Funeral Services For H. G. Gilmore, 59, To Be Held Today

Funeral services for H. G. Gilmore, 59, well-known Matagorda County Stockman, will be held Thursday morning at the First Methodist Church in Bay City with the Rev. Mouzon Bass of Bay City and Dr. Harry V. Rankin of Bryan officiating.

Mr. Gilmore died suddenly at his home Tuesday from a heart attack.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mae Gilmore; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Baker; a granddaughter, Miss Theresa LeTulle, all of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Gerald Gibson of Houston and Mrs. Ibby McCreary of El Paso; two brothers, Hugh Gilmore of Newgulf, and Jim Gilmore of San Antonio.

Mae Gilmore

Mrs. Mae Gilmore, 87, of Bay City died April 2 at the Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include: daughter, Mrs. Margaret Gilmore Seerden of Bay City; sister, Janie Milner of Bay City; granddaughter, Mrs. L. Brady of Galveston; and great grandchildren, Margaret Karen Brady and Martha Kay Brady both of Galveston. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, at the First United Methodist Church at 4 p. m. with Rev. Merle Waters officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being: Frank Lewis, Ronny Seerden, J. D. Sutherland, Russell Law, Travis Harrison, and Clifford Lee; honorary pallbearers include: Wade Ashcraft, Frank Harrison, Harry Norris, Dr. L. R. Rogers, Francis Savage Sr., Galen M. Savage Sr., Lunn Gilmore, Vernon Harrison, Joe Griffith Sr., F. Parker Robbins, and H. M. Seerden. Services under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Gilmore Death Leaves 2 Charter Church Members – Mae Gilmore

Mrs. Mae Gilmore, who was born in Matagorda County in 1892 and resided here all her life, died April 2 at the age of 87. She was the daughter of pioneer family Mr. and Mrs. Greenberry Savage and the granddaughter of a circuit rider for the Methodist Church who was instrumental in establishing Methodism in the community.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herschel G. Gilmore.

Mrs. Gilmore was born on the Greenberry Savage ranch, south of Bay City.

During her married life she was very active in farming and ranching with her husband and reportedly was very talented in working with the growing flowers.

The life long resident was one of the original members and workers of the Methodist Church in this area. There are now only two of the original members left.

In later years Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore moved into town and established their home prior to his death in 1945. The past few years however she spent living with her daughter and family Mr. and Mrs. Capt. A. Seerden of Bay City.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, at 4 p. m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Merle Waters officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mother Mine - Sarah Alice Golightly

In memory of Mrs. Baxter Golightly who passed away June 23, 1932.

We wish to dedicate this the honor of the sweetest Christian character we have ever known. In our close association with Mother Golightly in the home and in the church. It was an inspiration you seldom felt. Always doing her Christian duty, those who came in touch with this saintly Christian mother was made better in every way. She knew no class as some term it but was always helping those who were in need. Her life should be a mirror for all to see the Christian way of living. The world is better for her association with those to whom she came in contact. Some will say Sister Golightly has passed to her reward but we would go a little farther and say Mother Golightly has gone home to her reward. In saying this we mean that she was a mother to us in more ways than one. She aided us in many ways that we could not repay but we know she did it as a loving gift of her never failing wish to help in time of need. We will miss her and it grieves us to know we could not help in some little way to relieve her suffering.

We submit to God’s will and hope that some day we may meet her and tell her how much we loved her for the good she did while here. The church will miss her and no one can ever take her place. The…Christian acts will be missed each Lord’s day. We would not ask for Mother to return but trust that her life while here will be a budding star that may lead many to a better life in the future. She is only gone in the body, her spirit will always be with us.

As a comfort to her children we would say only live as Mother would have you do and all will meet her some day. We may grieve but our loss is her gain as she has no troubles to bear and has met with loved ones gone before and to wait for others to follow. Our prayer is may we try to emulate her life and receive the great reward that is hers.—Dr. R. M. Harkey and wife.

Eaton Grisham

Eaton Grisham, 81, of the Cedar Lane area, was pronounced dead at the Matagorda General Hospital April 14. Survivors include: two sons, Richard Eaton Grisham and James H. Grisham both of Bay City; two brothers, Grayson and Harold of Hondo; four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Port of Edinburg, Mrs. Violet Morehead of Angleton, Mrs. Thelma Bridges of Hondo, and Mrs. Marjorie Savage of Bay City; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, at 10:30 a. m. at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Cochran officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being: Glenn Robertson, Don Ross, Wilson Bevers, John Henry Burkett, Ray Horton, and Clarence Fothergill; honorary pallbearers include: M. T. Walker, Cecil Pruett, and E. P. Cross. Services under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Cedar Lane Rancher Dies – Eaton Grisham

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, for long-time Cedar Lane resident Eaton Grisham, who died Saturday.

Grisham, 81, had been taken from his home by ambulance to Matagorda General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He had been an active farmer and rancher up until his death.

Grisham had been a resident of the Cedar Lane area all his life and he was very active in the community.

He was also a deacon in the Cedar Lane Baptist Church.

A charter member of the Soil & Water Conservation District Association, Grisham was named the ‘outstanding cattleman’ in Matagorda County for 1965.

Services will be held at 10:30 a. m. at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church and interment will follow at the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Gertrude Matthews Grisham, 80, of Cedar Lane died May 22 at her residence. Survivors include: husband, Eaton Grisham of Cedar Lane; two sons, Richard and James Grisham of Cedar Lane; brother, James S. Matthews of Bay City; sister, Madge M. Estill of Cedar Lane; five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 24, at 10 a. m. at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Cochran officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being: Roy Griffith, Rodney Matthews, Glen Robertson, Don Ross, Wilson Bevers, John Henry Burkett, Tom Barrington, and George Ratliff. Caney Pioneer Dies - Gertrude Matthews Grisham

Gertrude Matthes Grisham died in her home last night, three miles from the site of her birth 81 years ago.

Mrs. Grisham was a member of a pioneer Texas family. Her great grandfather, Isaac Van Dorn, came to Texas during the 1820’s and was the sheriff of Matagorda County, elected in 1837 after the Texas Revolution. Her great, great grandfather, Martin Palmer, was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Her parents, Rodney Van Dorn and Gertrude Green Matthews settled on the large plantation, now called Caney, seven miles southeast of Bay City.

She began her education in a one room school house, located at the Caney (Matthews) Cemetery. The site was also used as a church.

Among the many organizations claiming her loyal support were the Cedar Lane Baptist Church, the Matagorda County Historical Society, the Mary Rolph Chapter of DAR, Cradle of Texas Chapter of DRT, Captain E. S. Rugeley Chapter of UDC and Cedar Lane Home Demonstration Club.

Mrs. Violet Grisham, 56, of Bay City died July 30 at the Matagorda General Hospital. She had been a resident of this community for 52 years. Survivors include: husband, Richard E. Grisham of Bay City; daughters, Mrs. Sharon Freeman of Sargent and Mrs. Nelda Hodges of Bryan; brothers, Harmon Weldon of Lufkin and Kenneth Weldon of Waco; sisters, Mrs. Christine Bridges of Elkhart and Mrs. Joan Wood of Pasadena. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 31, at 2:30 p. m. at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Cochran officiating. Interment will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being: John Henry Burkett, Don Ross, Glenn Robertson, Cecil Pruitt, Ray Horton, M. T. Walker, Clarence Fothergill, and Wilson Beavers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Cedar Lane Baptist Church. Services under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Mr. Marian A. Guy, age 53 years, 19 days passed away at the family residence at Ashwood Monday night. Mr. Guy is survived by his wife, Mrs. M. A. Guy, two sons, Mr. W. C. Guy of Ashwood, Mr. Pat Guy of Baytown; one daughter, Mrs. C. D. Penland of Conroe, Texas, and five brothers and two sisters in Alabama. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mary E. Hack

Mrs. Mary Hack Killed Instantly Saturday Midnight at Her Home
H. O. Hack in Hospital Suffering From Gun Wounds

Mrs. Mary Hack was shot to death here Saturday about midnight or early Sunday morning and her brother-in-law, with whom she lived in a tent at Avenue I and 14^th Street, was hospitalized from gun wounds from a shotgun and a .38 caliber pistol.

Hack’s condition is still critical.

According to one neighbor, who asked that his name be withheld, he had heard very loud talking between Mrs. Hack and her brother-in-law and then he heard two shots inside the tent and saw someone fire two more shots into the street. He called the officers and when they arrived Mrs. Hack was lying between two beds in the rear of the tent and Hack was lying near the front of the tent. She was dead from two pistol wounds, one in her left side and one that went through her neck. Hack had been shot once with a shotgun and once with a .38 caliber pistol. Both weapons, the .38 caliber pistol and the 12-gauge shotgun were found at the scene of the shooting.

No charges have yet been filed. According to some reports, Hack’s pistol wound was self-inflicted. There are different versions of this and also different versions of the shotgun wound to Hack.

When this reporter went to the scene of the shooting early Sunday morning, Officers Head, DeWolfe and McWhorter were investigating the crime, but they were unable then to determine just what had occurred but at that time they were of the opinion that it was murder and attempted suicide. Further investigation may or may not alter this opinion.

Mrs. Hack is survived by one son, William Poole of Bay City; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hack, also of Bay City; one sister, Mrs. Katie Mach of Houston; two brothers, F. C. McIntyre of Houston and Robert McIntyre of Waller.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home with the Rev. M. A. Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. Hack were held Monday at the Matchett-Newman Funeral Home with the Rev. M. A. Marshall officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, William Poole of Bay City; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hack of Bay City; a sister, Mrs. Katie Mach of Houston; two brothers, F. C. McIntyre of Houston and Robert McIntyre of Waller.

Dolores L. Hagaman

Final Rites Held Here Sunday For Infant Daughter – Dolores Lorraine Hagaman

Final rites were held Sunday from the chapel at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home for Dolores Lorraine Hagaman of Bay City, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hagaman.

Born November 24, 1953, little Dolores passed away at Matagorda General Hospital December 5. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery, with Father C. J. Martin officiating.  In charge of arrangements was Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Surviving are the parents.

Samuel John Hagaman
December 24, 1924 – August 3, 2013

Samuel John Hagaman, 88, of Bay City passed away August 3, 2013.

He was born December 24, 1924 in Bay City, Texas to the late Oyer Robert Hagaman and Mary McPeak Hagaman.

Sam was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, retired from Stark in West Columbia after 35 years and was a member of Pipefitters Local 211 Union for 65 years.

He was preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Delores Hagaman; brothers, Leo, Lawrence, Louis and O. R.; and sisters, Dorothy, Ruth and Sunshine.

Survivors include: his wife of 61 years, Alice Hagaman; daughter, Margaret Sherrill and husband Alan of Bay City; sons, Louis Rogers Hagaman of Round Rock and Daniel Oyer Hagaman and wife Sharon of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, Samantha Sherrill Marshall and husband Chad of Madisonville, LA, Todd Alan Sherrill and wife Misty of Needville, Heather Hagaman and Philip Hagaman of Grand Forks, ND; and great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Kyle Marshall and Addyson, Brayden and Cassidy Sherrill.

The family received friends and relatives from 4 until 6 p.m., Tuesday with a rosary held at 6:30 p.m., at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Greg Korenek officiating; with a special eulogy by his nephew, Dr. Lee Polk.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Tony Kucera, Billy Owens, Dickie Kovar, Bryan Hill, Philip Hagaman, Todd Sherrill and Chad Marshall.

Funeral services for Chesley Hagaman, 20, of Bay City will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Rev. Nick Novak officiating.  Internment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Hagaman was born April 17, 1978 at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. To the late Samuel Hagaman and Celeste Morgan.  He was an active-duty airman in the U. S. Air Force and a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Hagaman was survived by his mother, grandparents, Alice and Roger Morgan of Marshall, TX, sister, Marguerite Hagaman of Bay City; aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Thresa and Jerry West of Bay City, David Morgan of Colorado, Mark and wife Cindy, Sam and Sarah West, Roger Morgan, Martha Anderson, and Nicole and Cameron.

Hagaman was preceded in death by his father, and grandparents Bertha and Leo Hagaman.

Samuel M. Hagaman

A memorial service for Samuel M. Hagaman, 44, of Beeville will be held 2 p. m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City with the Rev. Dr. Hugh B. Jones Jr. officiating.

Mr. Hagaman was born Feb. 6, 1949 in Bay City to Leo J. and Bertha Genzer Hagaman and died March 6, 1993 at Shohn Hospital in Corpus Christi.

He was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Beeville.

Mr. Hagaman obtained his agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University. He was in the U. S. Air Force from 1977 to 1981, leaving the service as a sergeant. He also earned a degree from Louisiana Tech University.

He worked for the Soil Conservation Service and FmHA in Littlefield. He then moved to Bay City in 1989 and was Matagorda County supervisor until he moved to Beeville in 1991 and became the supervisor for Bee County. He loved his family and the outdoors and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Celeste Hagaman of Beeville; a daughter, Marguerite Hagaman of Beeville; a son, Chesley Hagaman of Beeville, a sister, Teresa West of Bay City; and a brother, James Hagaman of El Maton.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Shirley Fry Haines

Graveside services for Shirley Fry Haines, 88, of Bay City will be held 10 a. m. Thursday at Cedarvale Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Allan C. Anderson officiating. Visitation with the family will be until 9 p. m. today.

Mrs. Haines was born Nov. 3 1904 in Bay City to Elmer Ellsworth Fry and Minnie Westover Fry and she died Dec. 22, 1992 at Burleson County Memorial Hospital in Caldwell.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and worked as a bookkeeper for George R. Brown Lease Service

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette and Joyce Speckman of Chriesman; four grandchildren, Caressa and James Inman of Pleasanton and Luke and Lee Ellen Speckman of New Braunfels; five great-grandchildren, Caressa Fry Inman and Jessica Cade Inman, Burton Palmer Speckman, Katie Speckman and Benjamin Merritt Speckman; a niece, Dorothy Fry Hance of San Benito and a special friend, Neva Bunch of Bay City.

Honorary pallbearers are the Session of the First Presbyterian Church, Aubrey Baker, Frank Craft, James Craft, Robert Craft, Bill Cross, Edward Gibson, Joe Rowland, Carey Smith, Fred Walker and Harry Baldridge.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins Bay City Funeral Home.
