Sheriff’s Deputy Killed

Cedar Lane—A district court bailiff was killed early yesterday when a gun he was cleaning accidentally went off.

Grady Cecil Patterson, 36, was on vacation at his home in Cedar Lane when the accident occurred. Investigators said Patterson was cleaning his 9mm service pistol when it fired, striking him in the head.

Emergency vehicles from Sargent and Bay City Emergency Medical Services responded to a 911 call from Patterson’s wife, but he was already dead when members of Bay City EMS arrived on the scene.

Patterson was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 Ray O’Connell at 10:57 a. m. O’Connell also ordered an autopsy to be performed by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office at 10 a. m. today.

Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Sgt. Bruce Page and District Attorney Steve Reis will be present at the autopsy.

Sheriff Keith Kilgore said he called the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers in yesterday to investigate the accident. Two investigators with the DPS Crime Scene Unit flew to Cedar Lane by helicopter from DPS headquarters in Austin.

“We’ve never called in the DPS Crime Scene Unit in the history of the department,” Kilgore said. “We wanted to make sure everything humanly possible had been done.”

Kilgore said the priority of the investigation yesterday was to determine if anyone else was involved in the shooting.

“No evidence or information has led us to believe that this is anything other than an accidental shooting,” he said. “We’ve taken statements from friends and relatives. We are awaiting autopsy results which will include ballistics. We’re also awaiting results from the different tests fun yesterday at the scene.”

Patterson had been a deputy sheriff with the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Department since Dec. 1, 1991, and was assigned to the Matagorda County Courthouse as a bailiff. Before that, he had worked for the Bay City Police Department for nine years.

Kilgore said the fact that Patterson had been in law enforcement for many years initially made investigators wary of foul play.

“He has worked with the police department and dealt with criminal cases at the court house; initially there were any number of possibilities,” he said. “In law enforcement, you tend to make enemies in the course of professionally doing your job.’

Kilgore said the accident was a shock to all who knew Patterson, and his sympathies were with Patterson’s family.

Royster Funeral Services Slated For This Saturday
“Froggie” Worked For City 47 Years

By David Wolbrueck—The Daily Tribune

Funeral services will be held Saturday for retired long-time city employee A. J. “Froggie” Royster, 71, who died Wednesday in a Houston hospital.

Royster retired Jan. 31, 1985, as city plumbing inspector, after working for the City of Bay City 47 years. He was also retired from the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, after a long tenure with that organization.

In a January 1985 interview for The Daily Tribune, Royster related that he came to Matagorda County from his native Morgan City, La., with his parents when he was 2 years old.

With the exception of a four-year hitch in the Army during World War II and a brief stint as a pipeline worker in Bloomington, Royster lived all his life here.

When Royster came to work for the city in 1937, Bay City’s population was about 6,000 and W. C. Lloyd was mayor. He was hired on a part-time basis because there wasn’t enough work to keep hi busy full time.

“When I first started, work was on and off. I’d come down every day and see if there was anything to do. It wasn’t every day I had something to do,” Royster recalled.

For his labor, he was paid 25 cents an hour. When he  was finished with his city duties, he would earn 20 cents an hour working for the Bay City Gas Co., donated to the city in 1938.

Work then was done primarily by hand. There were no backhoes or excavating machines to dig the trenches for sewer and water lines.

Longtime city and gas company employees still recall that Royster knew the location of every gas line in the city and was often…[end of article missing]
