Kermit S. Gideon Sr.

Funeral services for Kermit S. Gideon Sr., 80, of Palacios will be held 2 p. m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Palacios with the Rev. Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Burial to follow in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Gideon was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Markham to George S. and Appaloma Calloway Gideon and died March 19, 1990, at Wagner General Hospital, Palacios.

He was a teacher with the Palacios Independent School District for 15 years and a member of First United Methodist Church of Palacios.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Ruth Gilbert Gideon of Palacios; a daughter, Eileen Eikenberg of San Antonio; a son, Kermit Gideon Jr. of Spring; a sister, Maurine McNeil of Raymondville, Texas; a brother, George Stanley Gideon of Houston; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.

Grace Ruth Gilbert Gideon

Grace Ruth Gilbert Gideon, 98, passed away July 6, 2018.  She lived in Palacios, Texas for 57 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and worked as the school nurse for Palacios Independent School District for over 20 years. 

Grace is preceded in death by her parents, Eva Amanda and John Porter Gilbert; husband, Kermit S. Gideon Sr.; brothers, John and Calvin; and sisters, Dorothy and Myrtle. 

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kermit S. Gideon Jr. and Ruth, and Eileen Eikenberg and Charles; six grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and her youngest sister, Eva Knight.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday July 11, 2018 at Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, Texas.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Palacios.

Lawrence Hagaman & Mary Elizabeth Hagaman

Lawrence Hagaman

Funeral services for Lawrence Hagaman, 65, of West Columbia will be held 11 a. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with Monsignor James Brunner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

A rosary was said at 7 p. m. Wednesday.

Mr. Hagaman was born March 29, 1927 in Bay City to Oyer Robert and Mary Josephine Hagaman Sr. and died May 12, 1992 at his home.

He was retired from Phillips Petroleum after 37 years service. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 503 and the Catholic church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hagaman of West Columbia; a daughter, Sue Whitt of West Columbia; two sons, Mike Hagaman of Brazoria and Billy Wooderson of West Columbia; three sisters, Margaret “Sunshine” Vandivor of Houston, Ruth Donley of Humble and Dorothy Starnes of Dickinson; two brothers, Oyer Robert Hagaman Jr. of Bay City and Sam Hagaman of Bay City and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mary Elizabeth Hagaman

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Hagaman, 67, of West Columbia will be at 10 a. m. today, April 29 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Hagaman passed away April 27 at her residence. She was born Nov 30, 1930 in Bay City to E. H. McIntosh, Sr. and Trixie Isaac McIntosh. She was a member of the Catholic Church, a member of the VFW Post No. 8551, and an avid Bingo player.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda Sue and Ronald Whitt of West Columbia; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Agnes Hagaman of Brazoria, and Billy Wooderson of West Columbia; two sisters, Helen Smith of Blessing, and Martha McKissick of El Maton; two brothers, Ernest H. McIntosh, Jr. of Silsbee, and Stephen McIntosh of Damon; five grandchildren, Anna M. Barr and husband, Jay, Wendy Nallie and husband, Brian, Laura Hagaman, Jay Adcock, and Roddy Adcock and wife, Melissa; and two great grandchildren, Michael Anthony Nallie and Jacob Darringer Adcock.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and her husband, Lawrence Hagaman.

Pallbearers are Jay Barr, Roddy Adcock, Chuck Smith, Tracy Smith, Tim McIntosh and James Thaden. Honorary pallbearers are Billy Wooderson, John Thaden, Larry Pena, J. J. McIntosh, Matthew McIntosh, and Jay Adcock.

Memorials may be made to Cancer Research.

Bodies of Drowning Victims Recovered
Bay Cityans Lose Lives While Boating In Carancahua Bay

The bodies of the drowning victims whose tragic deaths ended a pleasure trip to the summer home of the Ellis Hamills at Carancahua Bay were recovered last night and early this morning by the boat that catapulted the pleasure seekers into the choppy waters. The bodies of Ellis Hamill and Mrs. H. P. McGuirt were recovered at 7:30 last evening, seven hours after the tragic accident. The body of Mrs. Jack Erwin was recovered this morning at 4.

The accident happened at 12:30 yesterday noon when Ellis Hamill, Mesdames McGuirt, Jack Erwin, Arthur Collins, Eddie Willenberg, Micky Hart were pleasure riding in a Dodge boat, "We Step." The boat is fast and can be turned short at a fast speed. The bay was high and exceedingly rough and the supposition is that in taking a quick turn, the boat banked against a wave catapulting those in the front seat into the water. The boat did not capsize. Those occupying the front seat were Ellis Hamill, Mrs. McGuirt, Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Erwin. Mrs. Mickey Hart was sitting on top of the boat between the front seat and the rear seat. Mrs. Willenberg was occupying the rear seat alone.

The boat, in taking its sharp turn, lost its speed and evidently the gears were shifted to cause the boat to idle and some say that the engine was dead. The reports are not clear. Mrs. Micky Hart, sensing the danger immediately handed a rope to Mrs. Willenberg and told her to hold the rope and she, Mrs. Hart, leaped into the water and swam to Mrs. Arthur Collins Jr., and handed her the rope and Mrs. Willenberg pulled the two to the boat. They then attempted to reach Mrs. Jack Erwin, who was still afloat, but failed to get to her in time to save her.

Several others in the party were on the banks and were witnesses to the horrible accident, but were helpless to render aid as the boat was about 250 yards out in the bay.

From the time of the accident, boats began to search for the bodies. An airplane was used in the attempt to locate the bodies. Many waded near the scene of the drownings as the water was not much deeper than six feet. Seines were used in an attempt to find the bodies, but it was not until a long rope was brought into use and several large hooks were suspended at various points along the rope that the bodies were found. The bodies of Ellis Hamill and Mrs.. McGuirt were found at the same time just a few feet from where they had drowned. Their bodies were found at 7:30. It was not until 4 o'clock this morning that the body of Mrs. Erwin was located. It was also within a short distance from where it went down. The same boat on which they were riding when the accident happened was the boat used to locate them. The boat carried one end of the long rope and the other end was attached to a life belt. - The body of Mrs. McGuirt was prepared for burial and taken to Clayton, Texas, where burial will be held at 10 o'clock Sunday morning.

The funeral of Ellis Hamill will be held in Bay City, from the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Sunday. Mrs. Jack Erwin's funeral will be held from the Methodist Church at 5 o'clock Sunday and burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Taylor Brothers are in charge of the three funerals.

Drowning Victims Funerals Will Be Held Tomorrow

The funeral for Mr. Ellis Hamill, 39,  oil operator of this city and Mrs. Jack Erwin, 25, wife of Mr. Jack Erwin, assistant cashier of the Bay City Bank and Trust Company, drowning victims of yesterday in the Carancahua Bay, will be held tomorrow and burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

The funeral of Mr. Hamill will be at 3 o'clock Sunday from the Baptist Church with Taylor Bros. in charge. The funeral for Mrs. Jack Erwin will be from the Methodist Church Sunday at 5 p.m. with Taylor Bros. in charge.

Mr. Hamill is survived by his wife of this city, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hamill of Houston; two brothers, P. R. Hamill of Bay City and Claud of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Merlin Vogelsang of Houston and Mrs.. E. G. Semple of London, England.

Mrs. Erwin is survived by her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Cartwright, and three sisters, Mrs. C. S. Jones of this city; Mrs. Pierre Gordon, Dallas, and Margaret Jo Cartwright.

Ellis Hamill

Sunday, June 23, 1935, friends, associates, companions and relatives were called upon to join in administering for a loved one that saddest of all duties, the eternal farewell, this time for Ellis Hamill, who, only a few short hours before was full of life, happy, carefree, and buoyant in the enjoyment of life.

A victim of the tragedy which took two other lives, Friday, June 21, this splendid man and citizen departed from amongst us while indulging in one of the many sports he loved so well, that of boating. He was laid to rest in beautiful Cedarvale by the tender and loving hands of those with whom he had spent a brief though useful life following religious services by the Rev. Odis Rainer, of the Baptist Church.

Ellis Hamill was reared in Bay City and followed almost entirely the oil business associated with his father, C. G. Hamill and his brother Claude Hamill. Of late years he had operated independently and made a flattering success of the business, becoming the owner of several wells in the Clemville field in this county and in Duval County.

Mr. Hamill was a true example of the real sportsman, and he followed every pastime with zeal and enthusiasm. His fancy turned to the traps and fine bird dogs more than to other things and because of it he traveled broadly and made hundreds of friends throughout the states and in Canada.

He was a genial and indulgent host and was never satisfied unless he could have his circle of friends with him, his chief desire being to have others enjoy life with him and to learn to love it as he loved it.

In all these pleasures he was joined by his wife and constant companion who had fought by his side through reverses as well as success in their years of struggle and work for a competence which meant for them the full enjoyment of a wholesome, buoyant life.

And in the midst of a life he had designed to please his friends as well as himself, it was all sunddenly ended.

Thus we write the last chapter in the life of a friend and fellow citizen, a man of worth, usefulness and character, a man who had no enemies and who glorified in calling every man "friend."

There has perhaps never been a more generally attended funeral than the one held for Mr. Hamill Sunday afternoon. There was not only an outpouring of his own home people, but friends came from all points to pay their last sad respects to a former companion, associate and friend.

The floral offerings were many and beautiful and came, many of them, from distant points.

Mr. Hamill is survived by his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hamill of Houston, two brothers, P. R. of Bay City, and Claud of Houston, and two sisters, Mrs. Merlin Vogelsang of Houston, and Mrs. S. G. Semple of London, England. The funeral was under the direction of Taylor Brothers, with religious services at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Odis Rainer.

The active pallbearers were W. C. Sanders, George Hathaway, Mickey Hart, Austin Castleton, Eddie Ryan and R. Q. Pegram
