El Campo – Sophie Mary Nagel Goppert, 97, of El Campo died Friday, Dec. 8, 1995. She was born July 4, 1898, in Cordele to the late Albert H. and Emelia Braun Nagel. She was a retired clerk for Wendell Howe. She was a member of Eastern Star and Baptist Temple. Survivors: son, retired U. S. Air Force Colonel J. G. Goppert of Palos Verdes, Calif.; sister, Johanna Goppert of Round Rock; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband, Earl Curtis Goppert. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at Baptist Temple in Edna, the Rev. J. A. Munson officiating. Lolita – Jonathan Wayne Goss, 18, of Lolita, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999. He was born June 30, 1981, in Port Lavaca, to Linda Duenow Goss of Lolita and the late Robert Goss. He was a student at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Guanaco. He was a member of Cobra Band, the golf team, basketball team, he was Band Beau and was voted “Most Handsome.” Survivors: mother; and sisters, Elene Goss of Lolita, JoLynn Hungerford of Corpus Christie and Amber Melton of Chico, Calif. Preceded in death by: father; and grandparents, Edwin and Mildred “Kitten” Duenow and James and Bessie Goss. Services will be 3 p. m. today at St. John Bosco Catholic Church of Vanderbilt, the Revs. Bruce Adamson, Jim Deaconson, Jack Hutson and Benton Thurmond officiating. Edna – Funeral services for William Newton Grafius Jr., 65, of Corpus Christi will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday from the Slavik Chapel with the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. Burial will be in Edna Cemetery under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Dave Collins, Gene Jones, Dick Whitrow, H. L. Krenzler, William Lee Asbeck and Kelly Kahanek. Mr. Grafius was born Aug. 31, 1909 at Houston. He died Monday in Corpus Christi. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Grafius of Corpus Christi, and one brother, Frank Grafius of Houston.

Edna – Gertrude “Nannie” Graham, 94, of Edna, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997. She was born Nov. 18, 1902, in Oakville to the late James Allen and Kitty Wilson Jones. She was the former owner of the Grand Motel in Edna for 40 years, was a past worthy matron of Eastern Star in Edna and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors: daughter, Juanita Gertrude Greig of Edna; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by: parents; husband, Judson Robert “Bob” Graham; sister, Lydia Coker; and brothers, Henry Jones and Lem Jones. Services will be at 2 p. m. today at First Baptist Church in Edna, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating. Graveside services will be at Memory Gardens of Edna under the auspices of the Eastern Star. Eleanor Asbeck Grafius, 94, of Edna, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2007. She was born May 23, 1912, in Manvel, to the late Louis N. Asbeck and Lillie Hazawood Asbeck. Eleanor is survived by: her nephew, William L. Asbeck and wife, Wanda, of Edna; great-nephews, Donald L. Asbeck of Edna and Kenny Vuillemin and wife, Linda, of Victoria; and great-niece, Ann Marie Asbeck of Edna. She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, William N. Grafius; sisters, Isabel Lozeson and Alma Krenzler; brothers, Steve, Robert and Carlie Asbeck. Edna – Funeral services for Judson Robert Graham, 78, owner of the Grand Motel here, will be held at 2 p. m. Monday from the Jackson County Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Edna Memory Gardens under direction of the Jackson County Funeral Service. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Graham was born Sept. 9, 1898, at Nacogdoches, and lived in Houston before coming to Edna 25 years ago. He was a Baptist and a veteran of World War II, and past commander of American Legion Post 212. He died Saturday in a Victoria hospital. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Graham and a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Greig, both of Edna; a sister, Mrs. Vertna Schultz of Houston; a brother, M. C. Graham of Houston; four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Mrs. Marion Graham, a former well known and highly esteemed resident of Jackson County, passed away Saturday, January 10th, 1948, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Isaacson in El Campo, after an illness of less than three weeks duration. Few, if any of Mrs. Graham’s Edna and Jackson County friends knew of her illness and the news of her death was a shock to them and brought grief to many hearts. The remains were brought to Edna Tuesday afternoon, and the funeral service was held at the Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church at 3:00, being conducted by Rev. Elmer Wood, pastor of the El Campo Presbyterian Church. Mrs. N. A. Stuart sang two of Mrs. Graham’s favorite songs, “One Sweetly Solemn Thought” and “The Lord’s Prayer” by Malotte, accompanied by Mrs. T. J. Bolling at the organ. Interment was made at the Edna cemetery by the side of her husband, who passed away in July 1941. The pallbearers were: Messrs. L. E. Wagstaff, C. B. Trousdale, Charles Breckel, Dick Cospter, Earl Goppert, and Hubert Ratliff. Jennie Dunball Smith was born at Appleton, Ohio, on April 10, 1865, the daughter of Nathan and Mehitable Myers Smith. Shortly after the Civil War the family moved westward, first to Illinois, then Iowa, and finally to Petersburg, Nebraska, where they resided several years. Here she attended the public school of Petersburg and Albion and later normal school, receiving a certificate to teach, becoming one of the pioneer teachers in that section of the state. On March 23, 1885, she was united in marriage to Marion W. Graham at Neligh, Neb., where they resided continuously except for one year’s residence in Illinois and one year at Edna, Texas until 1928, when they moved to a farm southwest of Edna to make their home. In 1935 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary to holding open house for their neighbors and friends. In 1941 they observed their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary quietly with the members of their immediate family. Mr. Graham passed away the following July, but Mrs. Graham remained on the farm until October, 1946 when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Isaacson and Mr. Isaacson, in El Campo. After an illness of less than three weeks she passed away January 10, 1948. Mrs. Graham was active in club work, having been one of the charter members of the Reviewer’s Club in Neligh, Nebraska, and the organizer and first president of the Home Demonstration Club of the Live Oak and Casa Branea communities, Jackson County. She was also active in fraternal organizations, beign a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps, Degree of Honor, and Daughters of Veterans. She held eight different state offices in the W. R. C., and was elected delegate-at-large to the National Convention and was made National Committeewoman on two separate occasions. She was a member of the Congregational Church at Neligh, and was interested in the various ____ and the activities of the command. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A. J. Isaacson, one grandson, Robert E. Muhm, and two step-grandchildren, Barbara Isaacson and James Isaacson, all of El Campo; and one brother, Henry P. Smith of Clearwater, Nebraska. Two sisters, Mrs. Ella Ferguson of Neligh, and Mrs. Mary Van Doren of Marksan, Wisconsin, preceded her in death the latter having passes away December 19, 1947. To Mrs. Isaacson and other relatives, the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy in their time of great sorrow.

Evelyn Carole Grahmann, 70, of Edna, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011. She was born Jan. 14, 1941 to the late George and Mary Otto. She was a full time homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Clarence; her two children, Lorne Mock of Schellsburg, Pa., and Travis Lee Grahmann of Edna; her two sisters, Ruth McCreary of New Paris, Pa., and Diann Willey of Bedford, Pa.; and her grandchildren, Autumn Grahmann, Levi, Luke and Kirsten Mock. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Lee Mock; her sisters, Jean Hann, Wilma Otto, and Mary Otto; and brothers, Russell and Harry Otto. Visitation was Dec. 8, with a Rosary recited 7 p.m. at the Slavik Funeral Home, in Edna. A Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. Dec. 9 with the funeral service at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. John Peters and Rev. Edna – Goe Taylor Grassmuck, 71, of Edna, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999. She was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Edna, to Margaret Gerald Taylor of Edna and the late Odis George Taylor. She was a retired secretary at Randolph Air Force Base. Survivors: mother. Graveside services will be 5 p. m. today at Memory Gardens of Edna with W. F. Gerald officiating. Funeral services for Eugene W. Gray, 78, were held from Slavik’s Chapel Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. I. E. Walker officiating. Interment was in the Edna Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Gray, well-known Jackson County rancher, died in Austin on Sept. 12, after an illness of several years. He was born August 11, 1881 in Cooper, Texas, and had been a resident of this county since 1937. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha Hooten Gray of Fredericksburg; a son, Col. Eugene W. Gray Jr. of Washington D. C.; and three daughters, Mrs. Roger Ray of Pharr, Mrs. F. W. Lemburg of Austin and Mrs. C. C. Phillips of Mission. He also leaves eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Slavik Chapel for Mrs. Martha Susan Gray, 83, a former Jackson County resident and grandmother of Mrs. Wayne Myers of Edna. Rev. J. W. Griffin and Rev. I. E. Walker officiated. Interment was in Edna Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Dr. Bud Lee, Harrison Stafford, Pete Layden, Dr. C. M. Dugger, David Whitlow and W. C. Stevens. Mrs. Gray was born Dec. 14, 1879 in Cooper. She and her late husband, a well-known rancher, lived in this county from 1917 to 1927 and again from 1937 until 1957. A member of the Methodist Church, she passed away in Fredericksburg on Dec. 15, following a long illness. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. C. C. Phillips of Mission, Mrs. F. W. Lindberg Jr. of Austin, and Mrs. Roger Ray of Brownsville; a son, Dr. Eugene W. Gray of Nurnberg, Germany; five brothers, Richard Hooten of Perrin, Ray Hooten of Mineral Wells, Smith Hooten of Itasca, Ezzell Hooten of Dallas, and Even Hooten of Hermit, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Wright of Weatherford and Mrs. Sye Montgomery of Haskell; also eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Lolita – A. C. Green has “gone fishing.” A. C. Green passed away on Feb. 19, 2009 at Welford Hall Hospital, Lackland AFB in San Antonio. He was born Almuth Cornelius Green on July 30, 1921, in Vanderbilt, to Thad Monroe Green and Mary Lee Hudson Green. A. C. was one of nine children of which Leona Burney of Marble Falls is the sole surviving member. A. C. was preceded in death by his brothers, Rueben, Harold, James and Otto; and sisters, Viola Stefka, Velma Dowdy and Verda Schlinke. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jane Green, formerly of Topeka. They have three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Bobbie Green of Port Lavaca. Cornell and Patricia Green of Yorktown, and Patrick and Lindy Green of Victoria. A. C. and Nancy have 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. A. C. graduated from Kingsville High School in 1939 while living with his sister Verda. He spent a year with the artillery in the Texas National Guard. He served with the army during World War II with the 103rd Regimental Combat Team of the 43rd Infantry Division. He saw extensive combat and participated in the savage fighting for the Liberation of Manila and in the brutal mountain fighting reducing the imposing Shimbu Line. After the battles in the Philippines, A. C. participated in the occupation of Japan. He separated from the Army in 1946. He earned the prestigious Combat Infantry’s Badge, two Bronze Stars, and numerous other awards and citations. He kept in contact with his foxhole buddy Ernie Head, visiting with him as recently as last week. A. C. started his oilfield career selling drilling mud for Zarsky Lumber yard in Vanderbilt. Over the next 25 years he built and sold reputation as a petroleum engineer and field superintendent specializing in shallow oil and gas production in the Golden Crescent. After retiring from the oilfield, A. C. turned his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing, into a successful career in the marine industry. He partnered with Ben Young owning the Sports Hub Sporting Goods Store on Lauren in the early ‘60s. He later became a partner and general manager for Power Cat Boats. It is white he was with Power Vat that he made what he considered his biggest contribution to the industry. A. C. was the first person to use a two-seat fresh water bass boat with a troll motor, make it unsinkable, and adapt it to salt-water fishing. He had great success with these boats fishing the flats in and around Port O’Connor and Matagorda Island. A. C. also owned Victoria Marine Sales on Main Street in Victoria until his second retirement. Funeral services will be held at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna, Texas at 10 a. m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 and interment will follow afterwards at Memory Gardens of Edna Cemetery. A reception will be held afterwards at A. C.’s grandson’s house on County Club Road. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Floyd Parrett Jr. of Port Aransas, Thomas Parrett of Houston, Gabriel Green of Yorktown, Terrence Michael Green of Edna; and nephews, Larry and Michael Green of Seadrift. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America to help with our veterans in need. A. C. was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband to Nancy for 68 years having married in September of 1940. He will be missed by all. Dad has “gone fishing” one last time. All that knew him are confident that he had a FULL STRINGER AND THEY ARE ALL KEEPERS. Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. 361-782-2221.
