Eugene A. Kolar

September 28, 1922 - February 6, 2010

LA SALLE - Eugene A. Kolar, 87, of La Salle, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in Edna. He was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Fort Bend County, to the late John and Annie Kolar. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a resident of La Salle for 80 years and a longtime school board member for Industrial I.S.D. He was a farmer and a member of Elder Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Kolar; sons, Gary Kolar of Port Lavaca and Dennis Kolar of Victoria; sister, Leona Short of Corpus Christi; brother J.B. Kolar of La Salle; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Calvin Kolar; sister, Dorothy Mowrey.

Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Slavik Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Edna Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry Bozarth officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Lloyd Kulak, Brian Kolar, Michael Kolar, Wayne Gabrysch, Jerome Rozsypal, and Jerry Rozsypal.

Elizabeth J. Koop

Edna – Elizabeth Johns Koop, 70, of Edna died in a Victoria hospital Monday following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna. The Rev. Joe Webb, pastor of First Baptist Church of Edna, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of Edna.

Mrs. Koop was a native of Jackson County and was born Oct. 7, 1914. She was a retired housewife and member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include her mother, Ethel Hadley Johns of Edna; three daughters, Ethel Wake of Garland, Elizabeth Bayer of Floresville and Wanda Acheson of Bay City; two sons, Troy and “Obanion Quinn, both of Edna; 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Troy Lynn, Kerry, Robin and Eric Quinn, Bobby, Randy and Louis Wake and Larry Acheson Jr.

Ewald Koop

Ewald Koop, 85, of Edna passed away May 24, 2011. He was born June 12, 1925, at his home in Koop Settlement to the late George and Caroline Kleim Koop. He was a rancher and owned his own maintainer business.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Jacobs Koop; daughter, Kathy Land and husband, Kenneth; sons, Wayne Koop and wife, Linda, and Larry Koop and wife, Connie; sisters, Elnora Schubert, Natalie Crawford, Norris Fitzpatrick and Pearl Symmank; brothers, George Koop and James Koop Sr.; grandchildren, Mike and Dustin Smith, Chad Land, Amber Robles, Jamie Kinsfather, Ryan and Clayton Koop; and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice Roberson and Juanita Browning; brothers, Walter and Virgil Koop; and loving granddaughter, Stephanie Lambert.  Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Edna. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pastor Paul Kaiser officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna.  Pallbearers are Bobby Koop, Dee Fitzpatrick, Kenneth Koop, James Koop Jr., Timmy Jacobs and Rod Carlson.  Honorary pallbearers are his “Grandbabies”.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Stephanie Koop-Lambert Children’s Memorial Scholarship Fund, 700 N. Frank John Koop

Edna – Frank John Koop, 81, resident of Jackson County for 57 years, died at 4:45 p. m. Saturday in a local rest home.

Mr. Koop was born Oct. 14, 1884, in Seymour, Ind. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sybil Abel Koop, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Benard [Denard] and a granddaughter, Mrs. June Denard Lane.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. J. C. Henning officiating. Burial will be in Edna Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be C. F. Hoffman Jr., Francis Koop Jr., John Littlefield, John Koop Jr., Harold Koop Jr. and Ted Turner Jr., all grandchildren. Other grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Simons, Mrs. Enid Littlefield and Mrs. Lillian Wiede of Edna, Mrs. Delite Hoffman of Needville and Mrs. Elaine Turner of Corpus Christi; three sons, Francis, John, and Harold Koop of Edna; a sister, Mrs. Louise Knoernschild of Edna; a brother, Arnold Koop of Edna; 33 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Jewel Koop

Edna – Jewel Koop, 84, of Edna, died Monday, May 3, 1999.

She was born Jun. 28, 1914, in West Columbia, to the late Thomas and Clara Flournoy Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors: daughter, Patricia McFeron of Edna; sons, Wesley Koop and Lesley Koop, both of Edna, Francis Koop Jr. of Sugar Land and Dr. Tobey Koop of Cedar Park; sister, LaVada Weeks of Albin, Mich.; brother, Richard Williams of Edna; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Francis Koop and brothers, Woodrow Williams and Charles Williams.

Visitation will be held 7 to 9 p. m. tonight at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Rev. Robert LeBlanc officiating.

Burial will be at Memory Gardens.

Josephine Koop
Mrs. W. A. Koop, 56, Native of Jackson, Buried Here Today

Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday) at 4 p. m. for Mrs. Josephine Koop, 56, native of Jackson County, who passed away Tuesday in San Antonio after an illness of several years.

Rev. Reinhardt, a Lutheran minister of Victoria, was to conduct the services in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Edna, and interment was to be in the Edna Cemetery.

Pallbearers were named as Geo. Koop, Harold Koop, John Koop, Dickie Koop. Dickie Schuenemann, and J. R. Schuenemann, Ewald Koop and Francis Koop as alternates.

Mrs. Koop was born in Ganado March 28, 1903, and had lived in this county all her life.

She is survived by four children, Mrs. Emily Chase and Betty Unger of Edna; Evelyn Elsik of Dallas; and William D. Koop of Citronelle, Ala. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Schuenemann of Houston and Mrs. Irene Hyltin of Austin.

Slavik Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Ryan Anson Koop

June 12, 1982 – April 25, 2015

Ryan Anson Koop, 32, of Edna passed away April 25, 2015. He was born June 12, 1982 in Victoria to Larry and Connie Koop.

He is survived by his parents; brother, Clayton (Monica) Koop; grandmother, Dorothy Koop and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ewald Koop and Gene and Mattie "Boots" Miller; cousins, Riley Teal and Stephanie Lambert; good friend, Susan Budd; and his beloved dog, Scruffy.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Edna. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Kaiser officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna.

Pallbearers are Lee Hasdorff, Russell Vanecek, Dustin Smith, Cory Jacobs, Stacy Teal, Mike Smith, Chad Kinsfather and John Ross Jacobs.

Mrs. Sibyl Abel Koop

Edna – Funeral services for Mrs. Sibyl Abel Koop, 92, of Edna will be held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roland Schutz officiating.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers friends who desire may make donations to the St. Paul Lutheran building fund, or the Lutheran Hour, or the Edna Hospital.

Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens under direction of the Jackson County Funeral Service.

Mrs. Koop, was born Sept. 23, 1885 in Indiana, and came to this county in 1908. She was the widow of the late Frank Koop, and was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Delite Hoffman of Rosenberg, Elaine Turner of Corpus Christi, and Dorothy Simons, Enid Littlefield and Lillian Wiede, all of Edna; three sons, Francis and Harold of Edna and John of Oakhurst; a brother, Harold Abel of Granby, Colo.; and 33 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and two-great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Carolina Koop

Edna – Mrs. Carolina “Callie” Koop, 73, long-time resident of the Koop settlement near Edna, died Tuesday night in a Ganado hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Koop was born March 2, 1894 in Wharton County.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m., Friday at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Edna, with the Rev. James Neffendorf officiating. Burial will be in Edna Cemetery, under direction of Jackson County Funeral Service.

Survivors include five sons, Ewald and George, both of Edna; Walter of Houston, Virgil of Vanderbilt, and James E. Koop of Sheridan; six daughters, Mrs. Alice Roberson, Mrs. Elnora Schurbert, Mrs. Juanita Browning, all of Edna; Mrs. Natalia Crawford of Lake Charles, La., Mrs. Norris Fitzpatrick of Lolita, and Mrs. Pearl Symmank, of Auburn, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. Selma Abbinga of Friona, Texas, and Mrs. Hulda Braunschaldel, of New Braunfels; three brothers, Ernest Kleim of Corpus Christi, Bennie Kleim of El Campo, and Lehnardt Kleim of Houston; 37 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dickie Koop, Freddy Schneider, William Kleim, William Koop, John Koop, and Harold Koop.

Honorary pallbearers are Norman Born and James Dennard.

The family has requested that instead of the usual remembrances, contributions may be made to Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Walter Koop

Edna – Funeral services for Walter Dietrich Koop, 60, of Skidmore, a native of Jackson County, will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday from the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Edna.

Burial will be in Edna Cemetery under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Francis, Harold, John, and Arnold Koop, and Ed Spree and Freddie Snyder; honorary pallbearers will be Roy Roberson, Billy Koop and Gifford Roberson Jr.

Mr. Koop was born November 11, 1913 in Jackson County and lived here until 1954. He had been maintenance superintendent for Phillps Petroleum Co. since 1954, and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Beeville.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dora Koop of Skidmore; two daughters, Mrs. Gwen Priour of Edna and Mrs. Marjorie Ann Kohl of Victoria; two sons, Walter G. of Vanderbilt and Kenneth D. of Vanderbilt and Kenneth D. of San Antonio; six sisters, Mrs. Alice Roberson, Mrs. Juanita Browning, Mrs. Natalie Crawford and Mrs. Norris Fitzpatrick, all of Edna, Mrs. Elnora Shubert of Vanderbilt, and Mrs. Pearl Schumak of Dallas; four brothers, Virgil of Vanderbilt, and Ewald, George and Jimmy, all of Edna; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral To Be Held Friday Morning For William A. Koop

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at the Lutheran Church for William August Koop, who passed away May 4 in the hospital at Ganado, following a three-day illness. Minister Marvin H. Lehnhardt will officiate, and burial will be in the Edna Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Koop, Harold Koop, Francis Koop, Virgil Koop, Ewald Koop and Georgie Koop.

Mr. Koop was born Nov. 7, 1896 in Seymour, Indiana. He was formerly a farmer and had been a resident of Jackson County since 1908. He was a veteran of World War I and had resided at 811 N. Williams in Edna.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Koop; one son, William D. Koop of Edna; three daughters, Mrs. Emily Chase and Mrs. Betty Unger of Edna, and Mrs. Evelyn Elsik of Dallas; two sister, Mrs. Louise Knoernschild of Edna and Mrs. Annie Otte of Indiana; and two brothers, Frank and Arnold Koop of Edna; also nine grandchildren.

Clarence Darwin Kornegay

Edna – Funeral services for Clarence Darwin Kornegay, 65, of Edna, who died Saturday in a Houston hospital, will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at Baptist Temple Church in Edna.

The Rev. Howard Boyd will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna.

He was born July 19, 1922, in Chriesman. He was district supervisor over a five-county area for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. He lived in Jackson County for 20 years. He was a member of Edna Masonic Lodge No. 767 and Warren Lodge No. 56 in Caldwell. He was also a member Sharon Temple of Tyler, Scottish Rite Bodies in Waco, Edna Eastern Star and the Shriners. He retired from the U. S. Air Force with the rank of major, having been a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Frances Kornegay of Edna; three daughters, Mrs. Jeanne Higley of Wilmington, Del., Miss Kerrill Kornegay of Arlington, Va. and Judy Lynch of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, Charles David Kornegay of Rising Son, Md. and Mitchell M. Ingram II of Spring; his mother, Lila Black Kornegay of Caldwell; two sisters, Mavis Correnty of Medford Lakes, N. J. and Carrie Jane Lee of Seadrift; two brothers, Byron Kornegay of Caldwell and David Kornegay of Sweeny; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Harvey Reynolds, Jack Kohleffel, Larry Williford, Rex Mayes, Tommy Charbula and Forrest Laughlin.

Honorary pallbearers are Bill Woolverton, Mike Mungovan and members of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Charles Kornegay.

Ann Filla Kotlar

 EDNA - Ann Filla Kotlar of Edna went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the age of 76. She was born in Victoria on June 18, 1933, to the late John and Annie Matejicek Filla. Ann was a longtime member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

Ann is survived by her daughters, Carol Muegge and husband David, Brenda Hasdorff and husband Chuck; son, Larry Kotlar and wife Stacey, all of Edna; sisters, Lydia Sykora, Julie Jurica, Margaret Kucera, and Rosie Kouba; brother, Adolph Filla, all of Victoria; grandchildren, Misty Henke (Ronnie), Casey Muegge (Jamye), Tiffany Carroll (Blake), Clay Muegge, Ashley Ferguson (Ernest), Jason Hasdorff (Ashley), Melissa Hasdorff, Ross Kotlar, Kamryn Kotlar, and Allison Kotlar; and six great-grandchildren who will be forever inspired by her powerful prayers and loving ways.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Johnnie Kotlar; sister, Ruby Filla; and brother, Edwin Filla.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Oaklawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at St Agnes Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Petering and the Rev. Michael Lyons will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Casey Muegge, Clay Muegge, Ross Kotlar, Ronnie Henke, Blake Carroll, Jason Hasdorff and Ernest Ferguson.

Honorary pallbearers are all Kotlar Plumbing employees, former and present.

Johnnie Edward Kotlar

Edna – Johnnie Edward Kotlar, 61, of Edna, died Sunday, March 29, 1992, in a Victoria hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Kotlar was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Hillje, to the late Frank Joe and Agnes Koudela Kotlar. Mr. Kotlar was the owner/operator of Kotlar Plumbing and Heating Co., which he opened in 1954 after serving in the U. S. Marine Corps for two years. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3421, and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors: wife, Ann Filla Kotlar, whom he married July 24, 1951 in Inez; daughters, Carol Muegge and Brenda Davis, both of Edna; son, Larry Kotlar of Edna; sisters, Cecelia Hoffman of Nada, Betty Juranek of Katy, Bessie Juranek of Ganado, Margie Drastata of Palacios; brother, Blasé Kotlar of Houston; six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Popp, and a brother, Frank.

Rosary, 7 p. m. Monday, Slavik Funeral Home.

Services, 10 a. m. Tuesday, St. Agnes Catholic Church, Edna, the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy, pastor officiating.

Louis J. Kozelsky

Edna – Louis J. “Skipper” Kozelsky Sr., 51, business manager of the Edna Independent School District since 1973 and a former Edna businessman, died Saturday in a Victoria hospital.

Mr. Kozelsky was the owner of Kozelsky Motor Co. in Edna from 1952 until 1973 and prior to that time owned a grocery store in Ganado for a year and a half and then Kozelsky Motor Co. in Yoakum. He was born July 26, 1925, in Hungerford, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1946 and then taught school in East Bernard.

He was a past grand knight of the Edna Knights of Columbus in 1956 and 1957, was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and a former member of the Edna Lions Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Monday at St. Agnes with Bishop Hugo Gerberman, pastor, and the Rev. Joe Webb, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens of Edna.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p. m. Sunday at Slavik Funeral Home with Bishop Gerberman officiating.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Winnie Harang Kozelsky; four daughters, Misses Sue and Stella Kozelsky of Edna, Miss Libby Ann Kozelsky of San Antonio and Mrs. Pat Begue of Houma, La.; a son, Louis Kozelsky Jr. of Austin; his mother, Mrs. Joe Kozelsky of East Bernard, and one grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Eugene Gouaux Jr., Warren Joe Harang III, Ben Harang, Bryan Harang, Charles Begue and David Vacek.

Winifred H. Kozelsky

Edna – Winifred Harang Kozelsky, 79, of Edna, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002.

She was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Humble, to the late Warren Jay Harang Sr. and Winifred Foret Kozelsky. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors: daughters, Elizabeth Florey of San Antonio, Mary Patricia Begue of Houma, La., Winifred Suzanne Lanford of Humble and Bella Tew of Edna; son, Louis Kozelsky Jr. of Edna; sister, Mary Lee Picou of Virginia Beach, Va.; brother, Warren J. Harang Jr. of Thibodaux, La.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Louis Kozelsky Sr.; parents; sister, Mary Catherine Couaux; and brother Donald D. Harang.

Services will be 10:30 a. m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Msgr. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating.

Joe Krajcik Sr.
Joe Krajcicek, 81, Retired JC Farmer Buried Wednesday

Funeral services for Joe Krajcicek Sr., a retired farmer and a native of Czechoslovakia, were held Wednesday afternoon from Slavik Chapel, with Rev. B. Janacek officiating. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery.

Mr. Krajcicek, a well-known farmer, had lived in this county since 1919. He was born Feb. 20, 1879 in Czechoslovakia, and passed away on May 10. He resided here at 305 Hoover.

He is survived by a daughter, Liddie Krajcicek of Edna, a son, Joe Krajcicek of Victoria, one granddaughter, and three sisters, Mrs. Liddie Supak of Deanville, Mrs. Francis Supak of Houston and Mrs. Carolyn Krestnik of Bryan.

Edna – Services for Liddie Krajcik, 90, of Edna, who died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, will be 11:30 a. m. today at Slavik Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating.

She was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Caldwell, to the late Joe Sr., and Rosie Polasek Krajcik. She was a retired sales clerk of Ben Franklin’s of Edna. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic church.

Burial will be at Memory Gardens of Edna, Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

Edna Woman Found Shot To Death

Edna, May 27—Joe Krajcik, an employee of the B. G. Henry Construction Co., came home from work about 5 o’clock Friday afternoon to find his wife, Mrs. Rosie Krajcik, 67, sitting in a chair with a .22 rifle bullet through her temple. She had apparently been dead several hours.

Justice of the Peace Joe Cherry returned an inquest verdict of suicide.

Krajcik could give no reason for his wife’s action. She had been in good health and had not seemed despondent when he left home Friday morning.

Surviving besides Krajcik are a daughter, Miss Liddie Krajcik of Edna, and a son, Joe Krajcik Jr. of Victoria.

Frank J. Kraus

Edna – Frank Joseph Kraus, 77, a long-time resident of Edna, died Tuesday in a Ganado hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stanley Petru officiating. Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p. m. Wednesday at the Jackson County Funeral Service chapel.

Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery.

Mr. Kraus, a retired carpenter, was born March 10, 1890, in Galveston. He survived the Galveston storm, and as a youth was a choir boy in a Catholic Church in Galveston. His wife, who preceded him in death, was the former Mary Gayle, member of a pioneer Jackson County family.

He is survived by numerous relatives in the Edna area.

Helen Louise Kraus

Deer Park -- Helen Louise Kraus, age 83, of Deer Park, passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2008. Louise was born March 8, 1925 to Edward Harmon and Ida Lee Hamman in Yoakum. She was raised in Edna. At 21 she married Raymond Earl Kraus on Nov. 7, 1946. Together they raised two children in a Christian home and celebrated 62 years of happy marriage.

She was strong in her faith and enjoyed being an active and involved member of Christian Temple Assembly of God.

Louise is survived by her devoted husband, Raymond; daughter, Peggy Womack; son, Richard and wife Cathy; sister, Josephine Janecka of Yoakum; grandchildren, Krystal, Greg, Kelly and husband Jake, Gary and wife Melissa, Kyle, Mark, Kaitlyn, Kaleb, and Emmett and wife Bobbi; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Adam, Kaleb, Miley, Cody, Richard, Brooklyn, Emmett IV, and Ty; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, J.V., Jesse, Curtis, Howard, and Joseph; sisters, Ruth, Letha, Tinie, and Oluia; and grandson, Richard Wayne.

Louise was deeply committed to her family, gracious and welcoming to those who entered her home, and always thoughtful of the needs of others.

Mary Gayle Kraus
Services Held for Mrs. F. J. Kraus Native of County

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Slavik Chapel for Mrs. Mary Gayle Kraus, 73, a native of Jackson County. Rev. Clifford Zirkel Jr. officiated, and interment was in the Edna Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Gayle, W. B. Gayle, J. W. Gayle, Sam L. Gayle Jr., J. B. Gayle Jr. and W. B. Gayle Jr.

Mrs. Kraus was born August 31, 1885 in this county, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Gayle. She passed away at her home on the Yoakum Highway on May 23, after an illness of several years. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, F. J. Kraus, and three sisters, Sally Wofford, Beulah Green and Frances Gayle, all of Edna; and two brothers, W. G. Gayle of LaWard and Sam L. Gayle of Corpus Christi.

Mary Gayle Kraus, wife of F. J. Kraus, passed away at her home five miles north of Edna Saturday morning, May 23, after an illness of several years. May was the eldest daughter of B. B. and Eudora Bankhead Gayle, deceased, a descendant of Jackson County’s first settlers who came to this part of Texas in 1830.

Mrs. Kraus, educated in music, a teacher, composer and talented pianist, lived in Houston and Galveston many years. She was associated with the leading musical artists of the period. Music was her life’s work until her retirement when she and her husband moved from Houston to their bay shore home in Palacios. Nine years ago they came back to Jackson County, the place she loved and to which she wanted to return.

Mary was a lover of nature in all of its beauty; she loved the great oak trees in her yard and loved to listen to the chirp of the squirrel and the song of the birds.

Mary’s great heart went out to the needy and underprivileged. She gave generously to all who came to her door, and, to the unwanted and uncared for dumb animals. She was a Bible student from girlhood. Her belief was that God was love and everything good and beautiful.

Raymond Kraus

Raymond Earl Kraus, 88 of Deer Park, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 30, 2012. Raymond was born January 18, 1924 to Richard Julius Kraus and Gladys Edith Andrus Kraus in Houston, Texas. He married Helen Louise Hamman November 7, 1946 in Edna, Texas. Together they raised two children in a Christian home and celebrated 62 years of happy marriage.

Raymond is survived by daughter, Peggy Womack; son Richard and wife Cathy; sisters Blanche Quinn Mason and Maxine Wilma McAfee; grandchildren Krystal, Greg, Kelly and husband Jake, Gary and wife Melissa, Kyle, Mark and fiancée Bethany, Kaitlyn, Kaleb, and Emmett and wife Bobbie; great grandchildren Stephanie, Adam, Kaleb, Miley, Cody, Richard, Brooklyn, Emmet IV, and Ty; many nieces, nephews, and numerous family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Louise; his parents; and grandson Richard Wayne.

Raymond grew up in Houston, Louise, and Edna, Texas. He graduated Salutatorian in 1942 from Industrial (Vanderbilt) High School where he was the first football captain and quarterback and carried a life-long love of watching sports, especially college football. After high school graduation he soon enlisted in the US Navy and served 1943-1946 on the USS Pastores and USS Sebec in the Pacific Theatre in Admiral Halsey's Fleet.

He worked for Shell Oil Company in Deer Park, Texas 1952 to retirement in 1986 as an insulator and utility operator. He was a member of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union Local 4-376.

Raymond was very devoted and faithful to service in his church. He became a Christian in 1953 and joined Oaklawn Assembly of God Church. The Oaklawn congregation joined Magnolia Park Assembly of God congregation in 1976 and became Christian Temple Assembly of God. As a strong Christian and faithful steward Raymond served 38 plus years as a dedicated Board Member and diligent Church Treasurer.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are grandsons Greg Barkley, Gary Barkley, twins Kyle and Mark Womack, Emmett Story, and nephew William McAfee. Honorary pallbearers are longstanding fellow board members served with at Oaklawn, Mitchell Frisby, Mickey Morgan, Oscar Salinas, Clifford Stanfield and George Webb.

Edna – Alma Asbeck Krenzler, 94, of Edna who died Tuesday, March 2, 1999.

She was born Oct. 19, 1904, in Jackson County to the late Louis N. and Lillian Hazelwood Asbeck. She was a rancher, homemaker and member Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church.

Survivor: sister, Eleanor Grafius of Edna.

Fritz Krenzler, 62, Jackson Rancher, Buried Wednesday

Funeral services for Fritz August Krenzler, 62, were held at Slavik Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Clifford Zirkel Jr. of the First Methodist Church officiated, and interment was in the Edna Cemetery.

Mr. Krenzler, a well-known rancher, who resided in Edna, passed away Sept. 7 in the hospital at Ganado, following a two-day illness.

He was born July 31, 1897 in Houston, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Krenzler. He came to Jackson County about 12 years ago. Mr. Krenzler was a member of the Methodist church here.

He is survived by his widow, Alma, of Edna; a son, Harold Krenzler of Edna; his mother, Mrs. C. A. Krenzler of Houston; and two brothers, W. H. and K. E. Krenzler, both of Houston; and also by two grandchildren.

Last Rites Set Today For August John Kresta

Funeral services for August John Kresta, 56, long time farmer of Vanderbilt, were slated for today, Thursday, Aug. 26 at 10 a. m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna with Rev. Father Michael O’Shaughnessy, pastor of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Vanderbilt, officiating.

Mr. Kresta was born Jan. 6, 1909 in Hallettsville. He moved to Jackson County in 1928. He died in Vanderbilt, Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, one daughter, Mrs. Miladia Walker of San Antonio, two sons, Milton Kresta of Garland and James Kresta of Vanderbilt, four brothers, Julius, Joe and Victor Kresta of Hallettsville and Robert Kresta of San Antonio and six sisters, Mrs. Emma Michanek [Micanik], Mrs. Frances Kleekac, and Mrs. Rosie Der_er all of Ganado, Mrs. Pauline Harel of Wharton, Mrs. Mary Uleak and Miss Annie Kresta of Houston.

Interment was in Edna Cemetery with Slavik Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Harold L. Krenzler

Edna – Harold Lee Krenzler, 58, of Edna died Sunday in an Edna hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born July 17, 1927, in Houston he was a retired Edna rancher and was retired from the Texas Department of Human Resources. He was a retired member of Edna’s fire department and a past member of the Edna city police.

He had lived in Jackson County since 1950, and was the son of the late Fritz A. Krenzler.

He is survived by his mother, Alma Asbeck Krenzler of Edna; a son, Kelly E. Kahanek of Victoria; a daughter, Ann Rene Melton of Edna; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p. m. from the Slavik Funeral home chapel with the Rev. Russel Moon officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna.

Pallbearers will be David Welheim, James and Ronnie DeBord, Larry Raybon, James Garner and Johnny Moellering.

Vanderbilt – Mary A. Kresta, 93, of Vanderbilt, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003.

She was born May 3, 1929, in Lavaca County, to the late Thomas and Mary Kalisek Steinocher. She was a seamstress.

SAN ANTONIO - Margaret Kirby Cox Krueger, 81 of San Antonio, formerly of Edna, passed away on December 15, 2013. She was born in Edna on July 12, 1932 to the late Edward Ray and Alma Montgomery.

She is survived by her sons, Johnny Cox Jr. (Relda) of Indiana, Billy Cox (Charlotte), and Terry Cox both of San Antonio, one sister Jo Ann Blanar (Alvin) of Edna, sister-in-law Wilma Kirby of Victoria.

Margaret was preceded in death by: 1st husband, Johnny Cox: 2nd husband, Wesley Krueger; parents, and brothers, Douglas Kirby, Billy Kirby, Edward Kirby, and Jimmy Kirby.

Edna – Elma “Lou” Baker Kubala, 87, of Edna, died Monday, May 16, 2005.

She was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Nopal, to the late James L. “Jim” and Birdye L. Lowrance Baker. She was the retired owner of Kubala Furniture Store, a member of the Blue Belles at Jackson Healthcare Center, and an election clerk. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Patsy Annette Campbell Kubala, 89, passed away on Friday February 27, 2026.  She was born on August 18, 1936, to Luther and Reba Campbell.  Patsy is survived by her sons Tommy (Denise) Kubala and Kelly Kubala; her seven grandchildren Brandon (Amanda), Matthew (Holly), Kassie (Cole), Hunter (Kelly), Kathryn (Jordan), Cody (Catt) and Macy; seventeen great-grandchildren Kassidy, Campton, Kaleb, Keegan, Kenan, Collin, Callaway, Karson, Clayton, McAlister, Covington, Holland, Koop, Willa, Jack, Crew and Perri; and half-sister Nancy Rainwater. 

She is preceded in death by her husband Larry Kubala; her father Luther Campbell, mother Reba Rainwater and stepfather Bernard Rainwater; her brothers Rex, Perry, and Gene Campbell; and granddaughter Terra Kubala.  

A graveside service will be held on Monday March 2, 2026, at 2:00pm at Memory Gardens of Edna cemetery with Brandon Kubala officiating.  Pallbearers are Matthew Kubala, Cody Kubala, Campton Hicks, Kaleb Kubala, Collin Kubala and Crew Quinn.  Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren.

Clarence Leslie Kubecka
Funeral Held Here For Kubecka Child

Funeral rites for Clarence Leslie Kubecka, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Kubecka of the Cordele community, were held Sunday at 3 p. m. in the Slavik Funeral Home.

The boy died June 24 in the hospital at Raymondville, where he had been confined for two months from complications resulting from cancer of the bone. He had been ill since last September Clarence was born in Victoria on Sept. 29, 1949.

Survivors are his parents and four little brothers.

The services were conducted by Rev. Elmer Fletcher. He was assisted by Rev. Frank Evans at the interment in Edna Cemetery.

Edna – Leo Kubecka, 83, of Edna, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, of natural causes.

He was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Breslau, to the late Peter Frank and Frances Barecky Kubecka. He was an Edna businessman and Cordele rancher.

He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Clarence Leslie Kubecka.

Michael Aaron Kubecka

Edna – Michael Aaron Kubecka, 56, of Edna, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008. He was born on Feb. 19, 1952, in Victoria, to the late Leo S. Kubecka and Jennie Mae Kubecka of Edna.

Michael was a rancher and was employed by Kubecka Flying Service for 30+ years.

Michael is survived by his mother, wife, Nancy Kubecka; son, Aaron Lee Kubecka of Spring; stepsons, Jeremy Bazan and Colby Bazan, both of Edna; brothers, David James Kubecka of Houston, Gregory Lewis Kubecka of Victoria, and Larry Wayne Kubecka of Inez. Michael is also survived by his grandchildren, Brianna Nicole Kubecka and Cody Melancon.

Michael was preceded in death by his father and brothers, Clarence Kubecka and Lonnie Ray Kubecka.

Edna – Mrs. Agnes Mary Kucera, 57, a long time resident of Edna, died Tuesday in Victoria.

Mrs. Kucera was born Dec. 28, 1912 in Moravia, Tex., and had been a resident of Jackson County for the past 41 years.

She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the SPJST Lodge and a matron at Texana Home.

Rosary will be recited Wednesday at the Slavik Funeral Home at 8 p. m.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday from St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Flanagan officiating. Burial will follow in Edna Cemetery.

The body will lie in state in the church from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

Survivors include her husband, Joe V. Kucera of Edna; a daughter, Mrs. Rose Pupa of Ganado; four sons, Leo Kucera of Edna, Emil and Jody Kucera of Ganado and Johnny Kucera of Victoria; two sisters, Mrs. Adolph Matula and Mrs. Conrad Frysak, both of Ganado; three brothers, Albert Strelec of El Campo and Charlie and Aaron Strelec, both of Ganado and 12 grandchildren.

Joe V. Kucera

Edna – Joe V. Kucera, 86, of Edna died Friday, Sept. 6, 1996.

He was born Sept. 20, 1909, in Czechoslovakia to the late Steve and Mary Holy Kucera. He was a farmer and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge and SPJST.

Survivors: daughter, Rose Tupa of Ganado; sons, Leo Kucera of Victoria and Emil Kucera and Jodie Kucera, both of Edna; sisters, Mary Jane Kresta, Lillie Hahn and Albina Horton, all of Ganado, and Lydia Elswick of Victoria; brothers, Frank Kucera and Will Kucera, both of Houston, Calvin Kucera of Hardin and Steve Kucera of New Mexico; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: wife, Agnes Strelec Kucera in 1970; son, Johnny Kucera in 1982; and brothers, John Kucera and Charlie Kucera.

A rosary will be recited at 3:15 p. m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna.

Services will be held at 3:30 p. m. today, at the church, the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating.

Burial will be at Memory Gardens. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

Larry W. Kucera

Edna – Larry Wayne Kucera, 52, of Edna, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002.

He was born March 20, 1950, in LaSalle, to Ellen Kucera of Edna and the late John Kucera. He was retired from the army and a member of First Baptist Church in Edna.

Survivors: wife, Luanne Kucera; daughter, Melissa Werts of Durango, Colo.; son, Trenton Kucera of Edna; sister, Mildred Hyde of North Carolina; brothers, Herman Kucera of Telferner, Charles Kucera of Inez and Clarence Kucera of Sour Lake; and four grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: father; and brother, Billy Joe Kucera.

Services will be 9 a. m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Edna, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating.

Sharron Ann Kucera

Victoria – Sharron Ann Clark Kucera, 71, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. She was born on Sunday, January 28, 1945 in Victoria, TX to Albert and Lydia Cervenka Clark. On June 20, 1964, Sharron married the love of her life, Emil Kucera. They were married for 52 years this past June, and he would be her best friend for the rest of her life.

Sharron was a loving daughter, wife, mother grandmother and great-grandmother, otherwise known as ‘Granny’. She loved her family and her favorite thing to do was to cook for them. You never left her home hungry, and always had food for days. She was truly one of a kind, tough as nails on the outside, but so loving, caring, helpful and generous to all. Just know she is in paradise and happy as she can be.

Sharron is survived by her husband, Emil, her sons: Scotty Kucera (Shera) and David Kucera (Valerie), her sister; Norma Wright, her brother; William Clark. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Marissa Morrow (Dustin), Heidi Kucera, Matthew Kucera, Brad Kucera, and Stefanie Schoonover (Mason), Emily Kucera, and Kyle Kucera. Her Great-Grandchildren; Peyton, Jaxson, and Ciela Morrow, Slade Gonzales, and Briggs and Ellah Schoonover.

Sharron is preceded in death by her parents, and her sons; Timothy and Thomas Kucera.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 5:pm to 7:pm at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Service will be Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 1:30 pm at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel with Jack Bourland officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna.

Pallbearers will be; Matthew Kucera, Brad Kucera, Kyle Kucera, Dustin Morrow, Mason Schoonover, and Randy Kucera. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Steven Koliba, Jason Kucera, Keith Kucera, Jodie kucera, Jr., Michael Tupa, Mark Tupa, and Darrin Kucera.

Edna – Funeral services for Albert Otto Kulow, 78, who died Sunday, will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the First Assembly of God Church in Edna.

Mr. Kulow was born May 24, 1909, in Holland, Texas, son of John and Emma Kulow.

Surviving are a son, Gus Kulow of Glen Rose; three daughters, Dorothy Filip of Victoria, Ruth Newman of Bloomington, and Barbara Newman of Seadrift; seven sisters, Edna and Hilda Yendrey, Elizabeth and Nora Kulow, all of Edna, Ellea Mae Wilkerson of Ingleside, Dora Palm of Sealy and Leona Heldberg of Houston; and eight grandchildren.

Edna – Elizabeth Kulow, 93, of Edna, died Saturday, April 3, 2004.

She was born Oct. 8, 1910, in Holland, to the late John and Emma Sturm Kulow. She was a homemaker and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors: son, Charles Kulow of Victoria; sisters, Nora Kulow and Hilda Yendrey both of Edna, Leona Helberg of Houston and Ellie Mae Wilkerson of Clute; and three grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: sisters, Dora Palm and Edna Yendrey; and brothers, Albert Kulow, Hugo Kulow and Leo Kulow.

Visitation will be 5:30 – 8 p. m. Tuesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapels.

Ella Hoyer Kulow

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Hoyer Kulow, 73, of Bloomington, who died Friday, will be held at 1 p. m. Tuesday at the First Assembly of God Church of Edna.

Pastor Edwin Cann of the Bloomington First Assembly of God Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna under the direction of Jackson County Funeral Service.

She was born Feb. 23, 1913, in Flatonia to the late Garheart and Annie Hoyer. She had been a resident of Victoria County for 47 years.

Surviving are her husband, Albert Kulow of Bloomington; three daughters, Dorothy Filip of Victoria, Ruth Newman of Bloomington and Barbara Newman of Fairfield; a son, Gus Kulow of Glen Rose; a sister, Mrs. Annie M. Zimmerman of Burkburnett; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Charles and David Kulow, Lee Allen Palm, Michael Filip, Alfred Newman and Glen Sarlis. Robert Dial will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Mrs. Emma Kulow

Edna – Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Kulow, 84, of Edna will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday from the Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church here, with the Rev. Arthur J. Clement officiating.

Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery, under direction of the Jackson County Funeral Service.

Mrs. Kulow was born Jan. 15, 1888 at Holland, Tex., and came to Edna in 1929. She died Sunday in a Ganado hospital after a long illness.

Surviving are seven daughters, Elizabeth and Nora Kulow and Mrs. Edna Yendry, all of Edna, Mrs. Leona Heldberg of Houston, Mrs. Hilda Yendry of San Antonio, Mrs. Ellie Mae Wilkerson of Ingleside and Mrs. Dora Palm of Sealy, three sons, Leo of Edna, Albert of Inez and Hugo of Sealy; a sister, Minnie Strum of Bartlett; two brothers, Herman and Ernest Strum, both of Holland; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services Held for John F. Kulow 77, Resident 32 Years

Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Sunday at Slavik Chapel for John Frederick Kulow, 77, Jackson County farmer and resident here since 1928. Rev. J. W. Kern of Inez Lutheran Church officiated, with burial in Edna Cemetery.

Mr. Kulow died Friday morning at the age of 77. He was born at Ramey, Texas, in Colorado County, May 11, 1884, and was raised around Austin County. Then at the age of 21 he moved to Bell County, and later to Holland, Texas. There he married Miss Emma Sturn on Nov. 19, 1907 in St. John Lutheran Church at Bartlett.

He and his wife lived there until 1921, then moved to Austin County. Six years later they moved to Jackson County, and lived here 32 years.

Mr. Kulow is survived by his wife Emma, and seven daughters, three sons, 19 grandchildren, and one brother; also a niece, two nephews and several cousins.

Leo E. Kulow

Edna – Leo Ernest Kulow, 68, of Edna died Tuesday in an Edna rest home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at the Edna Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Harry Johnson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna.

Mr. Kulow was born August 21, 1918, in Holland, Bell County, Texas, son of John and Emma Sturn Kulow. He was a laborer and worked as a ranch hand for James Taylor.

Surviving are seven sisters, Edna and Hilda Yendrey and Elizabeth and Nora Kulow, all of Edna, Ellie Mae Wilkerson of Ingleside, Dora Palm of Sealy and Leona Heldberg of Houston; and a brother, Albert Kulow of Bloomington.

Pallbearers will be Lee Allen Palm, Clem Nava, Morris Nava, Allin Newman, Alfred Newman will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Nora Wilmina Olga Kulow

Nora Wilmina Olga Kulow, 89, of Edna, died Thursday, May 6, 2004.

She was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Holland, TX, to the late John and Emma Sturm Kulow. She was a homemaker and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors: son, David Kulow of Edna; sisters, Hilda E. Yendrey of Edna, Ellie Mae Wilkerson of Katy, and Leona Helberg of Houston.

Services Held for Mrs. Marion Kunz, Native of County

Services for Mrs. Marion Manly Kunz, 61, a native of Jackson County, were held Monday from Slavik’s Chapel, with Rev. Collis McKinney of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery.

Mrs. Kunz was born Dec. 3, 1898 in Jackson County, and passed away Sept. 27 in the hospital at Ganado, after an illness of nearly three years. She resided in Victoria a while before she became ill.

Surviving relatives include two nieces, Mrs. Jessie Collier and Mrs. T. J. Bolling, both of Edna.

Viva R. Kuykendall

Katy – Viva Ramsey Kuykendall, 91, of Katy died Saturday, Jan. 7, 1995.

Mrs. Kuykendall was born Dec. 1, 1903, in Stampede Valley to the late Thomas Bradford and Pearl McKinney Ramsey. She was a photographer of Methodist Hospital Photo Lab and a Baptist. She was a member of the Austin and Houston Order of the Eastern Star and Gray Panthers.

Survivors: daughters, Helen Thomas of Houston; sons, C. L. Kuykendall of Victoria, Thomas Kuykendall of Katy and Mac Kuykendall of Kingwood; brothers, Bradford Ramsey of Waco and Orville Ramsey of Port Lavaca; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
