Collegeport Day Saturday marks 82nd anniversary
It's reunion time for friends and families in Collegeport this Saturday as the Woman's Club sponsors the annual Collegeport Day celebration.
The event, traditionally held on the last Saturday of May, marks the 82nd anniversary of the founding of Collegeport [which] officially occurred on May 25, 1908.
Saturday's Collegeport Day activities will begin at noon at the Mopac House.
In the photograph above, homeseekers, brought down by the Burton D. Hurd Land Company, stand in front of the Collegeport Hotel in 1909. It was in the Collegeport Hotel, which accommodated 100 guests, where the grand opening of Collegeport was held on May 25, 1909. The hotel was located on Central Street facing Tres Palacios Bay and the Collegeport pavilion.
In the photograph below, the Morris Grocery and other buildings line one of the main streets in early day Collegeport. The pictures reprinted here, and the accompanying history of Collegeport article on Page 12 are provided by Dorothy Merck and reprinted from the volume Historic Matagorda County.

Each year at Collegeport Days the organizational committee honors some of the attendees for being the youngest, the oldest, the farthest away and things like that. Newlyweds Ronnie and Sally Guynes (far left) had been married most recently, while Frances and Francis Savage (center) had been married 59 years and 363 days (by the way, to avoid confusion, you can call Francis "Bill"). Patsy and Charles Clemens drove in all the way from Chico, California, a trip of about 2200 miles just so they could be in this picture (to our far right) and eat an excruciatingly delicious meal. Two-month-old William Hubert Boeker, IV, brought his mom, Terri, but the oldest attendee, Harry Smith, was not present for the photo. When faced with the choice of going home and taking a nap or waiting around in the hot sun for a newspaperman to take his picture, 92-year-old Smith chose the nap; this wise system of practical priorities has no doubt contributed to his longevity.
