Robert T. Smith Funeral services were held for Matagorda County’s first traffic death of 1953 yesterday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. According to officers’ traffic report, the year’s first auto death was Robert T. Smith, 57, of Boling. Smith died instantly about 7:05 p. m. Friday from a broken neck and internal injuries he sustained when the 1952 Cadillac he was driving crushed him. The accident occurred about five miles south of Bay City, on Highway 60. A former employee of the Texas Gulf Sulfur Company, Smith brushed a pickup truck driven by Dewey Phillips of Vanderbilt. After the collision with the pickup truck, Highway Patrolman W. A. Cowan said that Smith’s heavy car slid 710 feet from the point where it left the pavement. Cowan explained that imprints of the top of Smith’s car clearly indicated that the car rolled over at least four times. Smith’s body was found pinned beneath the car. Evidently he had been thrown clear of the car. The body was discovered under the car where the roof joins the windshield. The Rev. George Lee officiated at the burial which took place at Cedarvale cemetery. Besides his widow, Mrs. Theresa Smith of Boling; Smith is survived by his sons, Robert Thurston, Jr., and Jack of Newgulf; his sister, Mrs. Fred Martin, Houston; his brother, Lonnie D. Smith, Houston; and his mother, Mrs. Nancy Bell Smith of Boling.

Beatrice Socha Death came to Mrs. Beatrice Socha, 57, at 7:20 a. m., Thursday at the Matagorda County General hospital, following an illness there of about one week. Convalescing from a major operation, she seemed to be improving when her condition became suddenly critical, resulting in her passing. Born in Harrisburg, Tex., she had lived in Sargent for about 32 years. For the past eight years she had been supervisor of community canning plants, for three years at Sargent and for the past five years in Bay City. Funeral rites will be held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock from Taylor Bros. Funeral home. Burial will be in Cedarvale cemetery. Mrs. Socha is survived by eight daughters, Mrs. Leona Kocurek of Iago, Tex., Mrs. Louise Pointer of Lake City, Nebr., Mrs. Velma Clements of Sargent, Mrs. Orelia Bradford of Bay City, Mrs. Willie Beaty of Alvin, Mrs. Lillian Graham of Tahoka, Tex., Miss Lenora Socha of Bay City and Miss Jane Socha of Sargent; two sons, Chester of Sargent and Alfred Lee of Bay City; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Barnett of Houston and Mrs. Stella Braunson of Garwood, Tex.; three brothers, Will Chambless of Houston, Lewis Chambless of Orchard, and Ed Chambless of Matagorda.

Elmer James Stacy Funeral arrangements for Elmer James Stacy, 74, of Ingleside, are scheduled for 10 a. m. Friday at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Home chapel in Aransas Pass. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City at 4:30 p. m. Friday. Mr. Stacy was born Sept. 22, 1918 in Aquilla and died Aug. 18, 1993 at his residence. He was a boilermaker for 26 years and a member of Local 577 Corpus Christi. Survivors include the following: his wife, Annie Stacy of Ingleside; a son and daughter-in-law, Elmer Joe and Janine Stacy of Rockport; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Ann and Gordon Kemp of Ingleside; three grandchildren, Bej Svatek, of Palacios, Jay Stacy and Britton Stacy of Arlington; three step-grandsons, Joseph Kemp of Houston, Royce Kemp of Corpus Christi and John Kemp of Houston; four great-granddaughters, Amanda Stacy of Arlington, Stacy, Samantha and Synthia Svatek of Palacios. Numerous cousins and a host of friends also survive. Arrangements by Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes of Aransas Pass.

C. Eston Stansell  Clarence Stansell Buried Here Today Clarence Eston Stansell, 46 years and four months, was buried this afternoon at 3:00 o’clock following his death Friday. H. W. Sargent, pastor of the Bay City Church of Christ, officiated at services today with Earl Vaughn, E. T. Bryant, Clinton Burchfield, Johnnie E. Wright, Irving Miller and C. B. Jeanes as pallbearers. The Bay City Junior were Odd Fellows were honorary pallbearers. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pauline Stansell; three daughters, Dorothy Neal, Anita Faye, and Hazel Yvonne; two sons, Tracy Lee and Orville Eugene Stansell of Van Vleck. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. C. W. Stansell of Bay City; three sisters, Mrs. Stella Ryman of Edinburg, Mrs. Lucille Beene of Kingsville, and Mrs. Hazel Strozier of Bay City; and three brothers, Conley Stansell of Van Vleck, Coleman Stansell of Matagorda and Marvin Stansell of Boling. Mr. Stansell was a member of the Bay City Odd Fellow Lodge. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in charge.

Fred E. Walker 
Fred Walker Fred Walker, 85, of Bay City passed away March 9, 2011. He was born January 19, 1926 in Bay City, TX to the late Thomas Alonzo Walker & Mary Quintilla Hudleston Walker. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 85 years where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee for many years and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. He served his country in the US Army during WWII, in which he was awarded a Purple Heart for a combat wound he received in Germany, and was a life member of Philip H. Parker VFW Post 2438 in Bay City. He joined his mother and sister, Mary Jo Walker, in 1946 at the Southern Seed Store, which later became Walker Seed and Garden Center. The business was originally established in 1917 as the South Texas Seed Company by T. A. Walker. He raised vegetable plants at his home and shipped them all over the United States. In 1926 he started the Southern Seed Store in Bay City, selling vegetable seeds and plants. Fred and his sister continued to operate the business after their mother retired in 1985 until their retirement in 1994. Fred was a very active civic booster in Matagorda County. In 1954 he was voted Bay City Chamber of Commerce’s first Man of the Year. He filmed Bay City Black Cat games from the 1950’s to 1970’s only missing one game in 20 plus years; Leader of Boy Scout Troop 45 since 1946 receiving the Vigil Honor of Order of Arrow in 1955; was a member of the American Legion for 65 years and was in charge of the Learning to Gardening Program at Linnie-Roberts Elementary school for many years. He spent thousands of hours volunteering at the Bay City Birding and Nature Center from the formative years until failing health prevented him from doing so in the last year. He also spent many hours volunteering for the Matagorda County Museum where he was voted outstanding volunteer in both 1992 and 1996. He served on the board of directors of the Main Street Project’s beautification program for several years. He was a committee member for Market Days. He volunteered many years for the Matagorda County Household Hazardous Waste Collection program. He worked for many years on Bay City’s landmark designation effort to preserve historically important buildings. Fred was honored by the Bay City Chamber of Commerce as Volunteer of the Year in 1999, along with his sister Mary Jo, and by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1998 as Matagorda County Volunteer of the Year. Perhaps Fred most important work was as a mentor to countless numbers of Bay City’s young men between the time he returned from WWII and his death. His sisters Dorothy Gertrude Ross and Mary Jo Walker, brother Thomas Alonzo Walker, Jr., niece Jean Anne Ross-Smith, and nephew's wife Linda Walker all preceded him in death. Survivors include three nephews, Doug Walker of Montclair, CA, Allan Ross & wife Sallie of Houston, and Ned Smith of Dallas; two nieces, Bonnie Ross of Houston and Kay Hanggie & husband Bob of Upland, CA. He is also survived by great-nephews and nieces Mary Grega & husband Michael of Washington, DC, Eric Hanggie of Upland, CA, Sam Ross of New York City, Susannah Ross of Houston and Melissa Hanggie of Upland, CA; and beloved care-giver Melissa Krause. Graveside services were 10:00 AM Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City with Rev. Jeff Gantz officiating. Members of the Wesley Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
