Annie Julia Pearce

Annie Julia Pearce
In Memoriam.

Mrs. Annie Julia Pearce, wife of Mr. E. E. Pearce, died Thursday morning in the Gulf Hospital after an illness of one week. Three physicians, Dr. Bomar of Gulf, Dr. Stokes of Houston and Dr. Everett of Cameron (a brother of Mrs. Pearce), tried throughout the week to overcome the disease but without success. Strengthening the hands of the doctors and nurses, the prayers of Mrs. Pearce’s friends did not cease day or night until she fell on sleep Thursday morning. While Mrs. Pearce suffered extremely, she never murmured or complained and she faced death with a beautiful calm and strong faith. Not a touch of fear troubled her and in close communion with God she prayerfully and hopefully awaited the coming of rest. As she had used her Christian religion through life as a support in the fulfillment of duties so in death she used it as a source of strength and assurance.

Mrs. Pearce was born in Summit, Miss., November 6, 1876. At the age of eight years she came with her parents, the Reverend Dr. T. J. and Mrs. Martha Everett to Lorena, Texas, where she grew to womanhood. She was a woman of education and culture and taught in the public schools of Texas for 12 years. From childhood, she was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. She was a Bible student all her life and at times attended special schools of instruction. She was also a member of the Columbia Rebecca Lodge No. 79, Bay City, Texas.

In Gulf, Mrs. Pearce has been most widely known as a mother, thoroughly devoted to her home and children. She was always ready to meet any call for community service and contributed largely to the establishment and building up of the Parent-Teacher Association. Her experience in the schoolroom made her a valued member of several committees of the association.

Mrs. Pearce leaves three children, John M. Stovall, Annie Laura and Hugh Edwin Pearce, and her husband, Mr. E. E. Pearce, in her immediate family. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mattie E. Carter, of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Lelia Martin, of Rosebud, Texas, and four brothers, Dr. C. E. Everett, of Cameron, Texas, Mr. M. E. Everett, of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. E. J. Everett, of Tyler, Texas, and L. B. Everett, of Sapulpa, Okla.

Her many friends in Gulf join in an expression of sympathy to the members of her family. They rejoice in the splendid Christian character portrayed in the life of Mrs. Pearce.

Funeral of Mrs. E. E. Pearce.

Mrs. E. E. Pearce was buried last Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Baptist Church in Bay City. Burial was in the Bay City Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Broome, assisted by the Rev. M. Joslin, pastor of the Bay City Baptist Church, officiated. A choir composed of Bay City and Gulf singers sang several beautiful hymns at the church as well as at the cemetery. Mrs. Vogelsang, of Bay City, sang with real depth of expression a solo at the request of Mrs. Pearce’s sister.

A large number of friends went from Gulf to attend the funeral and pay their respects to their neighbor. Gulf has had a remarkable record with a mortality rate seldom approached by any other community. Mrs. Pearce is the second adult death among the townspeople within the year.

The funeral was marked by the large number of floral offerings. Friends and fraternal organizations sent many beautiful flowers and floral designs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God, in His wisdom, hath recalled
The boone his love had given
And tho’ the body slumbers here
His soul is safe in heaven.
