Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Lolita Baptist Church for Mrs. Mary Newport, 85, a Lolita resident since 1926. Rev. A. M. Averett and Rev. Frank Hollan officiated, and interment was in the Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were announced as Calmer Carlton, Ray Revel Jr., D. J. Jordan, J. W. Fitzpatrick, Doc Moody, Sam Allen, Edward Klaus and A. Young. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Newport passed away at 5:45 p. m. Saturday at her home in Lolita. She was born in Indiana and had lived in Wharton before moving to Lolita, where she was a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Charlie of Lolita; three daughters, Mrs. Merle Fitzpatrick and Miss Flossy Newport; both of Lolita, and Mrs. Annie Hurt of Ganado: and also by three sisters and two brothers in Indiana.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p. m. from the Lolita Baptist Church for Orville Mike Newport, 47, oil field worker, who died at his home last Friday at 11:30 a. m. Revs. Frank Hollan, T. D. Felts and Raymond Drew officiated and burial was in the Edna Cemetery under the direction of the Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers were: W. Martin, J. Edwards, Cly Hoskins, Ed Holmes, Uranius Deaton, Donald DeAtley, J. P. Allen and Maurice Grover. Mr. Newport was born May 8, 1905, at El Campo. Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Revel and Mrs. D. J. Jordan, of Edna; a brother, Charlie Newport of Lolita; three sisters, Miss Flossie Newport and Mrs. Merl Fitzpatrick of Lolita and Mrs. Annie Hurt of Ganado, and one grandchild.

EDNA -- Funeral services for Jesse Lloyd Newton, 73, of Star Route, Edna, will be held at 3 pm. Sunday from the Jackson County Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Frederick officiating. Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery under direction of Jackson County Funeral Service. Nephews will be pallbearers. Mr. Newton was born Aug. 14, 1900 at Mt. Pleasant, and was a retired oil field employee. He died Friday in an El Campo hospital. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Newton of Edna; four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Milstead and Mrs. Peggy Mayhew of Bay City, Mrs. Esther Miller of Dallas and Mrs. Eula Harvill of lowa Park; and three brothers, Otis of Kingsville, Harvey of Pelsa, Ark., and Melvin of Ras Tanura, Saudia Arabia.

EDNA- Mary Newton, 92, of Edna, died Friday, May 6, 2005. She was born Aug. 18, 1912, in Jackson County, to the late Valso A. and Alice May Hokett McDonald. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors: sister, Eunice Hicks of Ganado; and brother, Don McDonald of Pawnee. Preceded in death by: husband, Lloyd Newton; sisters, Nellie Ellison and Polly Chivers. EDNA- Annie Lee Nickel, 80, of Edna died in a local hospital Monday, Nov. 4, 1991, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Nickel was born Oct. 12, 1911, in Jackson County to the late Wes and Bertha Hack Rogers. She, along with her husband, was engaged in farming and ranching most of her life. She was a self-employed rancher and a member of the First Baptist Church of Edna. Survivors: daughters, Rosalie Hengst of Victoria and Charlene Yendrey of Edna; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Charlie Nickel, in 1978; parents; sisters, Birdie Rubac and Janie Nickels; and brother, Vernie Rogers. Services 10 a.m. Thursday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Joe Wes Rubac officiating. Burial in Memory Gardens of Edna, Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152. EDNA -- Annie Lucille Nickel, 81, of Edna, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997. She was born June 11, 1916, in Victoria County to the late Peter Antone and Theresa Prukop Garvel. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Survivors: husband, William Eugene Nickel; stepdaughter, Doris Rodriquez of Elgin; stepsons, Randy Nickel and Bobby Nickel, both of Elgin; sister, Rebecca "Ruby" Smiga of Victoria; and 12 grandchildren. Preceded in death by: stepsons, Charles William Nickel and Michael Anthony Nickel; sister, Clara Garvel Watts; and brothers, Herbert Garvel, Edmund Garvel, Leonard Garvel and Alois Garvel. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. today, at the church, the Rev. Benton Thurmond officiating. August L. Nickel, 59, a well known stock farmer of Navidad, Jackson County, died at a local hospital at 12:55 o'clock this morning. The body was conveyed to Edna this afternoon by the Goldman-Waters Undertaking Company for burial there Friday. Mr. Nickel was born in Clinton, Mo., May 7, 1882, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nickel. He is survived by his wife and five children.

EDNA-Barbara Jean Nickel, 59, of Edna, died Friday, June 11, 2004. She was born Aug. 20, 1944, in Edna, to Earlene Howard Jennings of Victoria and the late Arthur Warren Jennings. EDNA -- Charles William Nickel, 77, of Edna died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Slavik Chapel with the Rev. Joe Wes Rubac officiating. Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Mr. Nickel was born Oct. 15, 1901 at Flatonia, and was a retired Alcoa employee. Surviving are his wife, Annie Lee Nickel of Edna; two daughters, Rosalie Hengst of. Edna and Charlene Yendrey of Victoria; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. EDNA- Frank Eugene Nickel, 56, of Edna died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1992. He was born Oct. 29, 1936, in Jackson County to the late Woodrow Wilson and Janie Elizabeth Rogers Nickel. He retired in 1987 after 16 years of service with the city of Edna as street superintendent. Mr. Nickel was a member of the Lake Texana Trail Riders and the Church of Christ. Survivors: wife, Georgia Jackson Nickel; daughters, Sandy Bell and Sindy Nickel, both of Edna; sisters, Kathy Swain of Edna and Faye Macha and Betty Neuman, both of Lolita; brothers, James Nickel and Ray Nickel, both of Edna; and two grandchildren. EDNA -- Funeral services for Maggie Lena Nickel, 90, of Edna will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Slavik Chapel. with Bishop Hugo Gerbermann officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the other grandsons Mrs. Nickel was born May 19, 1887 in Nacogdoches, and had lived in Jackson County for 75 years. She died Sunday in a local rest home. Surviving are six daughters, Mabel May Rogers, Minnie Lee Yendrey and Maggie Lorene Terry, all of Edna, Mary Elizabeth Graham and Julie Rosie Keasler of Irving, and Annie Mae Howarth of San Antonio: two sons. Woodrow and Willie Nickel of Edna, a brother, Leonard Baliek of Kerrville; 35 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ulysses Grant Nickel, 75, longtime Jackson County resident, were held Tuesday at 9:45 a. m. at the Slavik Chapel and at 10 a. m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Rev. Stanley Petru officiating. Rosary was said Monday at 7:30 p. m. at the funeral home. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lester Rogers, Jimmie Rogers, Robert Louis Terry, Frank Nickel, Roy Nickel and Eugene L. Yendrey. Mr. Nickel was born Jan. 15, 1888 in Monet, Mo., but had lived in this county since he was 12 years old. He married the former Maggie Lena Blaliek in Yoakum in 1911, and was a retired farmer. He passed away Sept. 29 at his home here at 1309 Green.
He is
survived by his wife. Mrs. Maggie Nickel, and by the following sons
and daughters: Mabel Rogers, Minnie Lee Yendrey, Woodrow Wilson

EDNA -- William "Willie" Eugene Nickel, 73, of Edna, died Monday, June 12, 2000. He was born April 15, 1927, in Jackson County, to the late Ulysses S. Grant and Maggie L. Bielek Nickel. He was a retired potman at Alcoa Aluminum and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors: daughter, Doris Rodriguez of Elgin; sons, Randy Nickel and Bobby Nickel, both of Elgin; sisters, Lorene Terry, Mabel Rogers and Minnie Yendrey, all of Edna; Mary Graham of Grand Prairie and Annie May Howarth of Plano; and nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by: wife, Annie Lucille Garvel Nickel; sons, Mike Nickel and Charlie Nickel; parents; sister, Ginger Kessler; brother, Woodrow Nickel. EDNA -- Gloria Ann Nieto, of Edna, Texas went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, with her loving family by her side at the age of 56. She was born February 15, 1960, in Victoria, Texas, to Juan E. Samora and the late Eloisa Partida Samora. Gloria was a loving wife, daughter, grandmother, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend who will be missed dearly. She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Miguel Nieto, Sr.; father, Juan E. Samora; daughters, Sonia Quick and her husband Greg, and Julie Nieto; son, Miguel Nieto, Jr. and his wife Brandi; sister, Virginia Figirova; brother, Albert Samora; grandchildren, Ivan Joe Nieto and Colt Alexander Quick; fur babies, Oscar and Roscoe; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Gloria is preceded in death by her mother, Eloisa Partida Samora; sister, Esther Garza; niece, Abigail Zapata. EDNA- Edith Ann Noble, 96, of Houston and formerly of Red Bluff and Edna died Wednesday, June 22, 1994. She was born Dec. 15, 1897, in Lavaca County to the late Charles and Mary Whitfield Hoffman. She married the late William C. Noble on Sept. 12, 1915, in Hope. She was a member of Edna Garden Club, Women of the Church and Presbyterian Church. Survivors: daughters, Edna Elizabeth Coon of The Woodlands; sons, Charles William Noble of Houston and Eddie Wayne Noble of Coos Bay, Ore.; sister, Willie Mae Gibson of East Bernard; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. EDNA -- Joel N. "Sarge" Nordin, 68, of Edna died Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996. He was born May 14, 1928, in Glen Flora to the late John Edward and Aurora Cooper Nordin Atkinson. He was a retired sergeant in the US. Air Force with Strategic Air Command as an electrician. Mr. Nordin was a Lutheran. Survivors: sisters, Mildred Love of Cibilo and Ella Koons of Kansas; and brothers, Curtis D. Nordin of Edna, Clyde W. Nordin of Winfield, La., and B. L. Nordin of Palacios. Cloyd Hudson, Homer Arnold and C. D. Nordin Mrs. Norris was born Dec. 26. 1894, and was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She died Friday in a Pasadena hospital. Surviving are one son, Dr. Albert Norris of Pasadena: five grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna. Mrs. Norris was born in Edna May 12, 1928. She was a retired secretary. Survivors include three daughters, Debbie, Kathy and Beverly, all of Houston; a son, John Fondren Norris of Houston; her mother, Mrs. John H. Kennedy of Edna; two sisters, Mrs. Joyce Janak of El Campo and Mrs. Martha Storz of Edna; two brothers, J.W. Kennedy of El Campo and K.E. Kennedy of Denham, La.; and a grandchild.

Funeral services were held this morning at First Baptist Church in Edna for Mrs. Ethel Northen, 69, a resident of this county for seven years. Rev. W. L. Wootan officiated. Pallbearers were W. A. Tabb, Jack Cole, C. E. Martin, J. D. Griffis, N. A. Broom and Johnny Emerson. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery. Mrs. Northen was born Dec. 14, 1889 in Arkansas and moved to Texas and this county seven years ago after residing in Talulah, La. She was a member of the Baptist Church here. She passed away May 19 in the hospital in Ganado, after an illness of some three years. She is survived by her husband, J. M. Northen of 906 N. East St., Edna, and one brother, F. L. Funeral services for Gordon Douglas (Bill) Nowlin, 69, were held Saturday morning at First Baptist Church. Mr. Nowlin, well-known retired businessman and once part-owner of an Edna hardware store, had lived in Jackson County since 1895. Rev. Jack Moore of the First Baptist Church, of which Mr. Nowlin was an active member, officiated at the services. Interment was in Edna Cemetery. He was born Feb. 7, 1892 in Greenfield, Tenn., and came to this county in 1895. He passed away March 9, in Poteet, while visiting a nephew there. Mr. Nowlin is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. B. Cain of Edna; two nephews, Wayne Nowlin of Poteet and Jack Nowlin of Houston, and a niece, Mrs. Helen O'Donnell of Houston.

As briefly announced in last week's Herald, Mrs. Vera Nowlin, widow of the late Mr. Harry W. Nowlin, passed away in a Houston hospital from an heart attack last Thursday. She had been in poor health for several years, and had been in Huntington Park, California visiting her sister with the hope that climate would benefit her health. However, her condition continued to grow worse and she returned to Texas a few days before her death. Mrs. Nowlin was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Donnelly when her condition took a decided turn for the worse. The funeral service was held at the Edna Baptist Church Saturday morning, January 7th, at 10:00 o'clock. Rev. Carl Schlomach, the pastor, conducted the service. The remains were laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery besides those of her late husband who died in 1942. Mrs. Nowlin was born Vera Grenfer, at Detroit, Mich., March 11, 1896. She and Mr. Harry W. Nowlin were married in New Orleans, in 1916. Some time after that they moved to Edna--the former home of her husband. Except for a few years spent in Cuero Mr. and Mrs. Nowlin resided in Edna until their deaths. Mrs. Nowlin was, a devout Christtian, being an active member of the Edna Baptist Church since her residence here. She also took an active interest in civic clubs and the P. T. A. She is survived by two sons, Rev. Wayne Nowlin of Camp Wood, Real County, and Jack Nowlin of Dallas, and one daughter, Mrs. Helen Donnelly of Houston, 4 grand children, and one sister, Mrs. G. H. Lundgren, of Huntington, Park, California. To these bereaved ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.
