baxter was shaking hands with friends here Saturday.

Mr. Petty has returned from Wichita Falls with his family. We are glad to have them move to our town to reside.

Misses Thelma Farquhar and Kathryn Hess and Mrs. Jarvis were Edna visitors Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Thuman of Texana were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beken Sunday.

The LaWard All-Sports met the Carancahua baseball team on the latter’s diamond Sunday. The score was 8 to 4 in favor of LaWard.

Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Ingram of Beeville were here Sunday visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Cole.

Lawrence Bunting? of Caddo was here Sunday.

Messrs. L. Ward and L. D. Flowers were business visitors to Victoria Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Cole were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Erin Coyle at Port Lavaca Sunday.

Mr. Winfield of Olivia and Miss Ruth Winfield of Galveston were here Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt were Palacios visitors Monday.

The LaWard All-Sports met the Hillje baseball team at Hillje Sunday. The score was 5 to 6 in favor of LaWard. The All-Sports will play the Danevang team at Edna Sunday.

Miss Edna Collins and sister, from Oil City, La., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Collins.

Quite a number from here attended the celebration at Edna Saturday. All report a nice time.

Mr. and Mrs. Wash Lee spent Sunday with his parents at Sweet Home.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Greenawalt of Sugarland were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gaines Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Compton and children of Houston were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. McFeron.

Miss Ellen Mays of Lolita was visiting relatives in LaWard a few days last week.

Charbon continues to rage in our neighborhood. Several have lost valuable milch-cows and others are losing mules and horses. We hope this disease will soon run its course.

Messrs. Jack and Walter Green of Hawkins visited Mr. and Mrs. Pete Flowers Sunday.

LaWard was well represented at Port Alto on the 4th.

L. A. Bonnot was a business visitor to Edna Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Cole and Miss Mattie Schandler of Bastrop were week end visitors of Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Cole.

Mr. L. Ward returned from San Antonio Friday where he spent Thanksgiving.

Mr. and Mrs. Wash Lee spent Sunday in Edna visiting relatives.

Mrs. W. M. McCall was called to Cameron Friday by the serious illness of her mother.

The following friends and relatives were visitors in the B. H. Dulany home the past week; Mr. and Mrs. Griffin, Mr. Ed Montgomery, Mr. M. E. Dulany and Rev. J. C. Harvel of Montgomery.

A party composed of Mr. Russell Revels and Misses Rachael Lawrence and Gladys Harper spent Thanksgiving and the week end in the Valley. They report a very pleasant trip.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Cannerday and daughter of Edna spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Baker.

Mr. Tom Holstein and Mr. and Mrs. Covey Walker and daughter, Nell, were Houston visitors last week.

Several cases of flu are reported in this community, but those who have suffered from it are doing nicely.

Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Dahlstrom and Mrs. M. L. Pearce were shopping in Edna Tuesday.

Messrs W. C. Moody and J. D. Walker of the Red Bluff section were visiting with friends here Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton were called to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. McHaney at Midway Tuesday to attend the bedside of their son, Gordon, who was quite ill. We are glad to say the young man is doing nicely at this writing.

We are glad to report that Mrs. W. G. Gayle is able to be up after a siege of flu.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Slaughter and Mrs. Frank Laughter were business visitors to Port Lavaca Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle visited kindred in Port Lavaca Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Bowers and Mrs. A. J. Stayton visited in the Geo. McHaney home at Midway Friday.

We are glad to state that Mrs. A. J. Bonnot, who has been quite ill with flu is not improving.

Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Shannon spent the week end with kindred at Cedar Lane.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt were visitors in the A. J. Stayton home Saturday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle and children of Edna were dinner guests in the I. M. Bowers home Sunday.

Mrs. Dallas Brown and daughter, Mrs. Ervin LaBauve and children of Edna were dinner guests in the I. M. Bowers home Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney and Gordon Stayton of Midway and Mr. and Mrs. A. Lowrance of Wharton were dinner guests in the A. J. Stayton home Sunday.

The many friends in this section of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Slaughter of Needville were grieved when the message reached them that their little daughter had passed away. Relatives went down and accompanied the remains to Edna where they were buried Monday. The writer extends heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

The LaWard P. T. A. met Thursday afternoon, Feb. 13th, at the school house. Ten members and one visitor were present. Mr. Shanon’s talk on “New Educational Methods” was enjoyed by all present.

Clyde McCoy, who is attending school in Victoria was here over the week end visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. McCoy.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen Burditt and children were Port Lavaca visitors Sunday afternoon.

The banquet and dance sponsored by the P. T. A. Friday night and given in honor of the LaWard football team proved to be a great success. A large crowd attended and all present report a most delightful time.

Mr. L. D. Flowers has returned home from Uvalde where he spent several weeks.

We are enjoying these days of sunshine after several weeks of bad weather.

Farmers in this section have been very busy lately planting their corn and cotton. Most all the farmers have their crops planted and corn is up to a good stand and growing pretty. All are wishing for a good rain.

We are glad to state that all of those who have had the flu are now about to be up and about.

Mrs. W. G. Gayle and Messrs. A. J. Stayton and W. B. Gayle were Edna visitors the first of last week.

J. J. Hunt was shopping in Edna last Thursday.

Mr. Cal Atkinson of Corpus Christi spent the week end in the W. G. Gayle home.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellie Gayle and son, Billie, of Houston, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle Saturday night. From here they went to Palacios to visit relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Stayton of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and children were dinner guests in the A. J. Stayton home Sunday.

Mrs. W. B. Gayle and children are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson in Blessing.

The farmers are busy poisoning cotton for leaf worms.

Mrs. R. P. Foreman of Louisiana came in the first of the week to visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrell.

Mrs. J. J. Hunt and son and Brother Burchard were Palacios visitors last Tuesday.

Mrs. A. Slaughter has returned home from Beeville where she spent a month with her parents.

Quite a number from LaWard attended the play at the Deutschburg school house Thursday night.

Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Bowers and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Slaughter were shopping in Ganado Friday.

Evelyn Parker, who has been visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Sears, has gone to Houston to visit her mother, Mrs. Henry Parker.

Mrs. A. D. Thompson and daughter, Miss Dorothy, of Francitas, were visiting in the A. J. Stayton home Saturday evening.

Milton Stayton has gone to Houston to accept a job with the Double Dip Co. His brother, Gordon, also holds a position with this concern.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter were visitors in the Frank Slaughter home Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Slaughter were dinner guests in the B. H. Dulany home Sunday.

Mrs. L. Lawrence of Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stayton and family of Bay City, Mrs. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and children and Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Sears were visitors in the A. J. Stayton home Sunday evening.

Miss Betty Jo Hilton spent the week end with Opal Sears.

Mrs. A. J. Bolling and sons, Laval and Teencie, of Houston were visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle Friday.

Mr. J. W. Bowers of Blessing spent the week end with is son, Mr. I. M. Bowers. From here he went to Edna to visit his daughter, Mrs. Dallas Brown.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McFeron and children and Mr. and Mrs. Rob McFeron spent Sunday in Galveston.

Mr. and Mrs. L. W. McCall and son Billie of New Gulf spent the week end here with his parents.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Peters were called to El Campo Saturday by the death of a cousin of Mrs. Peters, an auto wreck being the cause of the death.

Mr. and Mrs. H. J. De Atley and children spent Sunday with his mother at Refugio.

Mr. George Pearce was a business visitor to Ganado Saturday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wright and children of San Antonio came in Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. J. C. White.

Mrs. L. L. Harrell is visiting relatives at Bunkie, La.

Mr. and Mrs. August Rickaway of Bay City were visitors here Saturday.

Mrs. W. G. Gayle and son, W. B., were shopping in Edna Monday.

The continued showers are playing havoc with the cotton crop and hay making in this section.

Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Walker were Palacios visitors Saturday.

Miss Gladys Harper left Thursday for Shreveport, La., to be at the bedside of her sister, Miss Johnnie Lee, who had the misfortune of getting badly burned by the explosion of some gasoline with which she was cleaning clothes. Miss Johnnie Lee has numerous friends here, who will regret to learn of her sad misfortune, and all wish for her a speedy and complete recovery.

Homer Brown of Victoria spent the week end here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Brown.

Mrs. Tex Gilmore and daughter, Miss Elma, of Lolita spent Sunday here with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Compton.

Harold Tait left Saturday for College Station to attend A. & M. College this term. We extend to Harold best wishes and hope for him lots of success in his first year at college.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and sons were Bay City visitors Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Leone Horne and little daughter, Norma Gene, of Red Bluff spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Burnelle Horne.

Messrs. T. L. Shannon and Jack Compton were Edna visitors Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. De Atly and children spent Sunday with relatives at Lake Placedo.

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. McFeron and children spent the week end in Houston.

L. W. McCall of New Gulf was here over the week end visiting relatives and friends.

Mrs. W. M. McCall is spending a few days at New Gulf this week.

The heavy rains that have visited this section the past week or so have given the haymakers and farmers the blues.

Mrs. Will Forrest of Houston visited her father, Mr. H. N. Burditt, and other relatives and friends here the first of the week.

The writer is glad to state that Mesdames J. J. Hunt and A. J. Stayton, who have been on the sick list the past week, suffering from flu, are now able to be out again.

Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Bowers were visitors to Bay City Tuesday of last week.

W. B. Gayle was a business visitor to Port Lavaca and Victoria last Thursday.

Fishing has been the order of the day for several in this section of late.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle visited Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt Thursday evening.

Several from LaWard attended the football game in Victoria Friday night.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and W. B. Gayle visited Bay City Saturday. While there, W. B. bought a nice Chevrolet car.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle and Mr. and Mrs. W. C Moody and sons, Bernard and Alvin, were visitors in the A. G. Stayton home Sunday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Slaughter were visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Almon Slaughter Saturday.

Robert Claybrook was a business visitor to Edna Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle spent the week end in Blessing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson.

Almon Slaughter went to Beeville Saturday where he expected to spend a few days.

Mr. and Mrs. L. Ward returned last week from Fort Worth and Dallas where they went on business. They also attended the Centennial while at Dallas.

Mrs. Sparksman and children of Lake Placedo spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. De Atley.

Mr. and Mrs. Burchard and sons spent the week end at Palacios visiting their son, Maurice.

Mrs. Kirby Hayes of Palacios spent a few days there the past week with her father, Mr. H. N. Burditt.

Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Walker and sister, Miss Lillie Walker, were called to the bedside of their brother at Galveston Sunday by a message announcing that he was seriously ill.

Mr. and Mrs. T. Shannon have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood in the death of her father, Mr. Walker of Bay City, who died in a Houston hospital Saturday. Interment was made in the Bay City Cemetery Monday. Those from here attending the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Sears and daughter, Opal, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and Mesdames B. A. Burckhorn, Tom Holstein, J. H. De Atley, Carrol Baker, Burnelle Horne, C. A. McFeron and Misses Rachael Lawrence and Gladys Harper and Coach Compton.

Miss Gladys Harper spent the week end with Palacios friends.

Coach and Mrs. Germer of Port Lavaca visited friends here briefly Sunday afternoon.

J. L. McCoy made a business trip to Bunkie, La., last week.

Mesdames Covey Walker and Floyd Goodman were El Campo visitors Tuesday.

We are glad to have Miss Lawrence, a member of our school faculty back at school after several weeks of absence.

We understand that Mr. and Mrs. L. J. McCoy have sold their home here and are preparing to move to Natchez, La., right away. We wish them much success in their new home.

We are glad to report Mrs. W. I. Sears much better after a siege of malarial fever.

Mrs. Alina Parker of Houston visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sears, the past week.

We are sorry to report Carolyn Lee Burditt, ill. Mrs. Burditt left with her Monday for Houston to consult a physician. We hope the little lady will soon be o. k.

The rainy weather seems to be taking the day. If fact so regular have the rains fallen that it is likely residents in this section would be disappointed it if didn’t rain for a few days.

Mrs. B. B. Buckhorn and babe, Mr. J. J. Hunt and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton tried the bad roads to Ganado last Wednesday.

Mr. H. N. Burditt, who spent a few days in Houston last week with his daughters, Mesdames Will Forrest and H. C. Hayes, who have been ill, returned home last week. He reports the sick are improved which will be good news to their many friends here.

Burnelle Horne was looking after business matters in Edna Saturday and visiting his mother, Mrs. Henry Horne, and grandmother, Mrs. N. W. Horne, who have been ill. Their host of friends will be glad to know that they are improving.


Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton and children visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Burnelle Horne Friday evening.

It seems that most all the LaWard people went to Edna Saturday, and we think they all found it lots of fun to push on their way and we rather they would not ask us how rough the roads were, as you were doing well to stay in the car and it closed.

Mrs. Earl Burchard and Windle, were called to Houston Sunday to be at the bedside of their mother who is quite ill at that place. The sick lady has many friends here who hope her condition will improve soon.

The writer is sorry to state that Mrs. Hanley Sears is ill with flu at this writing.

Mr. Johnnie White, who has been working at Palacios, spent Sunday here with homefolks.

Mrs. C. A. McFeron and Miss Gladys Harper were Palacios visitors Saturday afternoon.

Those from here attending the funeral of Mr. J. P. Robertson of Edna at the Lolita Cemetery Sunday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Farquhar and children, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. McCall, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Peters, Mrs. Robert Claybrook, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Baker, Mesdames B. H. Horne, W. A. and C. A. McFeron and Covey Walker and Miss Rachael Lawrence, Russel Revels and Chester Hayes.

A large number from here and those who united with the Baptist Church for baptism attended church and Baptismal services at the Edna Baptist Church Sunday night. It was a great pleasure to us to meet with Bro. Barrett again and have the privilege of attending another service conducted by him We also want to thank Bro. Barrett and the congregation Sunday for the donation to our church. May God’s richest blessings be yours is the wish of our people. Bro. Barrett and family made many friends while they were with us all of whom wish them Godspeed on their way.

Bro. Hood of Lolita preached for us Sunday night.

The LaWard P. T. A. met Thursday afternoon, April 15th, 1927. Several members enjoyed the following program:

The Postage Stamp—Brother Barrett. Brother Barrett compared a successful person with a postage stamp, using this outline: First, one carries a load much heavier than one’s self; second, one must be licked before he does its work, and third, one sticks to the job after being licked.

Several of the young people of LaWard attended the school closing program at Red Bluff last Tuesday night.

Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Horne and Miss Klanst? Visited in the A. J. Stayton home last Tuesday night.

Mr. T. L. Shannon and Carolos D. Bonnot, Milton Stayton, Clarence McFeron and F. H. Goodman were visitors at San Marcos last Wednesday. White there they visited with Mr. Jack Compton who is attending college in that city. They report a fine trip.

This section was visited by a nice little rain last week. However, not enough rain fell to help the farmers in their planting.

Mrs. Gernie Spencer of Louise visited with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton for a few hours Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Bowers of Blessing were looking over their farm in this section Saturday.

Mrs. Nelse Brown of Palacios visited with her sister, Mrs. W. G. Gayle, Friday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Slaughter visited kindred in Port Lavaca Sunday.

Mrs. L. Duffy and children of Vanderbilt visited in the home of their father-in-law, Mr. B. H. Dulany Friday night. From here they went with Mr. and Mrs. Dulany to Tomball to visit kindred.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Slaughter and children were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Slaughter Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle spent Sunday with their son, W. B. Gayle and family at Red Bluff.

The rain that visited this section Friday was of much benefit to everyone, the farmers in particular.

Mr. and Mrs. Al. Albnus of Houston were here the first of last week, visiting kindred and fishing.

Mr. Whitmire of Ganado was looking after business matters in this section last Wednesday.

Mrs. J. J. Hunt and son, Darrel, left the first of last week for Louisiana to visit kindred for a few days.

Miss Dorothy Thompson of Conroe was visiting in the A. J. Stayton home last Thursday. She reported that her father, Mr. A. D. Thompson, was ill, which his many friends will regret to learn.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Joines of Houston passed through this section the last week end enroute to Midway to visit his cousin, Mrs. George McHaney. While there they enjoyed a fishing trip.

Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Hayes visited friends in Palacios Thursday.

We are sorry to state that Mr. A. J. Peters is ill at this writing. We join his many other friends in the hope that his condition will soon improve.

Tillman Hunt was bidding friends good bye Saturday as he was leaving for College Station Sunday to enter A. & M. College. Tillman’s many friends wish him well in his school work.

Milton Stayton is visiting his brother, Gordon, in Houston at this writing.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stayton and children of Bay City and Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney of Midway were supper guests in the A. J. Stayton home Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Slaughter and A. J. Stayton were business visitors to Ganado Monday.

Messrs. H. N. Burditt and J. W. Bowers spent the week end in Lockhart with kindred.

We are glad to state that Mr. A. J. Peters, who has been quite ill, is now able to set up. This sounds good to him many friends, all of whom are hoping that he will soon regain his wonted health soon.

LaWard News Items

Farmers in this section are wishing for a good rain. Crops have been cleaned out and they, as well as the grass on the ranges, are beginning to need rain.

Several farmers of the LaWard section have been enjoying fishing trips during the hot weather, and we have heard they have been catching plenty of fish.

We are glad to be able to state that Mrs. Clarence McFeron, who has been quite ill with measles, is improving.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt were called to Louisiana last week to be at the bedside of Mr. Hunt’s father who is quite ill.

Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney and little son, George Jr., and Miss Dorothy Thompson were supper guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Burnelle Horne Saturday night.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Scott enjoyed supper and bathing at the Bay Saturday evening.

Mr. J. O. Lawrence of Wharton, Miss Dorothy Thompson of Conroe and Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Stayton and son, Jr., were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. George McHaney at Midway Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gayle and children of Red Bluff were guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gayle Sunday.

Mrs. A. J. Peters and son, Terry Peters, attended the funeral of Mrs. Peters’ brother at El Campo Saturday. Mrs. Peters’ many friends sympathize with her in her bereavement.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hunt and sons, Wallace and Darrell, were called to Bunkie, La., Friday by the serious illness of Mr. Hunt’s father. We trust that they found the sick gentleman’s condition improved upon their arrival.

Rev. Frank Andrews of Tyler preached for us Saturday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Travis Walker and babe of Houston visited Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Walker over the week end.

Mrs. L. W. McCall and son, Billie, spent the last week end here with Mr. and Mrs. W. M. McCall.

We are glad to report Mrs. C. W. McFeron very much improved after a siege of measles and an attack of appendicitis.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cherry of Edna visited Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Baker here last Sunday.

News from the bedside of Mrs. Kirby Hayes, who is under medical treatment in Houston, is quite favorable, we are glad to be able to report.
