Audrey Hobbs LaBeff, born March 6, 1926, in Clemville, [Matagorda County], Texas, departed this life to be with her Lord May 1, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Carlton LaBeff, son Baby Boy LaBeff, parents and step-parents Alfred Hobbs, Verlie and Bill Steinmeyer, Molly Sparks, and sister Ann Hale.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law D'Ann and Frank Hurta, daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Cliff Thomas, daughter and son-in-law Joane and Robert Zemanek, son and daughter-in-law Carlton and Teri LaBeff; grandchildren Jared Hurta and wife Kaylynn, Rachel Ann Hurta, Ashlie Thomas, Whitney Thomas, Mary Elizabeth Thomas, Chris Zemanek and wife Heather, Becky Watts and husband Shane, William Zemanek, DC3 James LaBeff USN and wife Stacy, Matthew LaBeff, Audrey LaBeff, Luke LaBeff; great-grandchildren Jordan Hurta, Lauren Hurta, Emma Zemanek, Preslie Thomas; brothers Jim Steinmeyer, Gene Steinmeyer and wife Jan, brother-in-law Gordon Hale; many lifelong friends and her beloved "Dollie".

All her life, Audrey was guided by and sustained by her faith in her Lord. She truly lived her beliefs. Also shaped by a strong pioneer spirit, Audrey felt that a person should work hard, pull his own weight, and strive to do what is right.

Audrey believed there was no higher calling in life than to be a wife and mother, and her greatest joy was having her family all together. Her legacy to her family is a lifetime of love, which has created a lasting bond of love, concern, and continuity among the generations.

Pallbearers will be Audrey's grandsons: Jared Hurta, Shane Watts, Chris Zemanek, William Zemanek, James LaBeff, Matthew LaBeff, and Luke LaBeff.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 2 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas.

The service will be held Monday, May 3 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Markham, Texas.

Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, Texas.

Henry Carlton LaBeff

December 9, 1920 – October 21, 1995

 

Carlton LaBeff, 74, of Markham, passed away Saturday, October 21, 1995 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born December 9, 1920 in Big Spring, Texas to Tom Dewitt and Robbie Bethema Stripling LaBeff.

 

He was a resident of Matagorda County since 1940, a member of the First Baptist Church in Markham, and a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force during WW II. He worked for Hamill & Hamill for twelve years before gaining employment with Texaco. He obtained the position of Production Foreman with Texaco and retired in 1986, after twenty-seven years of service.

 

He is survived by: his wife, Audrey Hobbs LaBeff of Markham; three daughters and sons-in-law, D’Ann and Frank Hurta of Inez, Cathy and Cliff Thomas of Victoria, and Joane and Bob Zemanek of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Teri Sullivan LaBeff of Inez; by twelve grandchildren, Rachel Hurta, Jared Hurta and his wife, Kaylynn, Ashlie Thomas, Whitney Thomas, Beth Thomas, Becky Zemanek, Chris Zemanek, Billy Bob Zemanek, James LaBeff, Matthew LaBeff, Audrey LaBeff, and Luke LaBeff, and by one great-grandchild, Jordan Hurta.

 

He was preceded in death by an infant son and by one sister, Ima Oliver.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 24, 1995 at the First Baptist Church in Markham, with Rev. Joe Ramsey and Rev. Howard Harper officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Funeral services for Thomas Elmer Lapp, 64, of Bay City, are scheduled for 10:00 AM October 11, 1983, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will be in the Cedarvale Cemetery.

 

Mr. Lapp was born February 9, 1919, in Canada. He died October 9 at Matagorda General Hospital.

 

Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Violet Ruth Lapp of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, George and Shirley Lapp of Wadsworth; brother, Edward Lapp of Vancouver, British Columbia; sister, Mrs. Maida Wilson of Nannimo, British Columbia; two grandchildren, Angel and Michael Gandy of Wadsworth.

 

Mr. Lapp was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

 

Pallbearers are Van Crocker, Felipe Soto, W. C. Mariner, Mike Wade, J. C. Cash, Joe Ducros and Bill Walker.

 

Services will be under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Albert Paul “Blackie” LeCompte

May 8, 1911 – July 1, 1988

 

Rosary services for Albert Paul “Blackie” LeCompte, 77, of Bay City, will be held at 1:00 PM Monday with Mass to follow immediately afterward at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City, with Monsignor James Brunner officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

 

Mr. LeCompte was born May 8, 1911, in Collegeport and died July 1, 1988, at his residence. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a veteran of World War II.

 

Survivors include his sister Ida Cox of Houston; two brothers, William J. LeCompte of Danbury and George W. LeCompte of Brazoria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers will be Dave Crawford, Dennis Cox, Ricky Lee Cox, Dr. Frank Peltier, William C. LeCompte, David LeCompte, Jr., George Wayne LeCompte and Harrel Knape.

 

Services are under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Sam Victor Le Tulle, 54, of Bay City, died June 9, in the Wharton-Gulf Medical Center. Survivors include: mother, Mrs. Clara M. Le Tulle of Bay City and sister, Mrs. William F. Green, also of Bay City.

 

Funeral service will be June 11, at 4:00 PM, in the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Milton McWilliams officiating. Interment services will be at the Cedarvale Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jerry B. Lipinski, Sr., 68, of Bay City, will be held 10:00 AM Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. James Brunner officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City. A rosary service will be held 7:00 PM today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.

 

Mr. Lipinski was born April 22, 1921, in Westhoff, Texas, to Stanley and Gertrude Lipinski and died 9:34 PM April 25, 1989.

 

A resident of Matagorda County since 1929, he retired in 1973 from the U. S. Postal Service as a mail carrier with 30 years service. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include: a son, Jerry Lipinski, Jr. of Van Vleck; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Paul Turlock of Houston; four sisters, Ruth Scott of Brownsville, Annie Davis of Madisonville, Texas, Pauline Falks of Houston and Eileen Murff of Normangee, Texas; two brothers, Paul Lipinski of Houston and Raymond Lipinski of Waller; two grandchildren, Michelle and Thomas Isler of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers include Thomas Isler, Stanley Polensky, Frankie Hahn, Julius Ledwig, Howard Scott and Charley Davis. Honorary pallbearers include James Black, Jerry Genzer and postal employees.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Lipinski, on April 7, 1982.

Richard Anderson “Dick” Mallard

January 24, 1913 – March 31, 1982

 

Funeral services will be held for Richard Anderson “Dick” Mallard, 69, of Bay City, 3:00 PM Thursday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel.

 

The Rev. Leroy Stanton will officiate at the services.

 

Mallard died March 31 at Matagorda General Hospital.

 

Mallard was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

 

Survivors include: his wife Ruth; daughter, Sally Mallard Rogers of Pittsburg, Texas; son, Jay A. Mallard of Angleton; two sisters, Dulce Christian of Odessa and Lurline Bowman of Bay City; brother, Harry T. Mallard of Van Vleck; and, two grandchildren, Christina Mallard and Richard Anderson Mallard II.

 

Burial will follow services at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Ruth Mallard Lowrey
(September 17, 1919 - April 30, 2012)

Ruth Mallard Lowrey, 92, passed away April 30th at Matagorda Regional Medical Center. She was born September 17th 1919, in Coushatta, Louisiana to the late Grady B. and Sallie G. Powell. She moved to Bay City at age 16 after completing high school and attending Business School in Shreveport.

She was employed by Sears in Bay City for many years. After retirement she was an active volunteer at the library and hospital auxiliary as well as the garden club and bird club. She was a member of the choir at the First United Methodist Church for 61 years.

She lived for the past few years in assisted living at The Legacy in Bay City, and remained active and wrote the song “Church in the Hallway” for the Methodist Service held at The Legacy on Wednesday. The hymnal was called “The Legacy Hymnal-The Lowrey Edition.”

She married Richard “Dick” Anderson Mallard in 1940 in Bay City, and they were married until his death in 1982. She married Bill Lowrey in 1988 and was married until his death in 2004.

She is survived by her son, Jay Anderson Mallard and his wife Janet of Angleton; a daughter, Sally Mallard Rogers of Pittsburg, TX; 2 grandchildren, Cristina Mallard-Bru and her husband Jose of Mason, Ohio, and Richard Anderson Mallard II and his wife Jessica of Austin; and she had four great grandchildren, Roman Alexander Bru, Christopher Jay Bru, Iliana Avonelle Mallard, and Olivia Lynn Mallard.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Bay City with Chaplain Don Storey and Rev. Pauline Harvey Storey officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Pallbearers will be: Richard Anderson Mallard II, Albert “Buzz” Riis-Due, K. Franks, Mike Lowrey, and G. P. Hardy III. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Richard Starnes, Bill Lowrey, Art Lowrey, Harry Mallard, Richard Mallard, Jeff Mallard, and Neal Mallard.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Bay City Public Library.

Ludvik Martin Manna
February 22, 1918 – July 19, 2013

Ludvik Martin Manna, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 95 on July 19, 2013.

He was born February 22, 1918 in Sealy, Texas to the late Martin Manna and Anna Liska Manna. He was the youngest of seven children.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Myrtle; and brothers and sisters, Joe Manna, Frank, Manna, Arnold Manna, Annie Vancik, Hilda Schulke and Emily Olbrych.

Ludvik met and married the love of his life, Myrtle Mary Burke in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humble, Texas on August 1, 1941. They settled in Bay City, Texas on Bucks Bayou Road in a house he built for them on his days off. Ludvik and Myrtle spent the next 68+ years raising their family and enjoying their life together. After his retirement from DOW Chemical in 1980, Ludvik and Myrtle loved to travel, tend their garden, play dominoes and enjoy Polka Music. They were member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Ludvik is survived by his son, Richard Manna and wife Kay of Helotes, Texas; daughter Sydonia Winters of Bay City, Texas; granddaughters Stacy Winters of Sealy, Texas and Constance Cunningham of Bay City, Texas; great-granddaughter, Brittainy Helton of Bay City, Texas; and great-grandsons Brandon and Brian Gavranovic of Bay City, Texas.

A rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2013 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Funeral mass was held at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Greg Korenek officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Myrtle Mary Burke Manna

BAY CITY - Myrtle Mary Burke Manna, 89, of Bay City passed away March 24, 2010. She was born July 31, 1920 in Baytown to the late Advia John and Rita Evans Burke. She grew up in Humble where she graduated from high school and was very active in sports.

She worked as one of the first female welders at the Houston Ship Channel. It was love at first sight when she met Ludvik Manna from Sealy. Myrtle and Ludvik were married Aug. 1, 1941 in Humble at St. Mary's Catholic Church. They spent most of their lives together in Bay City and were members of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Her sisters, Elva DeSonier and Billie Renfro, and brothers, A. J. Burke Jr., Jack Burke and Gerald Burke all preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Ludvik Manna of Bay City; daughter, Sydonia Winters of Bay City; son, Richard Manna and wife Kay of Helotes; sister, Dorothy Slaughter of Humble; granddaughters, Stacy Winters of Sealy and Constance Winters Cunningham of Bay City; great-granddaughter, Brittainy Helton of Bay City; great-grandsons, Brandon and Brian Gavranovic of Bay City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010 at Bay City Funeral Home. Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Derek Einkauf, Dennis Einkauf, David Gingles, George Manna, Kenny Kacal, and Dwayne Dibbern.

Mr. Menking was born November 2, 1915, to Louis and Minna Maeburger Menking in Fayette County, Texas, and died November 28, 1991, in Bay City.

 

Survivors include: three sisters, Ornell Reed of Edna, Nola Reed of Markham, and Wilma Fitzgerald of Ingram; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was affiliated with the Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Jimmy Dean Messer, 59, of Bay City, are scheduled for 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 20, 1994, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Herzog officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

 

Mr. Messer was born October 3, 1934, in Bartlett and died September 15, 1994, in Methodist Hospital in Houston.

 

A resident of Bay City for 40 years, he was employed by Evans Oil Company.

 

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Lancaster Messer of Bay City; a son, Bobby Dean Messer of Waco; one stepdaughter, Kim Beard of Bay City; two stepsons, Terry Elliott of Bay City and Jerry Elliott of Blytheville, Arkansas; and, a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Messer of Waco.

 

Pallbearers are Ronnie McElhenney, Roy McGee, John Martinez, Ricky Carter, Jim Mullino and Michael Beard.

 

Jake Bledsoe will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Anna Lee Haring Walters
(November 5, 1926 - December 9, 2006)

Anna Lee Haring Walters, 80 of Bay City, passed away Saturday December 9, 2006 in Houston, TX. She was born November 5, 1926 in Bay City to Hubert A. and Martha Moll Verser. She was a lifelong resident of Bay City, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City and a charter member of the Junior Service League.

She retired as an elementary and special education teacher and was dearly loved by her former students. She loved the Christmas season and will always be remembered for her beautiful Christmas Trees.

She is survived by her husband: F.S. “Steve” Walters of Bay City; her son: Charles Lee Haring of Bellaire; her step-children and their spouses Steve & Lou Walters of Littleton, CO, Virginia & Bruce Fickman of Pittsburg, PA, and John & Eugenie Walters of Austin; her sisters: Martha Louise Breeden of Lake Jackson and Mary Nell Quartararo of Canyon Lake; by her daughter-in-law: Robin Haring of Bay City; her nieces and nephew: Faith Michaels, Larry Shaffer and Susan Breeden; and by nine grandchildren Zachary Ryan Haring and Robert Charles Haring both of Bay City, Emily Caroline Walters, Scott Michael Walters, & Melissa Beth Walters all of Littleton, CO, Jason Phillip Fickman, Erin Rachel Fickman, & Mark Andrew Fickman all of Pittsburg, PA & Sarah Doumax of Austin. She was preceded in death by her first husband: Charles Henry Haring; her son: Robert Arthur “Bob” Haring; and by her parents: Hubert & Martha Verser.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City with Rev. John-Nelson Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Honorary pallbearers include Richard Smith, Jack Huebner, Roy Anderson, Dub Cox and Bobby Breeden.
