Funeral services for Ottie A. Baker, 89, of Bay City were held 3 p. m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church where the Rev. Chester Sassman officiated. Burial followed in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mr. Baker was born Feb. 12, 1901, in Marquez, Texas, and died Feb. 14, 1990, at St. Joseph Hospital, Bryan.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include a daughter, Melba Hrncir of Bryan; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers include Danny Hrncir, Jerry A. Novakosky, Jerry Lipinski, Wayne Dicky, David Dicky and Allen Dicky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ona M. Baker, in 1975, and his daughter, Marie Baker Lipinski.

Services are under the direction of Dick R Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

BAY CITY - Bitsie Barrett, 89, of Bay City, died Saturday, June 8, 2002. She was born April 7, 1913, in Texas City, to the late John Essery and Vera Moore Clement. She was a
homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors: daughter, Kathleen Barrett of Austin; sisters, June Huffman of Houston and Helen Martin of Aransas Pass; and brother, Richard Clement of Sulphur Springs.

Preceded in death by: husband, Thurman A. Barrett; parents; sister, Florence Louise Morgan; and brother, John Clement.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, the Revs. Roy Biser and Pauline Harvey officiating.

Thurman Ailor Barrett

Funeral services for Thurman Ailor Barrett, 80, of Bay City will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with Dr. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mr. Barrett was born May 9, 1907, in Elizabeth W. Va., and died May 21, 1987, at his residence.

He was employed by Sun Oil Co. for 37 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for 20 years. He served in World War II as a chief petty officer in the U. S. Navy having made all four European invasions. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Bitsie Barrett of Bay City and a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Mark McKenzie of Round Rock.

Pallbearers include Curtis Goodman, James Sowell, Bill Ehlert, Hollie Briscoe, Gordon Hardegree and Wayne Michael.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Alzheimer Disease Association, 360 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 601, Chicago, Ill., 60601.

Funeral services for Ernest Atlas Beard, 73, of New Gulf, were held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, March 25, at Taylor Bros. Chapel in Bay City. Interment was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

A former resident of Palacios, he retired after over 35 years with Texas Gulf Sulphur. He died Thursday at the Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Billie Beard of New Gulf; five sisters, Ella Lee Jenkins, Anna May Mansker, Ola Marie Scarborough, Beula Fay Mangum and Ruby L. Oatman all of Houston.

Willie Mae Beard, 83, of Bay City passed away October 6, 1995 at Matagorda House in Bay City. She was born January 6, 1912 in Bay City to Hugo and Alice Fredrick Kuesel.

She is survived by one sister, Anna Reed of Wharton and by four nephews, William R. Reed of League City, John H. Allen of Deer Park, Joe W. Allen of San Rafael, California, and Robert M. Allen of Edmond, Oklahoma.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday, October 9, 1995 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Chapel with Vassar C. “Skip” Holman, III officiating. Burial followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

C. C. Bender Rites Tuesday

A Masonic graveside ceremony will mark the last rites for Clifford Christian Bender, 1401 5th St. who passed away Saturday at 9:24 p. m. at Matagorda General Hospital.

Seventy years old, he was a World War I veteran, and a resident of Bay City for the past 27 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Muskogee, Okla., and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason of Dallas.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. C. C. Bender, a daughter, Mrs. June Hall of Wichita, Kansas, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a. m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. A. T. Dyal will officiate. Interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. He will lie in state at church from 9 to 10 a. m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Bender was born Aug. 1, 1911, to Oscar and Nona Keller Barber in Bay City and died Nov. 9, 1991, at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

Rosary will be said tonight at 7 p. m. at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Matriarch Of Prominent County Family Dies At 89

Mrs. Anna Dunn Cobb, 89, died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ann Cobb Vaughan, after a lengthy illness. Born in Osage, Kansas, January 31, 1887, Mrs. Cobb came to Blessing in October of 1907 as a bride. She and her husband, Frank G. Cobb who predeceased her in death on November 29, 1968, were both well known, not only in Bay City, but throughout Matagorda County.

They moved to Bay City in 1925, where Mr. Cobb built one of the first Farm Implement companies established in this area. He also founded and operated the F. G. Cobb Farm and Ranch, located North of town in the Skelly area, and was instrumental for petroleum exploration in this area.

Mrs. Cobb was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a member of the church Altar Guild, and she was a Charter Member of the Matagorda County Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.

Mr. and Mrs. Cobb were outstanding in the cultural activities of Bay City and Matagorda County, were always active in their church, and have been included among the most outstanding of civic leaders.

William Victor Collins, Sr., 66, a life long resident of Bay City, died May 27 at his home. Mr. Collins has been a farmer and rancher in Matagorda County since 1934. Survivors include: his wife, Kitty Collins; two daughters, Corinne Heiligbrodt and Claire Wilkins of Houston; a son, Vic Collins of Bay City; five grandchildren, Heather Heiligbrodt, Nicole and Rob Wilkins, Christian and Victor Collins; a sister, Mrs. Melba Holman of Houston.

The funeral Mass will be May 29 at 4:00 PM, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Reverend Charles Sonnier officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery with Pallbearers being: Vos McCroskey, M. L. Hale, Frank Harrison, Jack Ryman, Arthur Collins, and Jay Cohen. The funeral arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Holy Cross Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

Kathryn Alice Cobb Collins, 96, died on October 30, 2009, in Bay City, Texas.

She was born January 3, 1913, in the family residence in Blessing, Texas, to Frank G. Cobb and Anna Dunn Cobb. “Kitty”, as she was known to her family and friends, attended the public school in Bay City, Our Lady of the Lake College, and The University of Texas. Following college she taught school in Blessing. In 1934 Kitty married her high school sweetheart, William Victor Collins, and they lived in Bay City for the remainder of their lives farming rice and raising cattle. Kitty and Victor had three children, Corinne, Claire, and Vic.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; son, Vic and siblings, Laverne Coale, Mary Jean Wright, Charles Cobb and Ann Vaughan.

She is survived by: her daughters, Corinne and husband Bill Heiligbrodt and Claire Wilkins. Kitty had six grandchildren, Heather Heiligbrodt Stark, Hagan Heiligbrodt and wife Blair, Nicole Wilkins Manning and husband John, Rob Wilkins, Christian Collins Aman and husband Dirk, Victor Collins and wife Christy, and seven great-grandchildren, Avery and Blayden Aman, Barkley and Claire Manning, Grace and Kaylee Collins and Will Stark.

Kitty was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and various study and civic organizations in Bay City. She loved her family, friends, Matagorda County, the State of Texas and The University of Texas.

A rosary was said at 5 p.m. on November 1, 2009 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 10 a.m. November 2, 2009 with interment at Bay City Cedarvale Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Nancy Ryman, Olivia Brown, and the staff of the Legacy Assisted Living for their tender love and care for Kitty Collins. Pallbearers for Mrs. Collins will be her three grandsons, Hagan, Rob, and Victor, Chris Coale, Matt Coale, Tim Vaughan and honorary pallbearer Thomas Jackson.

Memorials may be made in Kitty’s memory to the Holy Cross Catholic School or charity of choice.

Survivors include his widow, Melba T. of Bay City; son, Gerald A. “Lon” of the U. S. Navy, Sardinia; daughter, Nita D. Pyle, Houston; brother, Dr. Stuart I. Draper, Midland; sisters, Mrs. John Conn, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mrs. Calvin Johnson, San Antonio. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City and a member of the Wesley Class. He was also a member of the Bay City Little League, Lions Club, Cub Scout Master, member of Society of Professional Engineers, and retired manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority. Services will be held Wednesday, June 8 at 10 a. m. at the First United Methodist church with the Rev. James Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be L. A. Funeral services for Melba T. Draper, 74, of Bay City were set for 2 p. m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Leroy Stanton officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Mrs. Draper was born Sept. 2, 1910, in Pittsburg, Texas and died Jan. 27, 1985, in Houston.

She was active in Girl Scouting and served on the South Texas Girl Scout Council. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star 380 and was on the advisory council of Rainbow Girls Assembly 119. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include a son, Gerald A. Draper of Panama City, Fla.; a daughter, Nita Pyle of Houston; a sister, Vivian McGee of Covington, La.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Draper, in 1977.

Pallbearers include Norman Treude, Chester Gloeckner, Gordon Hardegree, L. A. Augsberger, Wayne Pyle and Gary Ford.

Funeral services were under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Eden died October 18, 1981 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

He is survived by wife, Mrs. Lucille Edens of Bay City; sister, Mrs. W. H. Massenburg of Waco; niece, Mrs. W. M. Penny of Bay City.

Eden was the former owner of the Southwest Title Company and a resident of Bay City since 1927.

Mike Hammond

Mike Hammond, beloved husband, father, friend and colleague, died on January 5, 2002 in route to his Dallas home.

Former resident of Columbia Lakes, Mike was born to Cyril and Gwen Hammond on October 8, 1943.

An avid athlete, Mike excelled in both soccer and cricket and played until just a few years ago.

Mike has one brother, Tony Hammond and a sister, Lynn Robinson. Both reside in England. Mike was preceded in death of his mother.

Mike's career in process instrumentation spanned 30 years. He was a well-respected leader, engineer, and executive.

He belonged to the Instrumentation Society of America and Institute of Clean Air Companies. This institute recognized him in 2001 for leadership in Instrument Measurementation by developing industry-wide technical standards for emission monitoring systems.

Mike was married to Jane Ryman Brandon on January 20, 1996.

Their extended family includes three daughters, Julia Hammond of England, Jackie Hammond Bingley and husband Mark of England and Claire Brandon Chesser and husband Blaine of Angleton, Texas.

Grandchildren include six granddaughters, Roseanna and Clara Sinclair, Lucy Sweeny, Alice and Emily Bingley, and Peyton Chesser. Cade Chesser is the one grandson. All were enthralled with their granddad.

Friends, family and colleagues will dearly miss Mike's zest for life and his sense of humor. His fairness and kindness to all were unequaled.

Among his professional peers, he was deeply respected for his talent, industry knowledge, and leadership. He empowered all he met to achieve limitless growth.

There will be Rosary recited for Mike on January 10 at Taylor Bros. Chapel in Bay City at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. John the Apostle Church in West Columbia on Friday, January 11 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Lee Flores officiating.

Mike considered this church to be his spiritual home.

Burial at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City will follow Mass.

Taylor Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Mike will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched, but especially by his wife and best friend, Jane. His passing will leave a void that will not be filled except by memories of this remarkable life. A00011A2002JA09

Funeral services for Florine Vanderslice Hays, 82, of Bay City, were scheduled for 2:00 PM today at First Baptist Church with Dr. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial was scheduled to follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Hays was born January 12, 1908, to Benjamin and Mary Vanderslice Curtice, in Como, Texas, and died August 25, 1990, at Bay Villa Nursing Home. For many years she worked at Rosenzweigs Department Store in Bay City. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church.

 

She is survived by: her daughter, Jennie Bob Bergstrom of Bay City; three grandchildren, Norma Forey, Jennie Frances Treece, and Barbara Jo Dry; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Goulding H. Hays on May 30, 1974, and her son, Goulding C. Hays on February 9, 1968.

 

Pallbearers include Clark Bergstrom, Leonard Forey, Steven Treece, James Dry, Dr. Sul Ross Harrington and Randy Treece.

 

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of Bay City Funeral Home.

Ludolph Robert Heiligrodt, 69, a resident of Bay City for 45 years, died April 1 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was the owner of Heiligbrodt Ins. Agency and was a member of Bay City and Austin Lodges A. F. & A. M.; Arabia Temple Shrine; Sheriff’s Assn. of Texas; Rotary International; and American Legion. Survivors include: wife, Gladys Broughton Heiligbrodt of Bay City; son, L. William Heiligbrodt of Houston; and granddaughters, Heather Hill Heiligbrodt of Houston. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. April 3 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Milton McWilliams officiating. Interment was at the Cedarvale Cemetery with pallbearers being: Joe Entzminger, J. D. Voyles, Bert Steves, Roy Shoultz, Roswell Burke and Jerry Voyles. Bay City Loses Active Leader

Funeral services for Ludolph Robert Heiligbrodt, age 69, were held today at 2 p. m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Milton McWilliams officiating. Interment was at Cedarvale Cemetery. Heiligbrodt died Saturday night, in St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

He was one of Bay City’s individual business men being the sole owner of Ludolph Heiligbrodt insurance agency for more than forty years. Born in Lufkin he and his parents moved to Austin where he was educated in the Austin public school system and attended the University of Texas.

After coming to Bay City in 1934, he became involved in numerous community activities.

He served on the executive board of the Chamber of Commerce, membership chairman and a member of the board of directors for Bay City Country Club, he served on the Rules Committee and was a member of the Men’s Golf Association. He was a member of the Arabia Temple and served as president of the Shrine Club.

He also was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Rotary, Masonic Lodge No. 12 of Austin, the Masonic Lodge of Bay City, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the American Legion, Sheriff’s Association of Texas, and the Longhorn Club. He served his country in World War II, from 1943-1946 as a quartermaster in the U. S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Broughton Heiligbrodt of Bay City; one son, L. William Heiligbrodt of Houston; one granddaughter, Heather Hill Heiligbrodt, and one daughter-in-law, Corinne Collins Heiligbrodt of Houston.

The family request that memorials be made to the Heart Association.

Gladys B. Heiligbrodt

Gladys B. Heiligbrodt, 90, of Bay City died June 27, 2002 at Matagorda General Hospital. She was born November 23, 1911 in Bay City to the late William Hamilton and Tempie Andrews Broughton. She had six adoring brothers, Earl, Ira, Maurice, Fred, Buddy and Seldon, who had preceded her in death. Gladys lived a wonderful life, surrounded by a loving family and many friends.

Gladys graduated from Bay City High School in 1929, and enjoyed the social, educational, and religious functions in Matagorda and surrounding counties. In 1936 she married Ludolph Heiligbrodt, who had moved to Bay City from Austin to run the J.C. Penney Company store. Mr. Heiligbrodt later started Ludolph Heiligbrodt Insurance Company, which Mrs. Heiligbrodt ran while her husband was in the service during World War II. In 1941, Gladys and Ludolph had a son, Ludolph William, known to his friends as "Billy". Mrs. Heiligbrodt was active in the Bay City Country Club Lady's Golf Association, PTA, Book Review Club, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She also did charity work at the Matagorda General Hospital with the Pink Ladies. Gladys enjoyed attending the University of Texas football games and traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, South America, and Alaska.

Gladys was a sweet loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed, but remembered always with affection.

Gladys is survived by: her son, Billy and his wife Corinne of Houston; granddaughter: Heather and her husband Richard Stark of Palm Beach, FL; grandson: Hagan Hamilton Heiligbrodt, a senior at Baylor University; sister-in-law: Rena Broughton of Bay City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Reverends Bruce Bonner and Harley Savage officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery next to her husband.

Pallbearers were Hagan Heiligbrodt, Richard Stark, Frank and Paul Sliva, Rob Wilkins, and Dr. Jack Allen. Honorary pallbearer was Glen White. The family wishes to express their special gratitude to Glady's care givers, Mary Aguilar and Viola Thompson, who enabled her to pass the last four years with dignity and fun.

Sybil Hope Jensen

Funeral services for Sybil Hope Jensen, 76, of Bay City will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Jensen was born Feb. 17 1909, in Nacogdoches to Lee Roy and Beulah Briggs Reagan and died Dec. 31, 1985, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

A resident of Bay City for 49 years, she was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include numerous friends.

Pallbearers include Mike Pruitt, Bill Ehlert, Gordon Hardegree, Wayne Michael, T. J. Middleton and James Sowell.

Honorary pallbearers include Joe Ducrose and Don Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hans Fred Jensen on Jan. 29, 1980, her parents and two brothers.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Tillie Marie Cerny Kalinec

Tillie Marie Cerny Kalinec, 81, of Bay City, slipped quietly away from this earth on March 6, 2005, to join her husband Henry in heaven.

She was born December 13, 1923, in El Campo, Texas to the late Frank and Louise Pavlicek Cerny.

She grew up in El Campo and attended Pica School.

In 1940 she married Henry Kalinec and subsequently had five children, who will greatly miss her gentle and accepting nature.

Mrs. Kalinec was a resident of Bay City since 1955 and a life-long member of the Catholic Church.

She was loved not only as a sweet, caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend, but also as a peaceful person who found fulfillment in the beauty of her yard and garden.

Her many pleasures included gardening, sharing vegetables from her garden and cooking — especially kolaches, noodles, dressing and canned pickles.

In her youth, she truly enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie Dalton of Houston, and Ann and Don Johnson of Bay City; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Steve Ann Kalinec of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jay Kalinec of Wadsworth, Texas, and Henry and Sue Kalinec, Jr. of Van Vleck, Texas; sisters, Martha Macek of Edna, Lillie Williams of El Campo, Evelyn Burrow of Bay City, Rosemary Boatwright of West Columbia, and Millie Williams of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Mark Kalinec, who attends graduate school in Austin, and Kelly Johnson who attends school in Van Vleck.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home

Funeral mass will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating.

Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lawrence and Jay Kalinec, Don Johnson, Ronald Burrow, Sylvester Cerny and Clifford Williams.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Dalton Sargent Mangum


Dalton Sargent Mangum Sr.

February 12, 1923 – May 15, 1984

 

Services for Mr. Dalton Sargent Mangum, Sr., of Bay City, will be held at 2:00 PM May 17, 1984, in the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Martin Moore officiating.

 

Mr. Mangum, 61, was born February 12, 1923, in Bay City. He was a lifelong resident of Bay City. He served in the Navy during World War II, and was a member of the Pentecostal Church. He died May 15, 1984, in Matagorda General Hospital.

 

He is survived by: his father and step-mother, Harvey and Anna Mangum of Bay City; four daughters, Betty Lou Roberson of Victoria, Andrea J. Thompson of Kenner, Louisiana, Cathy Sargent Mangum of Cedar Lane, and Oma Jean Stevens of Cedar Lane; two sons, Dalton S. Mangum Jr. of Palacios and Larry Wayne Mangum of Oregon; one sister, Doris Wallace of Bay City; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Pallbearers will be Cory Roberson, Shane Wallace, Wesley Wallace, Harvey Wallace Jr., Brent Ellis, Danny Mangum, Tracy Ruddick and Arville Dean Wallace.

 

Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
