Bay City Youth Accidentally Shot Near Here Sunday – Ernest Randolph Hogg

Ernest Randolph Hogg, 13-year-old youth from Bay City, was accidentally killed by a shot gun blast around 11 a. m. Sunday near Palacios.

Randolph and a younger cousin, Roy Lee Hogg, 10, of Palacios, were playing at the home of their grandfather, E. B. Hogg, five miles north of Palacios when the accident happened. Mr. and Mrs. Hogg had gone to church leaving the two boys at home by themselves.

The two youths entered the Hogg garage and discovered a 12-gauge single barrel shot gun lying in the cab of a pick-up truck belonging to their grandfather.

The younger youth climbed into the truck on the driver’s side and handed the gun, barrel first, to Randolph, who was standing beside the truck on the ground, according to Justice of the Peace G. R. Halliday.

As Randolph took the gun it went off sending a full load into the boy’s right upper chest, Deputy Sheriff E. T. Miller said. Roy Lee said he didn’t know the gun was loaded, Miller continues.

After the boy had been shot, Roy Lee ran half a mile to where his father, Leroy Hogg, was fishing. Mr. Hogg was the first man to reach the scene, Justice Halliday stated.

Justice Halliday returned a verdict of accidentally death.

Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church in Bay City, with the Rev. W. W. Conerly officiating. Burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
