W. G. “Shorty” Vandiver

A memorial service for W. G. “Shorty” Vandiver, 93, was held Feb. 29, 1992, at Spring Woods Baptist Church in Houston.

He was born Aug. 18, 1898, in Gatesville, and died Feb. 26, 1992, at Memorial City Hospital in Houston following a brief illness.

He married Vadis Jeter Dec. 26, 1936.

Survivors include his wife, Vadis; daughter and son-in-law, Noralee and Leslie Bonham; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Becky and Randy Landrum; grandson, Black Bonham; three great-grandchildren, Chantelle, Josh and Caye-Caye Landrum; one sister, Nora Zeweckies of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews.

He donated his body to the Baylor College of Medicine.

Funeral services for Mrs. Almeda Welsby, 93, of 141 Kaine St., will be at 2 p. m. Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City with burial in Cederville [Cedarvale] Cemetery, in Bay City.

Mrs. Welsby, who died Friday, is survived by a son, Glenn D. Welsby of San Antonio.

Betty Lou Wise

Betty Lou Wise, 76, of San Benito, Texas died April 14, 2004 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, Texas.

She was born October 30, 1928 in Houston, Texas to the late Wilbur White and Mary Lou Tyson Hubert.

She was a resident of the Valley area since 1990 and a former resident of Wharton.

Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Mollie King Huffman of San Benito, and Linda Lou and Dan Kirisits of Kuwait; four grandchildren, Rachel and Ethan Knell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Rebecca and Jennifer Kirisits of New York; one great-grandchild, Morgyn Knell of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Graveside funeral service was held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Cedarvale Cemetery [Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas] with the Rev. Chester assman officiating.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Young, 93, of Bay City passed away October 16, 2013. She was born October 31, 1919 in Hungerford, TX to the late William Bond Harris and Dora Lynn George Harris. She was a retired Librarian, a job she truly adored.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Wesley Young, Jr., son Jack Wesley Young III and brother Ray Harris. Survivors include son Clark Young & wife Cynthia of Bay City; sister Bonnie Lynn Harris Busch; grandchildren Marcy Craft & husband Frank, Jack Wesley Young IV & wife Kay, Barton Pierce Young & wife Lucy, Richard Young, Rachel Lemaire and Robert Whitley and great grandchildren Chad S. Craft & wife Sayrah, Courtney Elizabeth Craft, Kenzie Layne Young, Chloe Dawn Young, Breeana Pierce Young, Haley, Lane & Ty Lemaire and great-great granddaughter Mary Margaret Ann Craft.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5pm to 7pm Friday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, October 19, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mark Stoub officiating. Pallbearers will be Doug Huebner, Richard Knapik, Frank Craft, Chad Craft, Wes Young and Bart Young.

Funeral Services For Jack W. Young Sr., 63, Held Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Jack W. Young Sr., 63, were held Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ernest Deutsch and the Rev. Luke Bolin officiating and burial in Cedarvale Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral home.

Mr. Young was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 A. F. & A. M., Bay City Council No. 251 R. & S. M., Bay City Chapter R. A. M. Texas Consistory, Galveston, and Bay City Shrine Club.

Survivors are his widow, a son, Jack Young Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Clark of Clarksville, Mrs. J. T. Lokey and Miss Verna Young of Ida Bell, Okla.; two brothers, Gaines Young of Ida Bell, Okla., and Porter Young of Leesville, La.

Jack Young Dies: Leaves Legacy Of Service

Jack Wesley Young Jr., director of Public Works for the City of Bay City, died Tuesday at Matagorda General Hospital.

Young had served in that position for the city ten years.

Prior to this, he held positions as manager of Comet Mills and with Bay City Material Company.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served five years in the United States Air Force. Young also served his country during the Korean War.

He was born in Galveston on December 20, 1917 and moved to Bay City at the age of three when his parents settled in the area and established a grocery business. His mother, the late Bonnie Louise Young, was city tax assessor-collector for many years.

Being active in church and civic affairs, Young was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was currently serving as a ruling elder. He also served as treasurer and church school teacher.

He was a member of the Rotary Club, a Boy Scout leader and was manager of the Dodgers Little League team for 25 years.

Serving as a member of the board of directors of the Bay City Little League Association at the time of his death, his devotion to the youth of the Little League through the years prompted the association to name a ball park in his honor.

Young was a 32 Degree Mason and was active as a Co-Pilot of the Pilot Club in Bay City of which his wife is a member.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Harris Young; sons, Jack Wesley Young III and Clark Hopkins Young; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10 a. m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Frank Seaman and intern pastor Diana Black officiating.

Burial will follow services at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Charles Eppright, Tom Roland, Mayor Glen White, Hart Soli, Phillip Wilson and Virgil Fetter.

Honorary pallbearers include Robert Peden, John O’Neil, Odie Sweeny, Guy Townsend, Robert Renfro, W. W. Rugeley, Elmer Fanson, Mayor Emeritus Richard Gusman, all employees from the Department of Public Works City of Bay City and all members of the Dodgers Little League baseball team past and present.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be sent in the form of donations to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Officiating will be the Rev. Frank Seaman.

Young died July 27, 1982 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include wife, Evelyn Elizabeth Young of Bay City; sons, Jack Wesley Young III of Bay City; Clark Hopkins Young of Bay City; aunt and uncle, Clarence and Jeannette Steel Gresham of Houston; 4 grandchildren.

Burial will follow services at Cedarvale Cemetery.
