Final Rites Are Held Here October 16 For Mrs. Annie L. Sanborn

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie L. Sanborn, 86, were held here last week—October 16—with the Rev. Aubrey C. Maxted officiating.

Mrs. Sanborn had lived in Matagorda County all her life.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ella Taylor; two sons, Raleigh Sanborn and Jim Hawkins; one sister, Mrs. Ed Gibson of Van Vleck.

Raleigh Sanborn

County Pioneer Dies

Raleigh Sanborn, 90, a prominent pioneer rancher of Bay City and Matagorda County died Wednesday.

Services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Milton E. McWilliams officiating.

Mr. Sanborn was born on the family ranch in Matagorda County on Aug. 27, 1895, to John and Annie L. Hardeman Hawkins Sanborn. He resided on the ranch until he was 12 years old. At that time he and his family moved to Bay City so that he and his brother could attend school.

He graduated from Bay City High School as valedictorian of his class in 1915. He attended Colorado University. He began farming and on Dec. 29, 1933, he married Ruby Glasson.

Mr. Sanborn was a major producer of registered Brahman cattle in the 1950s and was awarded the Bay City Chamber of Commerce Cattleman of the Year Award in 1969.

Raleigh Sanborn

Funeral services for Raleigh Sanborn, 90, of Bay City, will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Milton McWilliams officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Sanborn was born Aug. 27, 1895, in Matagorda County, Texas, and died at Matagorda House.

A lifelong resident of Matagorda County, he was a prominent pioneer rancher of Bay City. He was a major producer of registered Brahman cattle in the 1950s and was awarded the Bay City Chamber of Commerce Cattleman of the Year Award in 1969.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Glasson Sanborn of Bay City; a sister, Ella Hawkins Taylor of Bay City; two nieces, Frances Taylor Steves and Janie E. McCormick, both of Bay City; two nephews, Raleigh Sanborn Williamson of Tucson, Ariz., and Frank Hawkins of Bay City; and a cousin, Margaret Jordan of Van Vleck.

Pallbearers include E. M. Huitt Jr., I. M. Rayburn, Billy Jo Bullard, Frank Hawkins, Walter Hamilton and George Ratliff.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Ruby Sanborn

Ruby Glosson Sanborn

Funeral services for Ruby Glosson Sanborn, 87, of Bay City will be held 4 p. m. today at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Milton McWilliams Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanborn was born Dec. 3, 1898, in Fort Worth to Hugh and Bridgett Mansfield Glosson and died Aug. 20, 1986, at Matagorda House, Bay City.

A resident of Bay City since 1930, she was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She founded the Junior Young Peoples Service League, was a member of Kinsolving, helped to start the church’s Thrift House and was a Pink Lady at Matagorda General Hospital. She was a life member of the Bay City Study Club and the Bay City Book Review Club.

Survivors include a sister, Jane Williamson of Bay City; a niece, Janie McCormick of Bay City; a nephew, Raleigh Williamson of Fort Worth; a great-niece, Lauren Williamson and a great nephew, Chad Williamson.

Pallbearers include Billy Bullard, Walter Hamilton, Fred Holub, Jimmy Everett, E. M. Huitt, Jr. and Glen White.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Sanborn, on Nov. 13, 1985.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Melvin W. Sander

Melvin W. Sander, 34, Buried Thursday In Cedarvale Cemetery

Funeral services for Melvin W. Sander, 34, who died after a short illness in Victoria, were held from Matchett-Newman Funeral Home Thursday afternoon.

Pallbearers were John H. Wallace, R. B. Cobb, J. A. Slaughter, all of Victoria, James Porter of Edna, James Birkner of Bay City, and Jimmy Hayes of Newgulf.

The Rev. Raymond Wilson of the Victoria Methodist Church and the Rev. W. W. Hawthorne of the First Methodist Church in Bay City officiated and burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Sander, an employee of Central Power and Light Company, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bobbie Porter Sander; two daughters, Joan and Joyce; his father, John Sander of Bellville; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Hill of Bellville and Mrs. Max Schaffner of Kenedy.

Funeral Services Are Held For Stanley Saunders

Funeral services were held last week for Stanley A. Saunders, 45, who died Monday, January 6, after a short illness.

Surviving Mr. Saunders are his mother, Mrs. Mary B. Saunders of El Maton, two sisters, Mrs. J. A. Petty of San Marcos and Mrs. Frank King of Collegeport; three brothers, Frank, George and Malcom.

Burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of the Walker-Matchett Funeral Home.

Austin Lawrence Savage

Funeral services for Mr. Austin Lawrence Savage, 85, of Bay City were scheduled for Oct. 8, 1983 at St. Marks Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Hoster officiating.

Interment was in the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Savage was born March 17, 1898 in Matagorda. He died Oct. 5 at Caney Valley Hospital in Wharton. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, a World War II veteran, Masonic Lodge member and a retiree from Texas Gulf Inc.

Survivors include: two daughters, Fay Rudin Tripulas of Wharton and Vivian Rudin Fisher of Sweeny; sister, Cottie Smith of Sargent; one niece, Carmen Lockwood of Albuquerque, N. M.; four nephews, Murry and Savage Watkins of Matagorda, Jack Ellerkamp of Bay City and G. G. Savage, Jr. of Bay City; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Gavender Savage, who died July 23, 1983.

Pallbearers are G. G. Savage Jr., Jack Ellerkamp, Billy Francis and Bobby Watkins, Pete Fisher and Gus Tripulas.

Arrangements were made with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

On Saturday, Bay City resident Susie Gavender Savage, 81, died in her home.

She is survived by her husband, Austin L. Savage of the family home; daughters, Fay Rudin Tripulas of Wharton and Vivian Rudin Fisher of Sweeny; sisters, Elizabeth Herreth and Maggie Cadenhead of Bay City; one brother, Walter Gavender of Bay City and nine grandchildren. Savage was preceded in death by two sons, Hans Robert Rudin Jr., and Truman Willis Rudin.

Savage was born in Wadsworth, Texas on August 7, 1901 and was the daughter of Annie Bunk and Alex Gavender.

Services were scheduled for 4 p. m. Monday with the Rev. Milton McWilliams officiating in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Interment was to take place in Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers included David Tripulas, John McDonald, Robert Rudin, Daniel Walker, Neal Farley, Richard Fisher and Robert Fisher.

Taylor Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Zalie Austin Schill

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Zalie Austin Schill, 89, of Dallas and a former resident of Bay City, 2 p. m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Milton McWilliams of St. Mark’s Church. Schill died April 3 in Dallas.

Surviving her is a sister, Miss Julia Posey of Houston and two nieces; Mrs. Robert Insall of Houston and Mrs. Sophie Burkhart of Bay City. Burial will follow the services at Cedarvale Cemetery. The services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Della June Jurek Schneider

Della June Jurek Schneider, 82, of Bay City died June 8, 2002, at the Hospice at Texas Medical Center in Houston. She was born June 3, 1920 in Bay City to the late Steve and Liddie Marie Karasek Jurek. Mrs. Schneider was a life long resident of Bay City and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. On October 10, 1938, Della married Edgar Schneider who preceded her in death on May 26, 2000.

Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice Kopnicky and fiance Martin Hajak and Linda and Randy Kelley, all of Bay City; sisters, Lillie Bohuslav of Markham, Bertha Vondereau of Wharton, and Lena Hill of Boling; brother, Hubert Jurek of Pasadena; five grandchildren, Kade Kopnicky of Bay City, Kent and Cole Kopnicky of Brenham, Amanda and Heath Kelley of Bay City. In addition to her parents and brother, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Schneider; sister, Johnnie Mae Myers, brothers, John, Victor, Henry, and Eddie Jurek; and nephew, Scott Martin Vondereau.

Funeral services will be a 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kade, Kent and Kole Kopnicky and Heath Kelley; nephews: Larry and Gary Hill, Tommy Page, Phil Vonderveau, and Johnny Miska. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Henry Jurek, Jr., and Glenn Jurek.

Edgar Louis Frank Schneider

Edgar Louis Frank Schneider, 85, of Bay City, passed away at his residence on Friday, May 26, 2000.

He was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Shiner, Tex. to Alfred Emil Schneider and Alma Josephine Meier Schneider.

He was a resident of Matagorda County since 1935 and, in 1938, he married Della June Jurek in Wharton, Tex.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of Matagorda Farmer’s Co-Op and a member of the Executive Board of Rice Belt Dryers, Inc.

He was a rice farmer for 36 years and a rancher. In 1973, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Rice Farmer of the Year Award.

He is survived by: his wife, Della Jurek Schneider of Bay City; by his daughters, Janice Kopnicky and special friend Martin Hajek of Bay City, and Linda Kelley and husband, Randy, of Bay City; by his sisters, Ruby Boettcher of Pasadena and Palacios, and Olga Kusak of Needville; and by his brothers, Weldon Schneider of Conroe, Alfred Schneider of Palacios, Herbert John Schneider of Port Lavaca, and Dickie Schneider of Palacios.

He also is survived by his grandchildren, Kade, Kent and Kole Kopnicky, and Amanda and Heath Kelley, all of Bay City, and by his best friend, Johnnie Hahn of Bay City.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jean Schneider, by his parents, by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating.

Pallbearers will be Ed Holloway, Edward Kelley, Johnnie Hahn, Rusty Williams, Martin Hajek, Larry Hill and Ralph Cole. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Baker, F. J. Williams and Ralph Thompson.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City (979) 245-4613.

Jean Schneider

Rites For Child Accident Victim Held Here Sunday

Funeral services for Jean Schneider, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Schneider of Bay City, were held from the First Presbyterian Church Sunday.

Little Jean was accidentally run over by an automobile Saturday morning and died in a hospital early that afternoon.

Survivors besides her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Schneider of Palacios and Mr. and Mrs. John Spurny of Boling, paternal and maternal grandparents of the child.

Taylor Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.
