Memories Recalled at Collegeport Days
By Mrs. Dean Merck

More than 300 people assembled at the Mopac House Saturday, May 28 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Collegeport.

Among the old timers attending were the only living charter member of the Woman's Club, Mrs. W. W. Wilkinson, Sr. of Bay City; Leonard Heemer and wife of Houston; and Floyd Wainere, Dale Welsby and his wife Bea of San Antonio and Ira Corporon, who flew in from California to spend the day with his former neighbors and friends.

Dean Merck, master of ceremonies, gave a hearty welcome and thanked the Woman's Club members for the many years they have sponsored Collegeport Day. He praised the barbecue committee headed by Gus "Goose" Franzen for the best barbecue in Texas and Jean Ann Murry, chairman of the Social Committee and her co-workers.

The Rev. William "Bill" Hodge of Houston, Margaret Ann Holsworth's husband, gave the invocation.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious food served with the barbecue. My, there are a lot of good cooks who bring their favorite specialties. So many remarked that there are not many places these days where folk get together for such wonderful fellowship and food.

It was interesting to note the pictures and Collegeport Chronicle and New Era and the histories of Collegeport were viewed by many.

Among new additions in the library, a gift to The Woman's Club, are pictures and articles copied from the collection of Mrs. Grace Henley, Chappaqua, N. Y. (Mrs. Henley is the granddaughter of Theo Smith who built the three story stucco building with the red tile roof which can be seen across the bay from Palacios.)

From it we learned that the formal opening of Collegeport was held at the Collegeport Hotel and dancing at the pavilion May 25, 1909. She also included a number of pictures and articles about Grace Chapel, the Episcopal Church, which was located south of the Dean Merck property. This church was moved to Palacios in the 1920's.

There was so much enthusiasm and desire to continue holding the annual Collegeport Day celebrations that donations were made for the barbecue fund for 1984.

The preparation for Collegeport does something for the rural community that draws the folk closer together as they do plumbing, wiring, cleaning, putting up tables and placing the welcome sign on the Mopac lawn.
