Collegeport Day, a celebration looked forward to each year by residents, former residents and friends, was the highlight of this Bicentennial year for this community.

More than 270 people registered at the 68th anniversary celebration of the founding of Collegeport on
May 25, 1908.

The Bicentennial theme was carried out with the American and Bicentennial flags flying over the sign "Mopac House, Collegeport Day, May 29, 1976". At the registration table, covered with a red cloth, guests were given name tags decorated with red, white and blue ribbons with Collegeport 1908-1976 inscribed in red.

George Washington's portrait and the American flag were displayed in the dining hall. The serving tables had red, white and blue streamers down the center, also miniature flags.

One large table held the large Bicentennial cake with candles, displayed by the Matagorda County Federation, of which the Collegeport Club was a charter member.

Collegeport History

Mary Jane Miller, vice president, conducted the business for the day.

Eighteen members answered roll call with varied topics. It was our pleasure to have with us Mrs. D. Hamner of Waller, house guest of Mrs. Louise Waechter.

Mrs. Fannie Mae Stallard, Mrs. Hazel Merck arid Mrs. Rosalie Ellis, hostesses for the day's program, presented Mrs. Dorothy Franzen Merck, Collegeport pioneer, who brought us an interesting history of
Collegeport. Collegeport was founded in 1908 by the Burton D. Hurd Land Company and grew into a thriving town of 496 by 1912.

At the founding of the town land was granted for the building of a college of industrial domestic and agricultural arts and sciences. Waterways were opened and developed. Due to catastrophic disasters
through the years some of the town has been destroyed but the families living in the community are still carrying on and keeping those first plans of organization living and active with distinctive pride.

Mrs. Merck had many pictures of Collegeport on display that added interest to the history.

Refreshments of cakes, dips, chips, coffee and punch were served by the hostesses.

Thanks to the ladies of Collegeport who joined with us and welcomed us to make our visit so very interesting.
