In the death of Miss Bertha Kaapke, which occurred Saturday, July 2nd, just before the noon hour, Edna lost one of her most beloved and highly esteemed ladies, and Jackson County and South Texas a prominent and pioneer citizen. The passing of this good woman was not a surprise nor a shock to her relatives and friends for she had been ill for many months, and for the past several weeks her condition was such that it was evident that the end was near—her life span having extended far beyond the allotted three score years and ten. Yet her passing caused sorrow and grief to many. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock at the Horton home, where deceased had resided for more than sixty-five years, and where a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the deceased. The service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. John J. Marse, of the Presbyterian Church. After the service the remains were laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery beside those of the other members of her family who had gone before. She was the last surviving member of a pioneer South Texas family. Pallbearers were: Messrs. George Horton, Billie Power, Garrett Menefee, Walter Howle, Tom Callaway, and Albert Egg, Jr. Miss Kaapke was born in Indianola, Calhoun County, April 22nd, 1857 hence was in her 93rd year. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Charles Albert and Charlotte Anna Kaapke, prominent and pioneer residents of that section. Shortly after the 1875 tropical hurricane at Indianola, she, with the other members of her family, moved to Texana, then the county seat of Jackson County. In the year of 1883 she moved to the then new town of Edna, and she continued to make Edna her home until her death. She made her home with her brother-in-law and sister, the late Mr. and Mrs. George F. Horton. After the death of Mr. and Mrs. Horton she continued to live in the old home place. She was well known to and highly esteemed by many of our people, more especially the members of the pioneer families of this section. In the year of 1886, Miss Kaapke united with the Edna Presbyterian Church, and down through the years she was ever faithful to the teachings of that church. In the years before her health began to fall she was a regular attendant at all the services of the church and was an active and faithful worker in the Sunday School. Being deprived of the privilege of taking an active part in the work of the church and Sunday school did not cause her to lost interest in the work of the church, and even to the very last her contributions to the support of her church were generous and regular, and in her passing the church has lost a faithful member. Miss Kaapke was an aunt of the members of the Egg and Horton families, and in addition to these, she is also survived by several nieces and nephews. To the bereaved ones, the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

Mary Lee (Bollom) Kallus, lovingly known as “Momo” to her grandchildren, passed away on January 25, 2026, at the age of 83. A lifelong resident of the El Campo and Edna communities, she leaves behind a legacy of devotion to family, faith, and the simple joys of country life. Born to Albina Kainer Bollom and Adolph William Bollom of El Campo, Texas, Mary Lee grew up alongside her two sisters, Evelyn Chaka and Lillian Konarik. She attended St. Philip’s Catholic School and graduated from El Campo High School. In her younger years, she and her friends enjoyed gathering for evenings of polka dancing—where she would eventually meet the love of her life, Johnny Joseph Kallus of Edna. A woman of strong faith, Mary Lee was a devoted member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She and Johnny were also longtime members of a super club that met regularly for more than 50 years, forming cherished friendships that became like family. Above all, Mary Lee was a loving and caring mother to her three children: David John Kallus, Patricia Ann Kallus, and Dennis Joseph Kallus. Relatives and old friends were made sad Monday when news came from San Angelo that Mr. Eustace (Buck) Kleas, a native of Edna had passed away. He had not enjoyed the best of health for the past few years, yet few realized that his condition was serious, and the news of his death came as a shock. The remains reached Edna Tuesday morning, and that afternoon at 3:00 o’clock the funeral service was held at the Slavik Funeral Home, where a large number gathered to pay their last tribute of love and respect to their long time friend and fellow citizen. The service was conducted by Arden H. Lawrence, minister of the Edna Church of Christ, after which the body was interred in the Edna Cemetery where rest the remains of other members of the family. The floral offering was profuse and beautiful. Buck Kleas, who was born in Edna 67 years ago, was a member of one of Jackson County’s pioneer and most prominent families, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. Kleas, esteemed early day Edna citizens. He spent practically his whole life in Edna. He moved from Edna to Ganado a few years ago where he made his home with his sister, Mrs. E. R. York. A few years ago he moved to West Texas, where he married and where he was living when he passed away. At one time he was road foreman for the late Commissioner W. J. Manley, and later he served the Edna precinct as constable for several years. He possessed a jovial disposition and made friends easily, and his passing brought sorrow to many hearts. He is survived by his wife [Ida Theresa Hollub Kleas]; a son, Virdery Kleas of Houston; one sister, Mrs. E. R. York of Ganado, and two brothers, Mr. Milam Kleas, now residing in Arkansas, and Mr. Phil Kleas of Wharton. To these the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.
