Clayton Odell Mardis, 78, of Bay City, passed away September 20, 1995, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born October 23, 1916, in Preston, Mississippi to Levi A. and Ruby Prince Mardis.

 

He was the founder of Mardis Auto Parts, Inc. in Bay City and a member of the Methodist Church. He had been a resident of Bay City since 1962. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann Teer Mardis of Bay City; by two daughters and a son-in-law, Ruby and Bill Collier of Lake Jackson and Phyllis Marks of Colorado Springs, Colorado; by a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Bobbie Mardis of Bay City; by a sister, Elizabeth Crocker of Auburn, Alabama; by two brothers, Melvin Mardis and Jim Mardis both of Meridian, Mississippi; grandchildren and their spouses, Shannon and Kay Beth Marks, Renee’ and Adrian Hartsfield, Mike and Judy Mardis, Anita and Steve Rickey, Jim and Kim Gary, Tracy and Roger Stakely, and Kelly and Brian Collier; and by twelve great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, September 23, 1995, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Horace McMillan officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

 

Pallbearers include Mike Mardis, Adrian Hartsfield, Steve Rickey, Jim Gary, Robert Stakely, and Brian Collier.

Annie M. (Ann) Mardis , 92, of Bay City passed away February 26th at the Matagorda House. She was born July 26, 1919 in Preston, Mississippi to Frances & Virgil Teer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother & her husband of 61 years C. O. Mardis whom she has missed so much.

She is survived by her 3 children, Ruby Collier & her husband Bill of Lake Jackson, her son Gerald & his wife Bobbie of Bay City and Phyllis Marks of Parker, Colorado; grandchildren, Anita Rickey (Steve), Renee Mardis, Kim Gary (Jim), Mike Mardis (Judy), Tracy Steakley (Roger), Kelley Collier (Brian), Shanon Marks, Kay Beth Marks; and 17 great-grandchildren. Ann had many friends with Flo Dreher & Martha Jane Wheat being very precious to her.

Ann was a member of the First United Methodist Church & active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class for many years.

She loved to work in her yard, read, & travel. She was a lifetime member of the Bay City Book Review Club.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make your donations to your charity or Women’s Crisis Center, The Nature Center or Hospice.

A Prayer Service for Johnny M. Martinez, 63, of Markham, will be at 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 7, 1998, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 8, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Rev. Melvin Ryman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

 

Martinez died October 5 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was born June 24, 1935, in McFadden, Texas, to the late Leon Martinez, Sr. and Ramona Mata Martinez. He was a member of the Word of Life Church in Wadsworth and a resident of Markham for the past 20 years.

 

Martinez is survived by: his wife, Mary G. Martinez of Markham; mother, Ramona Martinez of Cuero; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Scott King of Blessing, Linda and Marty Lee of Nacogdoches; sons and a daughter-in-law, Ernest J. and Crystal Martinez of Fort Hood, and John A. “Tony” Martinez of Bay City; sister, Julia Martinez of Cuero; brothers, Leon Martinez, Jr. and Abel Martinez, both of Victoria, Jesus M. Martinez of Orange Grove, Texas, Danny, Tomas, and Robert Martinez, all of Brenham, Lupe Martinez of Hearne, Texas, and Richard Martinez of Bryan; grandchildren, Crystal Patterson and husband John, Jessica Flynn and husband Sam, Rachel Martinez, Ernest Martinez, Jr., Justin King, and Christopher Martinez; and great grandchild, Evan Flynn.

Ruth May Heidrich Miller
June 22, 1935 – May 25, 1996

Ruth May Miller, 60, of Bay City, passed away Saturday, May 25, 1996, at the Legacy. She was born June 22, 1935, in Hallettsville, Lavaca County, Texas to Willie Albin and Elizabeth Dorthy Neubauer Heidrich.

She married Grant Miller on March 23, 1958. She was a resident of Bay City for the past 41 years and a member of the Bay City Baptist Church.

She is survived by: her husband, Grant Miller of Bay City; a daughter, Gerlean Marie Miller Jackson of Wharton; a son, David Wayne Miller of Sweeny; two sisters, Nita Green of Brownwood and Vera Allgood of Bennington, Oklahoma; and, by three brothers, Elton Heidrich of Sturgis, Kentucky, Alvin Heidrich of Iowa Park, Texas, and Linton “Buddy” Heidrich of Sweeny. She is also survived by: three grandchildren, Jason, Michelle and Neal, all of Wharton; by seventeen nieces and nineteen nephews. She was preceded in death by: her father, Willie Albin Heidrich in 1955; her mother, Elizabeth Heidrich in 1989; and, two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Paul Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Donald Clay Murphy
August 21, 1928 – May 2, 1998

Funeral services for Donald C. Murphy, 69, of Bay City, were 4:00 PM Monday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiated. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Murphy died May 2 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born August 21, 1928, in South Bend, Indiana to the late John Donald and Mae Krallman Murphy.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3070 in Bay City, a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army, a resident of Bay City since 1968, and a retired pharmaceutical salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie Murphy of Bay City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Doug Matthes of Bay City and Debra and Pat Davis of Conroe; step-sister, Becky Campbell of Houston; three brothers, Richard Murphy of Austin, Minnesota, Robert Murphy of Houston, and David Murphy of Leggett, Texas; five grandchildren, Shelly Matthes Grimes, Kristy Matthes, Taylor Matthes, Jeffrey Harrington and Jill Harrington.

Murphy was preceded in death by: his sister, Patricia Carter, and stepmother, Mary Murphy.

Pallbearers were Sam Maglitto, Paul Scheel, Bill Bennett, Braulio “Shorty” Muniz, Gus Svatek, and Pat Centilli. Chloe Rugeley Pounds
June 5, 1939 - Nov. 10, 2009

Chloe Rugeley Pounds went to be with her lord during the night on Tuesday, the 10th of November, in Houston, TX. She peacefully passed away at 70 years of age, in the company of her son. Chloe was known for her enduring and kind spirit, faith and devotion, loyalty, generosity, friendship and unconditional love.

She was born to William and Matilda Rugeley, in Bay City, TX. After graduating from University of Texas, Chloe married, raised a son, was a long-term member of First Presbyterian Church in Houston and Bay City. She was active with her church circle, operated her ranch, and participated in charities and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, PEO, Stephen Ministry and the Texas Cattle Raisers Association.

She is survived by her son, Wade Rugeley Pounds and wife Marla. Her first grandchild is expected March of 2010.

Friends and family are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 12th of November, at Earthman Funeral Home, 8303 Katy Freeway in Houston. The memorial service is to be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, the 13th of November, at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston. A graveside service will follow via escorted cortege to Cedarvale Cemetery on Golden Avenue in Bay City.

William Casseday Rucker

William Casseday “Poppa Cass” Rucker was born June 24, 1908 in Waco, Texas. He died July 26, 1995 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife of 81 years, Gladys Hardy Rucker. Services are scheduled for 2:00 p. m. Saturday, July 29, 1995 at the First United Methodist Church in Bay City.

He had been a resident of Bay City since 1974 after retirement from TEC as manager of their Port Arthur Offices. He had participated in a wide number of community activities, however, he was best known for his support of the Bay City Athletic Program having been voted Bay City’s outstanding athletic supporter.

He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and with his wife helped to establish the Friendship Sunday School Class. Space does not allow for mention of all of the many honors that he had received or the many activities that he had supported especially in Boy Scouting prior to coming to Bay City.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and William Bell of Bay City; Elizabeth and Robert Lloyd of Austin; one son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Carol Lyne Rucker of Portales, New Mexico; brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Geneva Rucker of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister and brother-in-law, Corine and Frank Williams of Los Angeles, California; plus numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and relatives. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Gladys Anita Hardy Rucker, 79, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 p. m. to 9 p. m. Wednesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Mrs. Rucker was born Feb. 6, 1911, to Henry Newton and Molly B. Mariner Hardy in Hill County and died Aug. 13, 1990, at Hermann Hospital in Houston.

She was a resident of Bay City since 1973 and a former resident of Groves. She was also a member of the First United Methodist church in Bay City.

Survivors include her husband, William Casseday Rucker of Bay City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita Marie and William Mathew Bell of Bay City and Elizabeth and Robert H. Lloyd of Austin; a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick C. and Karyl Rucker of Portales, N. M.; one sister, Essie Marie Roos of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Bobby Lloyd, Bill Bell Jr., Tim Bell, Miles Rucker, Steve Howerton, Ben Long and George Durett.

Otis Russell, 63, died Tuesday, September 5 at the Diagnostic Hospital in Houston. He was born December 1, 1914 and was a resident of Bay City for 43 years. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Russell of Bay City, his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Russell of Lake Jackson, two daughters, Mrs. Clifford Harvey of Bay City and Mrs. Robert Richards of Bryan, four sisters, Mrs. Eddie Pearcy of College Station, Mrs. Ned Chesser of Oyster Creek, Mrs. Jessie Cobb of Beaumont, and Mrs. Betty Johnson of Lake Jackson, two brothers, Tom and Wendell Russell of Winnie, two granddaughters, and two grandsons. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 3:00 p. m. Thursday, September 7. Rev. Leslie LeGrande and Merle S. Waters officiating. Interment at Cedarvale Cemetery. Bay City Loses Petroleum And Community Leader Developer

One of Bay City’s outstanding citizens; Otis Russell died at age 63, in Houston at Diagnostic Hospital, September 5, at 1:45 P. M., following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 7, at 3 P. M. at The First United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. S. M. Waters, assisted by Rev. Leslie LeGrand of Houston. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Russell’s survivors are: his wife, Evelyn, of Bay City; two daughters: Mrs. Clifford Harvey of Bay City, and Mrs. Robert Richards, of Bryan; 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons; his mother: Mrs. Elizabeth Russell of Lake Jackson; 2 brothers, and four sisters.

He had been a resident of Bay City since 1935, coming here with the Sun Oil Company. Then, in 1946, he established his own drilling and production business. He sold the contractor division of his business in 1974, but had remained in the production business, still in operation.

Well known in oil and gas circles, his success in drilling and producing both oil and gas has been recognized throughout the entire state. Accomplishments of his drilling and production efforts have been the fields in Clemville, Magnet Withers, West Columbia, Damon, Lissie, and the New Waverly Field which he reopened in 1975.

Russell was active as a family man, in service to his church, The First Methodist Church, and to his community. At church, he served as Administrator of the Board of Stewards, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of Trustees, Chairman of the Building Committee, Past Chairman and present member of the Finance Committee, and Committee Chairman of Pastor-Parish Relations. He was active in all of his capacities in the church until his recent illness.

He was a member of Texas Independent Producer & Royalty Owners Association, a member of the Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association, a member of the Gulf Coast Shrine for 20 years and a member of the Houston Club. In all of these organizations he was recognized for outstanding work.

In former positions, locally, he has been President of the Chamber of Commerce; President and charter member of the Bay City Country Club; Board Member of the Bay City Tax Payers Association; Bay City Chamber of Commerce Industrial Foundation member, serving in this capacity since the foundation was organized; Rotarian for 40 years; Masonic A. F. & A. M. Lodge No. 865 for 36 years; and a Director of the Bay City Bank & Trust Company.

Joe R. Schmerber

Funeral services for Joe R. Schmerber, 80, of Galveston will be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of Bay City with the Rev. Bill Leedicker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Schmerber was born Nov. 18, 1905, in Matagorda, Texas, to Johnny Moran and Elizabeth Vogg Schmerber and died April 19, 1986, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Galveston.

He spent his youth in Matagorda and Gulf. After graduating from Gulf High School, he went to business college in San Antonio. After college he went to Thurber, Texas, where he was employed by Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Co. He and his wife, Thelma, spent their married life in the Fort Worth-Dallas area until his retirement in 1971. In 1971 they moved to Bay City to be near family and friends.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Ruby Schmerber of Bay City and Cleo Schmerber of Needville; a brother-in-law, Dewey Ruth of Houston, and several nieces and nephews who all knew him as “Uncle Joe.”

Pallbearers include Billy Frank Bell, Donald M. “Bubba” Bell Jr., Kenneth Jinks, Herman “Chip” Hartsfield and Gary Middleton. Honorary pallbearers include A. J. Richie and Cass Rucker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Thomas Schmerber in 1981.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Schmerber died October 28, 1981 at Matagorda General Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Joe R. Schmerber of Bay City; brother of the late John L. Thomas of Lubbock; number of nieces and nephews.

Schmerber was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow services at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Services for Earl Eugene Stephens, 50, of Bay City will be held July 7 at 10 a. m. at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.

Stephens died July 4 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston.

He is survived by his wife Nora Stephens of Bay City; his daughter, Teresa Dell Reeder of Bay City; his son Earl Eugene Stephens Jr. of Bay City; his sister Molly May of Markham; his brothers James Stephens of Van Vleck, Claude Stephens of Bay City, Johnnie Stephens of Carlsbad, Texas, and W. C. Stephens of New Braunfels; and by his numerous nieces and nephews.

Stephens served in the U. S. Air Force in Korea.

Following the services, burial will take place at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Charles E. “Ted” Strozier

Funeral services for Charles E. “Ted” Strozier, 76, of Bay City will be held 10 a. m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Strozier was born Feb. 10, 1013, in Chatham, La., to James and Elmer Thomas Manning and died Oct. 21, 1989, at Methodist Hospital, Houston.

He retired from Mobile Oil Co. as a field foreman with 40 years service and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, 100 Club of Matagorda County, Sheriff Association of Texas and American Legion Post 649.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Strozier of Bay City; two brothers, Hardy Strozier of Shreveport, La., and Henry Strozier of Taylor, La.; two sisters, Vira Taylor of Chatham, La., and Lucy Graves of Shreveport; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Michael Brown, Gerald Brown, Dickie Elkins, Charles Coney, Bill Huebner, Sidney Schwartz, John Lynch and Bill Acuiff.

Kathleen Erna Sanford Strozier
Aug. 18, 1916 - March 18, 2010

Kathleen Erna Sanford Strozier, 90, of Bay City passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010 at her residence.

Kathleen was born on August 18, 1916 in Non, Oklahoma, the middle child of Lorena Levina and Thomas Jefferson Sanford.

From an early age Kathleen knew she wanted to teach so she received a BS degree from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and in 1950 she received a Masters Degree from the University of Houston. She taught school in Oklahoma, California and Texas. While in Oklahoma, she met Ted (C.E.) Strozier and they were married in Durant, Oklahoma on November 12, 1938. They were married for 50 years until he passed away on October 21, 1989 in Bay City. Ted’s service in the Navy took the couple to California and in 1947 Ted took a job with Mobil Oil Company that sent him to Bay City. Kathleen taught in several school districts including Edna, Wharton, Van Vleck and Bay City. She was a dedicated teacher and dearly loved her students and her students loved her kindness, sense of humor and generosity. She was also active in many professional organizations. She was a lifetime member of TSTA serving as treasurer of district 111for nine years and also serving as a building representative for many years. She was a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association serving as a delegate to the NEA convention for six years. She used her love of Math to serve as a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and on the local chapter of the Gulf Coast Math Council. She also served her community as a member of the Bay City Pilot Club and was a charter member and past president of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She loved to travel and enjoyed going places with her niece, DiAnn. She loved to visit Alaska, Washington D.C., Disney World, and especially Las Vegas, where she won several jack pots playing slot machines. She also loved gardening and raising tomatoes. She was a member of The First Baptist Church of Bay City. She loved God, her country, her family and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Strozier and her parents.

She is survived by: her nieces, DiAnn Sanford of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Eldona Cronemeyer and her husband Donald of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and by her great nieces, DawnRenee Cronemeyer of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Holly Cronemeyer of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She is also survived by: great-great nieces, Alexis Cronemeyer and Randi King of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and great-great nephews, Isaac Cronemeyer and Noak King of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Visitation for Kathleen will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Bay City Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr Michael Zimmerman officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Allen Cumbie, attorney, Sydney Schwartz, CPA, Jay Tillmon all of Bay City and also Jackie Hooper and Rev. Don Storey of Houston Hospice.

Services are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

Agnes Mae Welfel

Services were held for Mrs. Agnes Mae Welfel, 69, of Bay City, 11 a. m. today (Thursday) at Taylor Brothers Chapel.

Officiating at the services was the Rev. Chester Sassman.

Welfel died January 25, 1983 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Earl Dibbern of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, George and Dorothy Reckaway of Markham; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial followed services at Cedarvale Cemetery.
