Collegeport Day

May 28, 1977

Collegeport Day is May 28

Collegeport will celebrate its 69th anniversary Saturday, May 28.

This annual Collegeport Day celebration is sponsored by the Woman’s Club, which was organized on May 19, 1910.

Collegeport Day, held on the last Saturday of May, is a day residents and former residents and their families and friends get together at the Mopac House to enjoy a barbecue dinner at noon and spend the rest of the day renewing acquaintances and talking over old times.

300 Turn Out at Collegeport

More than 300 former residents, their families, local people and friends registered for the annual homecoming on the 69th anniversary of the founding of Collegeport on May 28. Mrs. Gerald Wells, Sr., Mrs. John Merck, Mrs. V. L. Bowers and Mrs. D. N. Tate placed name tags on all who registered.

Mason Holsworth gave the welcome and the Rev. Elroy Weikel, pastor of Collegeport Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation.

The menu of barbecued beef and many covered dishes was served from 2 long tables as the guests formed four lines.

Folks enjoy visiting before and after the dinner.

It was noticeable that very few of the original settlers of the 1908-1910 era were present. Among them were Mrs. H. I. White, the former Susie Hoffman, whose father had the local drug store; Leonard Humer, who was employed by the local telephone office; Dale Welsby, Mrs. Jessie Merck Kilpatrick, Mrs. Bessie Merck Wilson of Dallas and Mrs. Elve Merck Martin of Houston. It was good to see a number of the former high school pupils who attended school here in the 1930’s, including Winston McKissick, Blanche Adams Lonis, Noel and Lloyd Adams.

Special guests were the members of the Matagorda Historical Society who held their last meeting of the year in the Presbyterian Church before the dinner, where one of the ladies who had roots in Collegeport, Ruth Braden Matthes, was installed as president of the society by her grandson, Pat Matthes.

The Women’s Club which sponsors the annual homecoming appreciated the cooperation of all who helped to make the day one to be long remembered.

The meat for the dinner was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wells, Jr., and was barbecues by W. L. Ellis, Gus Franzen, and their helpers.

We were happy to see our host Gerald Wells able to greet his friends along with his wife, Mamie, and son, Gerald and daughter-in-law, Bettye.

We are looking forward to the 70th homecoming anniversary in 1978 when Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gayle of Markham will be our hosts.
